Well, BBC2 cut off viewers first from the picture then a few seconds later the sound of a "Steptoe and Son" rerun (with a knock on the door being the last sound) before the picture went to the station logo as the offcamera female announcer urged viewers to 'Stand By For An Important Announcement' and that they would be joining BBC One. ..and then nothing for about thirty seconds before she repeated the 'Stand By For An Important Annoncement' and more dead air. They repeated this several times before FINALLY going over to BBC One[five minutes after cutting off "Steptoe and Son"] and getting on with the announcing the Queen Mother's Death that day in 2002 (and even that didn't go without a hitch -as the announcer forgot to change his burgundy tie to a black one and a black suit which had been rehearsed countless times with the suits and ties in a special locker for that exact occasion).
Just goes to show that the BBC doesn't have the best or most accurate track record for announcing prominent folks' passings!
