Mark was unnecessary because once Sam married Ann, it made Mark and Barbara step siblings by marriage.

Ed might have a been an ass, but Barbara and Julie did love him as you said, and they didn’t seem as crazy about Sam as they did about Ed.

I can’t stand him either. While I dislike Sam, Nick is even worse. I hated the episode where Nick and Ann spent the night together and Ann came back in the morning with Julie waiting and expecting for her instead of vice versa.
