10
Charlie
As lovable as he is, Charlie is the least intelligent character on the show. He is often the last to get a joke, if he gets it at all. Charlie rollerblades to the beat of his own drum, starting out as a deliveryman for a greeting card service and then becoming Del's business partner at Eagle Greetings. Charlie is a naturally comedic character, but it's unfortunate that he is meant to miss out on key things in the show.
9
Joe
Joe is good at his job as a veterinarian and is a driven young individual, but he is not proven to have the best judgment or common sense. Caroline dates Joe in the second season, even though she initially thinks he is too young for her.
Joe is both thoughtless and foolish to play with Caroline's heart by sleeping with another woman right as he is navigating next steps with Caroline.
8
Randy
Randy seems like a smart guy, but he gets the smallest amount of screen time out of all of Caroline's boyfriends. The Wisconsin beau has a few quirks, like becoming deathly afraid of a halted subway or making Caroline do throwback dances. The biggest question is, why does Randy pursue Caroline when he knows that she is in a relationship? Just when she starts to figure things out, Randy and Richard both complicate things.
7
Julia
Although she is painted as superficial and is obsessed with money, Julia is very cunning. She impulsively falls for Richard Karinsky and hides vital information from him the night before the two marry: Caroline has called and left a message that could change Richard's mind. Julia gets her way and marries Richard. She works at Remo's for awhile and continually fends off Caroline's feelings for Richard, but it still doesn't work out for Julia in the end.
6
Del
Charlie and Del are joined at the hip, working together and hanging out all the time. Del is smart in some ways and creates a successful business for himself, but he lacks empathy and can be a bit chauvinistic at times. Del has been through a couple of marriages already when the series begins, but he is surprisingly sensitive when Caroline realizes she needs to break off her engagement to him. The touching moment evaporates when Del admits to sleeping with the caterer of his and Caroline's almost-wedding just one day after cancelling. The man doesn't always think through his actions or his words.
5
Remo
Remo is a genius to have created Remo's Ristorante. The thriving Italian eatery is the perfect spot for a lunch among friends or a first date between two characters. Remo is very perceptive. He knows how to keep the dining room and the kitchen afloat, but he also lends an ear to his loyal patrons' daily problems.
4
Trevor
Trevor is Caroline's boyfriend for the third season of the sitcom. He is one of the most intelligent men that Caroline dates, showing logical thinking and emotional sensitivity. Trevor puts up with Caroline's cumbersome feelings for Richard for too long, though.
He knows that she still has feelings for another man, but Trevor still commits to Caroline and gets ready to move in. Caroline takes her infatuation one step too far when she follows Richard to Spain, only to return to an empty apartment. Trevor is smart enough to finally accept that Caroline's heart is always with Richard.
3
Caroline
Caroline Duffy is a sharp lady, but she misses the point sometimes. Like most good sitcoms, Caroline in the City's comedy is often derived from misunderstandings both great and small. Caroline is usually at the center of such confusions, and it can take her awhile to get out of the sticky situations. That being said, Caroline has wisely crafted a strong career for herself, and she puts her mind to good use to help herself and the people she loves. Her resilience carries Caroline far in love and in life.
2
Richard
Richard Karinsky has a sophisticated humor akin to his sitcom neighbor, Niles Crane from Frasier. Though Richard's reactions are full of put-downs, he also doles out some clever witticisms, and he can be poetic when he is of the right mind.
It's clear that Richard is both an eccentric and intellectual man throughout his years in Caroline's life. He doesn't always make the wisest decisions, but he has a strong body of knowledge in his brain.
1
Annie
Annie Spadaro is the butt of Richard's jokes, but she is even more intelligent than he is. Annie is an independent woman, even though she lives with her mother and freely accepts Caroline's encouragement and support. It's not the kindest thing she does, but Annie shows her smarts when she blackmails Richard over his love letter to Caroline. Annie can be crass with her one-liners and innuendos, but she's a wise soul with a good heart.
