View Full Version : Would you be willing to lose MeTV & Antenna TV for Streaming?

Recently we picked up Roku Channel & Pluto & Peacock & Hulu & Paramont plus. A lot of streaming devises are carrying what is on Me TV & Antenna TV. Plus shows from Decades and I don’t even receive that channel, for less commercials and no editing.

I feel like there is no reason to hold on to Me TV & Antenna TV BUT I enjoy some of the promos and there Special Programming stunts. Although cable is so high in addition that sappy long commercials editing and credit crunches makes me think is it worth holding onto it? I’m afraid sooner or later the cost of streaming will go up than when Me TV & Antenna TV might be modernized or gone altogether.

My question is Would you be willing to loose Me TV & Antenna TV for Streaming?

Some of the streaming services do not make the "full library" of a show available; even for the top tier subscribers. Some people think this is done to discourage people saving/recording an entire series.

It's not even sitcoms or older shows, a lot of what I call mindless shows that I use for background (reality tv stuff~ pawn stars, storage wars, hoarders) can not be found in its entirety but a few episodes from each season and entire seasons omitted.

I think Antennae and MEtv do better by showing the entire run of series even though they are butchered for commercials.

Yes your right! I guess it’s got it’s positives & negatives.

Ironically it would probably be easier in many ways to start a streaming add on with classic shows from the 50-70's because those shows rarely used preexisting pop hit's of the era. A lot of shows starting around WKRP thru the mid 2000's or so have licensing issue's and get stuck in streaming limbo because so many of them use music needle drops and streaming wasn't a thing when those shows originally airred or were cut for syndication or cable reruns.

No! Afraid what might start out free, will start charging a monthly fee. Also, there are still those who live in areas with no viable internet access.

Definitely a negative if you don’t have internet.

MeTV at the moment has many old shows that I don't care for while Antenna TV has shows like Three's Company, The Facts Of Life and Wings that can be found on streaming apps.

And the CHARGE network which currently airs shows like CHIPS, Knight Rider, Magnum P.I. can be seen as a sub-channel on the STIRR app.

lol yes! They pretty much got you either way. It’s a tricky decision to make. Hmmm..

Streaming can be disappointing when many episodes are not in the library.

For example, Hulu and CBS All Access (soon to be Paramount+) are missing a lot of I Love Lucy episodes. I get Decades, so I started recording on my DVR, and Decades airs most if not all episodes. (Can't confirm 100% but it definitely runs episodes not on the streaming services).

Hulu and CBS have some type of agreement that both I Love Lucy, Brady Bunch and a few other shows are on both streaming platforms.

Interestingly, Hulu has some episodes of The Brady Bunch that CBS All Access does not have in its library, but both are incomplete.

And other shows like Three's Company and Laverne & Shirley: ViacomCBS appears to want to keep these shows for Logo and PlutoTV, rather than make them available on CBS All Access/Paramount+.

Interestingly though Pluto has on Demand, and Three's Company is there, but a lot of commercials. (Happy Days is not in the On Demand). And Happy Days appears to be very limited on both Pluto and CBS All Access.

Sometimes however, streaming is more complete while the broadcaster decides to skip episodes. For example, Amazon has all The Cosby Show and A Different World. Bounce TV which airs A Different World on Saturday mornings, is on Season 6 now but decided to skip episodes 1-3 of Season 6. My DVR confirmed it as I have set a recurring recording. I verified and at least two of them were the Rodney King/ riot episodes.

I think MeTV is good for Bonanza and Gunsmoke. It airs episodes not available on streaming. (Although INSP has Bonanza and might have the Lost episodes). I know streaming is very limited with Bonanza (just some season 1/2 which might be public domain episodes).

what makes Happy Days limited on Pluto tv?

Both have pros and cons. If everything was to go to only streaming, your monthly entertainment bill would skyrocket. Just the cable internet bill alone, minus any monthly streaming subscription will soon exceed $100 a month. With inflation on the constant rise, most will have to make some tough cuts in the near just to keep their head above water.

Just have a suspicion that all this free entertainment that is available right now on the net is fish bait.

its not really free because you need the internet in order to see these streaming services. So in my case its $50 a month

what makes Happy Days limited on Pluto tv?

Seems like they keep playing the same limited selection of episodes from Seasons 2 and 5. Seems odd they named the channel Happy Days but they show more Laverne and Shirley and Mork and Mindy than they do Happy Days. And when the channel launched in November the announcement said all 11 seasons. That sure was false advertising.

I have noticed that. Like last night I was watching Happy Days and then all of a sudden it switched to Laverne and Shirley and when I woke up this morning I see that its now Mork and Mindy

If you have a digital antenna plus streaming, I'm not sure why you would need to choose between. Enjoy both.

In any event, I made the choice so far. I much prefer having Me-TV, Antenna TV, Decades, Cozi, H&I, and Movies! via digital antenna (for free) to cable or streaming. In my area the digital signals have a better picture than cable anyway. And I'm not interested in dark or relevant contemporary fare.

Also, there is an old-fashioned charm to pot luck of episodes as they are run - it allows you to see things and learn things you might not think of (or know of) if only choosing to stream specific predetermined things. And there is the fun of knowing you are having a shared experience with others out in TV land as they watch along with you.

The retro digital channels have been a lifesaver the past year as I try to play Pollyanna in this wearisome time and keep my spirits up. A friend said "You can't just be an ostrich with your head in the sand" -- my reply: "You don't know me very well, do you?"

Thanks Me-TV, et al.

Decades is better than Me-TV to me but I wont miss it that much since it only had appeal during the weekend binge. Plus I already seen 3 cycles of Mary tyler moore at 2pm and that's only because I am working from home. So their primetime schedule is kind of weak and cant compete with Antenna TV from 5pm to 10pm.

That's like their TPIR: the Bob Barker era channel, which so far just cycles through the 1982 episodes.

My biggest complaint with streaming is the availability of tv shows. If one streaming service doesn't have what you are looking for, you have to subscribe to another one and so forth. Not to mention, the costs can add up over a period of time if you have multiple streaming services.

I feel streaming is very overrated and I'll just stick to TV and dvds, even though I don't watch tv nearly as much as I use too

I would hope no one would subscribe to another streaming service for 1 show

For example, I like a show on Hulu but I have no interest in getting it because all the current options I have makes me forget about that one show.

Sorry if there is any miscommunication on this post. NONE is loosing Me TV or Antenna TV for streaming. I was asking mainly for myself. I was contemplating on if I should give up cable for streaming mainly to save some money. Everybody brought up ALOT of fantastic points. I appreciate everyone’s input on this. So thank you to all posters who have responded and those who might still respond as well.

Unfortunately we have a television that you can’t hook an antenna to.

Pluto is better with Three's Company ( I think ) but I've seen it go to a commercial break and then randomly replay a scene that was right before the commercial break. I thought Pluto had fixed those issues but they seem to persist.

Commercials are annoying too.

I get a lot of Betfair Casino Ads with a lady who says she can play without going to a casino anywhere, even without her bra on. I think these are local ads targeted on my location.

Through Logo, I have to bear through MTV reality show and RuPaul Drag Race ads.

On Antenna, I'm guilted with sad SPCA ads with animals that are freezing in cages.

I may have a strange issue with streaming, it's called burnout. I was thrilled when Pluto started The Price is Right channel. But I wanted to watch it every hour, and quickly became burnt out. Plus when a show has a daily schedule on Me-TV etc., you know they will run through the series at a normal pace. Pluto has about 200 eps of TPiR, so basically once a week they burn through another run. Although word on the street is they are trying to bring 'new' old eps at a rate of an extra 100 every few months.

I actually don't have any of those subscription streaming services, just an antenna. I live in a large metro area (Detroit), so we have a lot of free channels (78 channels) and there's pretty much always something on. Smaller markets may not be able to get many channels with just an antenna though.

It would be nice if there was a dedicated retro television streaming service. I'm pretty sure the reason why we haven't seen a MeTV streaming service is because of the broadcasting deals they made with the companies that own these tv shows. It looks like Paramount+ is the one that has the most retro tv shows to stream. Tubi isn't bad but I recalled them having more tv shows in the past such as Emergency or The Incredible Hulk, which were both taken down, presumably because of the broadcasting deals and ownership.

There are a lot of great free streaming services such as Tubi, Crackle and the Roku Channel. All of them have a good selection of classic shows.

Exactly what I was going to say. You can get streaming services that have all the classic shows that you want - and more - for free without even bothering to pay to get Netflix and all the +s (although I will try to get ESPN and ESPN+ for my KODI device next year to catch more out of market NHL games). It just helps to know where to look and to find out who has what. For example:

---Crackle in the US and CTV Throwback in Canada have shows from the Columbia/Screen Gems/Sony catalogue like "Bewitched", "I Dream Of Jeannie", and "The Partridge Family" plus the entire Norman Lear group of sitcoms.

---Pluto TV has shows from the CBS library like "Happy Days" and its spinoffs plus "The Addams Family" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" plus more to come, I'm sure!

---TUBI has many older classics that don't get shown on Crackle or Pluto, the best of which might be "The Donna Reed Show", "Family Affair", "Here's Lucy", "The Honeymooners", "Make Room For Daddy", and many more that I love to watch whenever I can. Later this month, watch for "Bewitched" Seasons 1 and 2.

---The only retro TV station I have here is CHCH TV channel 11 which has an excellent classic TV lineup that changes every month or so yet never fails to deliver my favorites every weekday.

So you see, there's no reason to pay for what you want when there's so much good stuff out there that's available for free. If you need any proof of this, go to the DVD/Streaming page tomorrow where I will tell you about an incredibly rare vintage find that I discovered on YouTube, of all places. You will be utterly amazed as I was when I saw it.
