The All in the Family alum was a fixture in "Save the Children" ads (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52XA8FIVRR8) for Christian Children's Fund and Save the Children Federation Inc. for nearly 30 years, resulting on her being parodied on In Living Color. In an interview with Marc Maron on his WTF podcast, Struthers said "a roving band of guerrilla warfare guys" in Uganda led her to change her mind about doing "Save the Children" ads.

In regard to being made fun of for the commercials- the same people who made fun of her and the commercials, are probably similar to those who hide behind the internet to spew their vile attitudes, hate and negativity.

I don't even see why this was fodder for comedians- why, because she happened to have some extra weight on her?

I read this the other day. OMG how scary. No wonder she stopped.
God bless her for not only doing commercials but walking the talk and going to see the sponsored kids. She just was not a spokes person. She was involved.
How scary though.

The gun incident, as well as those planes, sound incredibly scary. She did wonderful work, and spent 30 years doing it. I hope she's proud of her amazing accomplishments.

What's sad is that Miss Struthers also dissed Rita Moreno as 'just a mean, difficult human being' while they had appeared to be good chums while working together in the female version of 'The Odd Couple' and even did a 'Christian Children's Fund' plea together. I wonder why she now has a negative opinioin about Miss Moreno who seems to be someone most folks she's worked with and interacted with have liked a great deal.
