In the episode where Thelma found out that James's father was alive and his ship being docked in Chicago, she invite him over for a surprise party for James. But James refuse to see him.
I really think that was selfish of James. I mean it must have been 35 years since his father abandoned the family, and that was long enough to forget and forgive.
And by not forgiving his father and claiming that he was dead all those years, James also deprived his children of having a grandfather. And having him around on Christmas and holidays for the kids.
Florida insisted that James see his father as she said that there might not be another time. And she was definitely right.
