View Full Version : New Facts about the creation of the spinoff series Flo
TVFactFan 02-08-2021, 05:53 PM 1. Polly Holiday was actually approached about having her own show during the 1st season of Alice
2. Since they gave her creative control, she came up with the idea of having the character return home to Texas to marry a local politician who would soon become governor and make her the first lady of Texas
3. CBS didnt like the idea of her moving back to Texas
4. During season 4 of Alice, a renewed interest in American TV shows featuring the American South had emerged since Dallas and Dukes of Hazzard became popular and that made the creation of Flo go into production
5. Polly was responsible for the show's production and worked closely with the writers, producer and directors to shape it
The ratings for season 2 is still unknown because for some reason they were not listed beyond 30 for the 1980-81 season
Alice, "Life Behind the Counter in Mel's Greasy Spoon", by Barry M. Putt Jr, 2019
Some weeks are known, via outlets like Broadcasting magazine. The numbers were not near the top 30 for the overall season.

This is 1980-81 not 1979-80, but I was looking for both. I finally see the ratings for checking in which was bad at all. #34. I always assumed it was 79 lol And I finally see the rankings for the ropers was lower than 70
So Flo ended its first season at #7 and landed in the sixties in season two. What happened?

The first season was just six episodes, I think, and it had a great lead-in. That changed with season two, which was also the season affected by a writer's strike.
I haven't been able to find any complete/final rankings for the 1980-81 TV season- anyone? I think full ratings for those years, and even into the '80s, are scarce- I found a couple from the '70s, but that's about it. USA Today would publish the final season ratings, and also TV Guide for a period of time through the '80s and possibly into the '90s.

Flo couldnt compete with Little House on the Prairie on Mondays at 8pm. The first season it didnt have much competition, Monday Night Football and a Monday Night Movie and neither show was in the top 30
TVLegend 02-12-2021, 10:09 PM I laughed my ass off when Flo was removed from the opening credits. Especially when Belle got added.
It went from Alice, Vera, and Flo clapping and cheering on Mel as he walks down the diner with a tray in his hand in his chef suit
to
Alice and Vera clapping and cheering on Mel and quickly cuts to the next clip

Flo always reminded me of The Ropers. They both had a weak side character and both lasted only two seasons.

For years I thought the 1st season of the Ropers aired after TC but it was after taxi at 10pm

Maybe the first season lured in way more viewers because there wasn’t much too watch that season
