View Full Version : Judy's poem to Ms Landers
In the 'Beaver and Ivanhoe' episode. The one she reads on behalf of the class welcoming Ms Landers return back to class after an ( apparent ) illness.. The final rhyming line "....and we're also very glad, that you did not die". I did and still do laugh out loud at that. So tactless and yet so excusably innocent due to their young ages. That's comedy.
It must have been uproariously edgy back during the first viewings.

For writers that drop the ball reusing episode storylines over, and over. They hit homeruns on characters lines. Most everything Judy says is pure gold.
stevea 04-06-2021, 03:38 PM Judy responds to most things said by the boys, by starting it with, "Huh", meant as, I don't buy a thing you're saying, not what did you say.
CosmicCharlie 04-07-2021, 08:37 PM did Judy Grow TOO Tall to continue as a regular in the later seasons ? she sure grew A LOT !
stevea 04-07-2021, 11:05 PM I'd vote yes on that one.

I just figured that she was the kid who got "held back" a couple times, as an example to the other kids what happens when you don't apply yourself.

lol yup
i remember some kids like that but she was no dummy ... :)
GentlemanJim 04-08-2021, 12:20 PM Perhaps the teachers were flawed, and became dependent upon her gushing patronage?
When I was just a little tyke, there was this kid who lived across from my baby sitters, who was 5-6 years older than I was, famous for being a dullard. Went our separate ways.
By the time I reached the 10th grade, I was shocked to see him as still a senior. He graduated highschool at the age of 21. Very popular with the sports coaches
stevea 04-08-2021, 04:10 PM dullard? Doesn't sounds good. Get out Websters...

I would have branded Judy a sycophant, but I was too lazy to look it up. :p
vitoscotti 04-09-2021, 01:49 AM Searching why Jeri Weil left LITB I found this.
"The reason that I left Beaver was because my womanhood was starting to show. So, they used to like, tape me down.”
Very sad if true. Such a wonderful actress to be treated like that.

Genuinely curious here: what does Ms Weil mean by "tape me down"?
Edit: A light bulb just went off in my head. As to "taping her down", I hope it doesn't mean what I fear she meant.
stevea 04-09-2021, 01:54 PM I think it does, unfortunately (but I'm not totally sure). Amazing she came back for New Leave it to Beaver. Different producers, though.
Tankeryanker 04-09-2021, 02:18 PM I doubt it was actual tape.
Many women even today use cloth (like an ACE bandage) and wind it around their chest and back area to help with the bounce.
It would have been traumatic as a kid for me though if they approached it to me wrong.
stevea 04-09-2021, 02:25 PM I was picturing it as gauze with tape. An Ace bandage doesn't sound so bad.
They should have kept her, but we don't really know exactly how her departure happened. Since she appeared a couple of times in season 4 it probably wasn't planned.
If I ever get back on Facebook I'll see if Rusty can be asked (or someone still on there can ask). He may not know since he had just left, though.
vitoscotti 04-09-2021, 02:33 PM Rest of artcle.
Jeri Weil quit acting after leaving the show
After Leave It to Beaver, Weil went on to become a real estate agent and writer. In her interview with the Baby Boomers Talk Radio, she said her experience on the show turned her off from the industry, which is why she never pursued an acting career.
“I didn’t even try,” Weil explained. “I wanted nothing to do with it — The reason that I left Beaver was because my womanhood was starting to show. So, they used to like, tape me down
The former child star said that she grew so “tired” of the whole idea, that she left the show. “After that, I had like a bad taste in my mouth, for the whole thing,” Weil added.
In a time where body positivity and acceptance are becoming an overdue norm, Weil’s experience may seem bizarre and unnecessary. But it seems it was a common practice in film and TV. Janet Jackson once revealed that her chest was bound while filming Good Times in the ‘70s.
CosmicCharlie 04-09-2021, 02:33 PM Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz was ALSO taped down, many times she spoke of it ...
stevea 04-09-2021, 02:38 PM That's a shame, but at least it wasn't a unique situation. I just checked and she was around 12 at the time (b. 5/15/1948).
stevea 04-09-2021, 02:43 PM In the late 50s it appeared that Lauren Chapin of Father Knows Best was "developing." At least it appeared they let HER.
vitoscotti 04-09-2021, 02:48 PM Jeri Weil interview on Baby Boomers Radio. I believe this is the interview where Jeri Weil was quoted in the article I posted.

Beaver may have done well to restrain his war on Judy and just let the biological clock work it's magic.
She's beautiful in this photo;

I am not so sure it is her. You can google her name, click on images, and that one comes up with a lot more pictures that look much more like her.

That's not her. The picture looks modern, she'd be way older than that. Plus you can see her as an adult in an episode of The New Leave It To Beaver and she looks nothing like that photo.
CosmicCharlie 04-09-2021, 07:51 PM sorry folks that's NOT Jeri Weil
here is the source and there are MANY pictures in the pages saying Jeri Weil and obviously some are NOT her ... starting with that one
