Segal died Tuesday of complications from bypass surgery, according to his wife, Sonia. Although Segal earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1967, he is also remembered for starring in two network sitcoms later in life: Just Shoot Me!, which earned him two Golden Globe nominations, and The Goldbergs (https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/112421-season-8-discussion/page/5/#comments). As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Segal "was most associated with comedy and playing brainy, neurotic characters, Segal's acting range was considerable...Segal, however, did comedy the best. He starred for seven seasons (1997-2003) on the NBC workplace sitcom Just Shoot Me! as Jack Gallo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzxBRHHLuQM), the roguish, many-times-married publisher who employs his journalist daughter (Laura San Giacomo) at his fashion magazine, Blush. And starting in 2013, he was still going strong as Pops Solomon, a grandfather always on the lookout for the ladies, on the ABC's 1980s-set The Goldbergs (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheGoldbergs/comments/mbt42i/george_segal_aka_pops_passes_away_at_age_87/)." Segal also had many memorable appearances with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE4TGRZ9iQI). Segal got to reunite with his Just Shoot Me! castmates twice last year -- in March on David Spade's Lights Out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yGmjcO-OJg) and as part of a Hulu reunion in June (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYEU1C6d08U). "Today we lost a legend," (https://preview.redd.it/oee4w4d2ovo61.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&79b0545c) tweeted The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg. "It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy. By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark. I think these memories say it all..."

This is so sad. I love the Goldbergs (watch every episode and usually several times) and he has always been a highlight of every episode.

I wonder if in hindsight, we should've known that something was up with George's health. What I mean is that, Pops in the past few years, wasn't featured in every episode. This current season, whenever we saw him, it seemed like he was sitting down and he seemed kind of tired. Maybe I'm overthinking it, since I'm basing this one what I immediately read from other commenters online.

Segal had a long career on the big screen, small screen, and stage. He was fortunate to work well into his 80s.

The Goldbergs cast pays tribute to George Segal (http://www.justjared.com/2021/03/24/the-goldbergs-cast-tribute-george-segal-following-his-untimely-death/)

Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, Sam Lerner, Wendi McLendon-Covey and AJ Michalka took to social media to remember the actor who portrayed Pops on their ABC comedy. “My heart is broken,” Giambrone tweeted (https://twitter.com/seangiambrone1/status/1374589101672779777). “I lost a dear friend. Working with George was an honor and some of the happiest moments of my life...What a sweet & wonderful man. He was my confidant & teacher. When he smiled it changed my day. I wish everyone could have met him. Prayers are with the family.” ALSO: Wednesday's Goldbergs episode ended with an In Memoriam video card (https://deadline.com/2021/03/the-goldbergs-tribute-george-segal-dead-1234721312/).

How very sad for him to pass away. He had a great legend career. Wonder how it would later affect Goldbergs rest airings.. Rest in peace.

Interesting that the Futon Critic should have an upcoming episode named "Who's Afraid of Brea Bee?," since George was one of the two guests of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Now, I'm wondering how Pops will be written out of the show, and if the upcoming episode will involve Brea Bee playing as Martha or Honey? Or if it'll just involve the risk of getting on Miss Bea's bad side.

The Goldbergs to bid a special farewell to George Segal next week (https://deadline.com/2021/04/the-goldbergs-abc-george-segals-final-episode-special-tribute-1234726795/)

The April 7 Goldbergs episode will feature Segal's final appearance on the ABC comedy as big-hearted grandfather Albert “Pops” Solomon. Following the episode, ABC and Sony Pictures Television will air a 45-second tribute to Segal, who died last week of complications from bypass surgery.

One of the writers stated (https://twitter.com/chrispbishop/status/1379950938706771971?s=21) on Twitter that they want to have Adam F. Goldberg come back and write a goodbye episode. I read that the real Pops Solomon actually died in 1995. But the series have already taken so many liberties regarding the timeline (for instance, Adam in real life didn't even get to high school until 1990 but here we are watching his senior year in Season 8 (https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/112421-season-8-discussion/page/5/#comments)), that it shouldn't be so problematic.

That would be really nice, hopefully Adam will write it.

I also found it very weird and jarring that George suddenly started sporting a moustache like the real "Pops" Solomon after spending the first seven seasons clean-shaven. That too really seemed to "age" him (even though Pops was supposed to be this "cool old guy" as well as the resident voice of reason) if that makes sense.

The Goldbergs will incorporate George Segal's death into its Season 9 premiere (https://www.thewrap.com/heres-how-the-goldbergs-will-handle-george-segals-death/)

“He passed away two days before we wrapped for the season, so we couldn’t address it,” star Wendi McLendon-Covey said at the TV press tour. “Our first episode of season nine — it’s tradition every time we open a season, it’s always a movie tribute — so I gotta hand it to our writers that we are doing a movie tribute that actually takes us on the journey of where to spread Pops’ ashes. So it is not only a traditional tribute, but it’s hysterically funny.” McLendon-Covey didn't reveal which movie the premiere will use.

For the record, the real Beverly Goldberg claims (https://twitter.com/goldilocks405/status/1441197485326680067?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1441197485326680067%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.redditmedia.com%2Fmediaembed%2Fpurfgl%3Fresponsive%3Dtrueis_nightmode%3Dfalse) that her father, the real Albert "Pops" Solomon was buried, not cremated (https://deadline.com/2021/09/how-the-goldbergs-season-9-premiere-paid-tribute-to-george-segal-1234841857/#comments).
