Usually I'm always on the waitresses side, Mel could be a jerk.... But one that comes to mind is the episode where Mel gets a time clock and the waitresses WHINE about it and act like he's some kind of MONSTER for wanting a time clock, I mean COME ON! I understand the whole, "It's like a big family here!" thing, but what business doesn't have a time clock?! Maybe it was more common in the 70s not to have one, but I dunno....

Of course I sided with the waitresses later when he wanted to dock them but not pay them overtime.

Also just the way they generally talked to him sometimes was over the top... I mean Mel might have been a jerk, but not many places would you get away with talking and YELLING to your boss like that. Most places I've worked if you even make a semi- snide remark to the boss, they start the whole, "Well I guess I'm gonna have to put my Help Wanted sign out"

They should have expected more of themselves  Being a waitress for 10 years with no desire to look for something else

True its so many better jobs than getting yelled at by mel and serving food. Especially since they was over 30

Yeah, or if they wanted to stay in the waitressing business, try for a better more upscale restaurant ! Better tips ! ;):)

Time clock

My first job had one. It really documented those arriving late and those attempting to leave early.

My current one requires one as well. Too many people who are supposed to be "honorable" and using the last 30 minutes of their Friday shift are AWOL. ha ha

It always seemed to me that Mel's Diner wasn't that busy, frankly I always thought the women were lucky to have jobs, the traffic never seemed to justify three fulltime waitresses.
