View Full Version : Taking a Shower vs a Bath ... ?
CosmicCharlie 04-11-2021, 09:42 AM In LITB seems bathing is the norm with the exception of Wally taking a shower at school.
Now a days showers are much more common.
Was that a generation thing ?
I always shower daily but hardly ever that a bath !

I never really thought about it before, but it could pertain to whether one grew up in a house having indoor plumbing, or not. If your main source of hot water was a kettle, then you likely didn't shower often?
Personally, I don't care for the notion of wallowing in my own filth, so I by far prefer showers. With occasional trips to the jacuzzi to clean out my pores.
Babalu 04-11-2021, 11:55 AM I don't really remember but I'm guessing that they (and TV shows in general) only refer to kids taking baths. I doubt that they ever mentioned June taking a bath, but it would be interesting to see if she took off her pearl necklace.
Torgo 04-11-2021, 12:00 PM Wally took a shower at home also, this was seen in at least one episode when Wally sticks his head out of the shower and Beaver tries to hypnotize him.
The episode with the Jeff the tramp, Jeff takes a bath in the master bathroom.
I guess it's generational. When I was a kid ( well....when I was a kid... :) ) I never really knew of anything other than baths. Sure there was that spouty thing coming out of the wall up high, but that was off limits. Up until I was 10-11 years old it was always a bath, and I hated it. It was so drawn out and protracted and I hated that feeling of sitting in a mix of soapy/dirty water becoming ever more tepid. Yuck. Not just on LITB, but it seems lots of us kids took baths only when we were forced to.
One day at about 10 or 11 y/o I was with my father and we just came inside from doing something and we were dirty and sweaty. He basically said, "You're old enough now. From now on, you take showers, and here's what you do..." and showed me how to adjust the water pressure and temp and left me to it. It felt refreshing and much less bothersome. I never looked back. In hindsight, I wonder if there was some unwritten parental rule of the 60s and early 70s ( and no doubt prior to that ) that "Little kids take baths, everybody else showers".
Somewhat similar to that was grade school's absolute prohibition of the use of ink pens ( ball points ). We had to write in pencil until 5th or 6th grade. In hindsight, it was kind of generational caste-system of sorts.

I have not had a shower in 20 years. I got used to baths and they save water.
I live in California and we get charged for water usage. They keep importing people though so I am not sure they just want my money or they want us to conserve.

I think Wally refers to taking a shower a few times in the 2nd house. Once I recall him saying he's going over to Mary Ellen's and Eddie asks why he is taking a shower (odd question).
The only time I remember a reference to him taking a bath (again 2nd house) is in the episode "Teacher Comes to Dinner." Beaver asked him to take one, and later Beaver introduced him to Miss Landers: "This is my brother, Wally. He's a sophomore in high school and he took a bath."
umfan87 04-11-2021, 09:15 PM well i would imagine both being active boys they probably needed to shower at least 2 times a day lol
stevea 04-11-2021, 10:37 PM Of course we had the episode "Beaver Takes a Bath." He ended up not, as far as we know, because he let the tub run over.
Like Cx above, Beaver hated them and all his baths were under verbal protest. He probably missed his bath the time Larry ran away and hid in the bathtub.
TheLittleFaerie 05-23-2021, 07:04 AM Showers may not have been as common in homes as they are today. I prefer a bath a night, shower in the morning
OH Nuts! 05-23-2021, 07:39 AM Bath all the way. But showers are good too-esp. if I’m in a rush.
vitoscotti 05-23-2021, 12:07 PM Didnt they have the boys bathroom without a toilet a lot? Now that's funny.

Well it was the 50s, so that's not uncommon for TV show... Same with Brady Bunch. I mean a toilet is only used for one thing, and they didn't want the viewers' minds going there lol
stevea 05-24-2021, 07:19 AM Regardless of how pleasant Charmin says it is, we don't need to dwell on it in a Sitcom. We never saw a toilet on the Brady Bunch, and the only reference to one was when Bobby and Peter were feuding, and Peter divided their room with tape on the floor. Bobby advised that the bathroom was on his side of the room, and flushed the toilet off camera.
In 1970 the TV world knew when Archie was in the bathroom, mostly by hearing a toilet flush. No harm in any of this, we just don't need vivid detail--as far as Charmin goes, just bring Mr. Whipple back and get rid of those silly bears and their itchy rears.

+1
I don't offend easily, but to me it seems those bears have crossed a line.
Unfortunately, I think that I encounter daily, people who don't even know that line exists.

Definitely one of my least favorite ...
the last image I want to see is the thought of not clean underwear ... stupid bears that had an issue with keeping their underwear clean ...

My whole life I've seen editorial references in movies calling people "peasants", or categorical references to the "unwashed masses",...and all along I just suspected they were talking about people who worked the soil for a living.
Now, I've come to suspect they were talking about what we are talking about here.
In total candor, I think I was in my 30's before I caught on to the subtle references in the Sea Breeze commercials claiming "Safe for sensitive Skin". Been a regular customer, ever since. :eek2:
stevea 05-24-2021, 01:53 PM I saw a commercial for a razor for, ahem, sensitive areas. But they are totally explicit. I'd heard about it on the Bob and Tom Show, but now I've seen it.
I don't think that commercial could be any more graphic, but who knows where Charmin will "go" next?
Bonniegirl 05-24-2021, 01:58 PM Showers !! I can't remember the last time I took a bath ! The only way I would now is if I suddenly became rich and bought a house with a big extravagant bathroom with a sunk in jacuzzi type tub , that I could sip wine and have candles lit ! Than that wouldn't be for washing per se , but for relaxing and looking around enjoying my wealth and beautiful new bathroom ! ;)
But sinse that's not the case, I just take showers ,I have no desire to sit and get washed in my little dinky old tub and bathroom ! :D
As a little kid baths were common and till I was about 10 that's all I ever had were baths, no showers! Lots of adults too, some homes only had a bathtub and no showers back than !;)
Scrabjan1 05-25-2021, 12:40 PM That bear commercial is totally offensive. Is it for Quilted Northern or is it Charmin? Can anyone imagine back in 1971 hearing ‘Enjoy the Go.’ Mr. Whipple is a breath of fresh air next to that. Lots of ads offend me especially on the iPhone. We might have come a long way but some things should stay private especially for women. Some little kid doesn’t want to see feminine hygiene protection. Talk about pushing the envelope!
I never take baths. Wally took showers in the first house because he talks of a shower after gym and turning off the hot water valve.

It's for Charmin. If they were going for product recognition, they got it.
Let me say this about that--don't use the stuff! It'll clog up pipes (particularly old cast iron), sewers, and septic tanks, particularly with young kids using it. Use Angel Soft, per a plumber.
CosmicCharlie 05-25-2021, 03:44 PM not a fan of women's diapers ads - geeez ... just a turn off thinking about it - never mind seeing it - & they show these women active like a high schooler - wishful thinking
Dude111 03-21-2026, 07:41 PM I have not had a shower in 20 years. I got used to baths and they save water. Im glad I am not the only one here who likes Baths!
