George Segal, the banjo player turned actor who was nominated for an Oscar for 1966's “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” and starred in the ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs,” died Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, his wife said. He was 87.

“The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery," Sonia Segal said in a statement.

A native of Great Neck, New York, Segal was always best known as a comic actor but his most famous role was in a harrowing drama, 1966's “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.”

The entire cast of the film, based on Edward Albee’s acclaimed play, was nominated for Academy Awards: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton for starring roles, Sandy Dennis and Segal for supporting performances. The women won Oscars, the men did not.

To younger audiences, he was better known for playing magazine publisher Jack Gallo on the long-running NBC series “Just Shoot Me" from 1997 to 2003, and as grandfather Albert “Pops” Solomon on the “The Goldbergs” since 2013.

I did not see that coming. My prayers are with his family & friends & the cast and crew of The Goldbergs. George’s acting was introduced to me from Look Who’s Talking / Kiristey Alley & John Travolta & Bruce Willis.

Have The Goldbergs wrapped up there season yet? If not I hope they deticate the Season Finale to him.

Will TVLAND be having A Goldbergs Marathon with episodes of George Segal?

George Segal. Thank you for your talents and everything you gave in the entertainment industry.

rest in peace..

I read in article https://deadline.com/2021/03/the-goldbergs-tribute-george-segal-dead-1234721312/

that this week is currently filming season finale, it is unclear if the death for the story could be mentioned. Also unclear if Goldbergs were renewed for season 9

Just Shoot Me was a good show that seems largely forgotten. He was an asset.

For years I had a recording of the wizard of oz from 1987 george segal describing the events of his new show "take five." Loved his tag line..."who needs car chases?" (Nah nanna nah nuh!). Apparently that show needed car crashes as it crashed and burned.

Sigh, I just HATE when beloved actors die while still active/on the job (naturally or otherwise), especially when he or she is a series regular on a current TV show. I wouldn't want to do a 10th season of The Goldbergs without George Segal. I guess the 9th season of The Goldbergs will probably wind-up being its last.:crying:
