Composer Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) was born in Los Angeles. He began studying music as a boy, and was inspired to go into film composing when he listened to Miklos Rosza’s score for Hitchcock’s Spellbound. Goldsmith did further music study at LA City College and then found work with CBS.
By the mid-fifties, Goldsmith was writing music for several TV series. He scored his first feature, a Western titled Black Patch, in 1957. In 1963, he received his first Oscar nomination, for the score for Freud.
When Goldsmith wrote the score for Planet of the Apes in 1968, he became one of the go-to composers for science fiction films. A little over a decade later, he (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Jerry_Goldsmith) wrote two famous scores for sci-fi films, one of which may be his most often heard composition of all:

Goldsmith’s main theme for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (https://www.startrek.com/news/looking-back-at-the-music-of-the-motion-picture) was later re-arranged by Dennis McCarthy as the theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Goldsmith later scored four additional Star Trek features, and wrote the theme for Star Trek: Voyager. He also wrote the music for sci-fi films such as Logan’s Run, Alien, and Innerspace.
Goldsmith won an Oscar for his score for The Omen. A partial listing of just the other films which brought him Oscar and/or Golden Globe nominations includes The Sand Pebbles, Patton, Chinatown, Poltergeist, Hoosiers, and L.A. Confidential. He also won five Emmys for his television music.
