View Full Version : Oh god, please don’t tell me this was Florida’s idea of a “treat”

ROAST?!! Really, Florida? A dinner you eat just about every other average week? I can see why James was always stressed and depressed. No, Florida. You’re supposed to get a certain treat that shows you’ve made an improvement and have some extra money, not some damn cheap $1 roast. What about new clothes, or some other breakfast option for a change, or two separate beds for J.J. and Michael or at least a bunk bed for them, or better yet, a good comb? I’m surprised she didn’t say oatmeal.

The sad thing is, she didn't spend $1, she spent$12(Which is like $50 in 2021) on a BAD ROAST. The Roast wasn't even GOOD! It made five people sick!:(

She would’ve gone down as the worst mother in TV history if she would’ve said oatmeal.

Yes…or how about:

Oatmeal - Monday-Wednesday
Pancakes, Bacon, and Eggs - Thursday-Friday
Cereal - Saturday
French Toast, Bacon, and Eggs - Sunday

That probably would’ve been a bit expensive but it would’ve been better than constant hard, lumpy, dry, burnt oatmeal every morning for breakfast. James was a very stressed and depressed man…and I can see why.

James was too proud and embarrassed and had too much pride sometimes. He should’ve just accepted the food stamps and shut up.

Yes, I think James’s problem was he didn’t believe in himself and thought he was too much of a failure and was too proud and had too much pride.

What kind of mother doesn't look and smell the meat before she buys it, though? Unless the store "painted" the meat pink/red, you can tell how bad it is.

I would’ve divorced Florida’s ass. It was bad enough that out of all the things she could’ve treated the family to, she treated them to a ROAST from Borgen’s, THE SAME STORE she would always complain about. But she treated them to that same roast that made them ill and didn’t even check the meat I bet. Oh yeah, television’s greatest sitcom mother.

She just acted in ways that other women wouldn't do, particularly in the seventies. She was behind severely in the times.

I see why James was always stressed and depressed. Remember the aftermath when the rest of the family was sick and J.J. was feeling great and he wanted a great big breakfast and Florida’s response was:

“One oatmeal coming up.” LOL.

Florida really could’ve treated the family to other things like more clothes, bunk beds, another breakfast option, etc. I know I definitely would’ve been upset if she said oatmeal for a “treat”. LOL.

LOL. Well, James wasn't that much of a treat, if he had no issues towards Florida working, they'd eat more than just oatmeal and bad meat.

The kids should of had their own room. Florida and James should of used the living room, but that's just me.

Sometimes Florida’s mind was messed up. A roast? Really? And once again, let me say there was so many things Florida could’ve treated the family to like:

Two separate beds or at least bunk beds for J.J. and Michael
A temporary breakfast option other than usual hard, lumpy, gooey, burnt oatmeal
New clothes
Going to eat out at a restaurant for once in their lives

A roast from Borgen’s, the same store that they would complain had the bad meat and was a ripoff all the time?!!! I think NOT.

Hell, bacon and eggs is a treat. Why couldn't they eat pancakes? I mean, all you need is flour, some eggs, milk, and a spatula.

#3 James was too proud
#4 James was too proud
#5 James was too proud
#6 Because The Evans lacked common sense when it came to the breakfast department
#7 Florida was content living the ghetto life and wanted to see the family suffer
#8 The writers didn’t elaborate on that
#9 Because of other “unspecified reasons”

Good Times Fans pointed this out. "In Season 5, the remaining Evans(JJ, Thelma, and Michael) were actually eating GOOD, pancakes and sausage.... They were pretty self sufficient.... As soon as Florida returned, they were eating oatmeal again.... Sad...."

LOL! Yeah, I saw a cereal box in one episode while she was gone. They were managing without her, but, as soon as she returned they went back to "kids" when they were no longer kids.

Exactly! It's like the actress desperately needed a reason to be around "kids" that were no longer really in need of her and who, at some point, would have left the nest.

Well, Florida wouldn’t allow that stuff because apparently “if she’s happy and content with the poor life, the rest of the family has to be”.
