View Full Version : Were you entertained by "drunk" sitcom characters?
TVFactFan 03-12-2021, 06:56 PM I never found the humor when some of my favorite characters were not they normal selves and stumbling around all drunk. Not sure why that was supposed to be funny because in real life I wouldnt want to see a drunk relative or spouse in the house
Even though these characters was great I did not like them when they were drunk
Jack Tripper
George Jefferson
Fred Sanford
icecream 03-12-2021, 07:24 PM Usually no. But there have been some good ones. Otis the town drunk was always fun on The Andy Griffith Show. Their PC decision to have him removed is part of why the color seasons are so much weaker, besides Don Knotts leaving of course. On M*A*S*H, Margaret Houlihan was funny in a drunk episode.
brtcmfn 03-12-2021, 07:29 PM The ultimate pretend was Foster Brooks on the Dean Martin roasts.
And the Bob Newhart episode with Mr. Karlin, and Jerry- "More goo to go" :D

merlinjones 03-12-2021, 07:38 PM I liked Otis on Andy Griffith - good acting - funny, quirky, and endearing/sincere.
And the guy at the bar/club (Dick Wilson) on Bewitched had the best reactions to the magical shenanigans.

Thanks I will watch it later
icecream 03-12-2021, 09:39 PM George Jefferson was mean enough when sober. I can see him being an unbearable drunk.

I can only take drinks in small doses. I enjoyed Uncle Woodrew from S&S and Vinton Harper when he was drunk in an episode of MF.
broadmoor 03-13-2021, 03:02 PM As a rule, no, I tend to almost always find such depictions of drunkenness to be boorish and quite annoyingly unfunny. The attempts at humor of having a regular character get soused and act drunk never remotely amused me. Quite the opposite, usually.
The exceptions? When it's done in a VERY broad, almost cartoonish way, like with Hal Smith's appearances as "Otis," or Leon Errol doing his rubber-legs routine in his two-reelers, or perhaps even little bit-parts by guys in old films like Jack Norton or Arthur Houseman, who pop up like genial nuisances causing problems for our main characters. In these cases, there's a kind of over-the-top comic surrealism that makes them amusing to me. But these are really the only cases. Otherwise, I hate it.
Babalu 03-13-2021, 03:52 PM I guess it depends on the character. One of the funniest scenes ever in All in the Family was when Archie was drunk and locked in the basement.
In general, probably not. I never thought Foster Brooks was funny. But Arthur with Dudley Moore is one of my favorite movies.

The second Woodrew was funny. The first Woodrew I didn’t like too much.

He was only seen once I think which was a good thing lol
Yong Fang 03-19-2021, 09:46 AM I would be interested in hearing from children and family members of alcoholics of what they think of the Otis Campbell character on Andy Griffith. Probably to them it may not be that funny.
To be serious, I am somewhat of an Otis. Otis was a binge drinker, he had a job during the week and stayed sober but would get wasted on the weekends and time off of work. He had a nag for a wife and no children mentioned so he wasn’t really hurting anyone but himself. Hal Smith who played Otis didn’t drink.
Sort of my next point, I think I can tell if an actor plays drunk if they ever drank before. There is certain characteristics of drunken behavior and it isn’t exaggerated. Then there was Foster Brooks who I never found that funny, but he was not of my generation. Not necessarily into Dean Martin but he always seemed like a good guy (unlike Jerry Lewis who I couldn’t stand). To Martin, the drunk thing was an act on stage.
The characters on MASH mostly all got drunk at one time or another. Some could pull it off, others couldn’t.
In this horrible era of “cancel culture” and throwing things out that offend people, should we stop playing being drunk as something funny and entertaining? I don’t but again, can honestly see the point of view again of people who have alcoholics on the family seeing things different.
I can usually tell who drinks and who does
Chocolate Moose 03-19-2021, 12:34 PM it was mostly so fake looking. that's a hard no from me

When I was a kid I remember seeing an ad, can't remember the sponsor, showing Charlie Chaplin coming out of a saloon drunk and walking into a phone pole. It was contrasted with the reality of alcoholism. What some people consider funny, isn't funny to others. For many children of alcoholics, the tension, the fighting, the beatings are what they remember. No matter how innocent or funny the fictional depictions are, it still has a tragic flip-side.
I knew of many WW2 veterans who would never watch a war movie or TV show because they knew the reality of war and didn't want a reminder of it.
Coffeecup 03-20-2021, 07:07 PM I sometimes wonder how the children of the actor playing the part felt. My dad Hal Smith plays a drunk! Did Hal's child get teased at school.??

I remember Foster Brooks also appeared in an episode of Mork & Mindy doing his drunk schtick (I thought he was pretty funny) but I don't remember what the episode was about anymore.
