EXCLUSIVE: Rob Zombie Set to Helm THE MUNSTERS Film for Universal

Rock icon and horror director Rob Zombie has been tapped to bring the classic sitcom family, "The Munsters", to the big screen. Zombie, who has directed over a half dozen horror films over the past 15 years or so, including a pair of Halloween films and his Firefly series, also wrote the screenplay for Universal.

Zombie has professed his love for the original series many times over the years, claiming to have seen each episode “at least 17 times.” In fact, he recently joined "The Munsters" star Butch Patrick for a commentary track on the film Munster, Go Home!, released on Blu-ray by Shout! Factory last year.




Production on the film is currently set to begin in Budapest in early May.

Two of Zombie’s usual suspects have been cast as leads in the comedy with Jeff Daniel Phillips set as Herman Munster and Zombie’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, set as Lily Munster. Dan Roebuck, Jorge Garcia and Richard Brake have also joined the cast in major roles and Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, has also joined on in a supporting role.

No release date has been set at this time.

Rob Zombie has confirmed his long-rumored resurrection of "The Munsters" is really happening. The musician-director announced the news on his Instagram page Monday.

On Monday, singer and filmmaker Rob Zombie officially unveiled a first look at the cast of The Munsters, which includes Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, and Dan Roebuck as Grandpa Munster.

"Since Halloween is rapidly approaching I thought it was the perfect time to MEET THE MUNSTERS!," Zombie wrote on Instagram. "Direct from the set in good old Hungary I present Herman, Lily and The Count sitting in front of the newly completed 1313 Mockingbird Lane."

Rob Zombie announced on Instagram that the "Munsters" character Zombo will be appearing in his upcoming film version of the horror-themed, Fred Gwynne-starring '60s sitcom.

"After 56 years! The man… the myth… the legend returns! The one and only ZOMBO!" Zombie wrote on Instagram.



Originally played by the late actor Louis Nye (The Steve Allen Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Zombo is a TV horror host with whom Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) becomes enamored to the chagrin of his father Herman (Gwynne).

The filmmaker has yet to announce who will portray Zombo.

I made it to the end of the movie - which is rare lately. It was just kind of blah.
Bad plot. No Marilyn or Eddie. It took awhile to get going but picked up towards the end - then -it just - ended. It just stopped. Actress who played Lily did a good job - kept it very close to the original. Actor who played Herman did a different take on him. It was okay but definitely different than Fred Gwynne. It was made on the cheap and it showed at times.
