I just saw that at The Daily Mail, and could not believe it. From what I heard, he was rushed to the hospital with pain three weeks ago and just learned he had Stage 4 cancer. Started chemo and immediately went downhill. His death was insanely sudden, so fast that he probably didn't have time to register what was happening before he died. :(

Dustin Diamond, best known for playing Samuel "Screech" Powers on Saved by the Bell, died Monday morning after a battle with cancer. He was 44 years old.

Diamond's rep confirmed the news to PEOPLE in a statement: "We are saddened to confirm of Dustin Diamond's passing on Monday, February 1st, 2021 due to carcinoma. He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago. In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system; the only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution. Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful."

The statement continued:

"Dustin Diamond's name was synonymous with Screech, his character on the hit show Saved by the Bell. He portrayed Samuel "Screech" Powers for thirteen years as the cast of the show grew up together in all its series: Good Morning, Miss [Bliss], Saved by the Bell: The New Class, and Saved By the Bell: The College Years. He starred in a handful of reality television series including the 5th season of Celebrity Fit Club, The Weakest Link and Celebrity Boxing 2. He made cameo appearances in films such as Made (2001), Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003) and American Pie Presents: The Book of Love.(2009). In December 2013, Dustin appeared on an episode of OWN's Where Are They Now?and became a house member in the twelfth season of Celebrity Big Brother."

"We've been working alongside Dustin over the last twenty-one years. It goes without saying that our relationship cannot be categorized exclusively as business. He has become a larger part of our everyday life: A part of our family and friend circle. We are aware that Dustin is not considered reputable by most," the rep continued. "He's had a history of mishaps, of unfortunate events. We want the public to understand that he was not intentionally malevolent. He--much like the rest of those who act out and behave poorly—had undergone a great deal of turmoil and heartache. His actions, though rebukeable, stemmed from loss and the lack of knowledge on how to process that pain properly. In actuality, Dustin was a humorous and high-spirited individual whose greatest passion was to make others laugh. He was able to sense and feel other peoples' emotions to such a length that he was able to feel them too—a strength and a flaw, all in one."

"Dustin Diamond was a character in and of himself: an unpredictable spitfire who always left us shocked, but never left us bored," the rep said, adding in conclusion, "We are thankful he trusted us enough to share his genuine, authentic self with our team. We wish you knew him in the way that we did. We please ask that you give room for privacy to our team and Mr. Diamond's family during this tragic time, as we grieve and remember the memories spent together. This loss is as much stinging as it is sudden."

Diamond's rep confirmed the actor's cancer diagnosis to PEOPLE last month. A week later, on Jan. 21, the rep said Diamond had started chemotherapy for stage 4 small cell carcinoma, a cancer that commonly occurs in lungs, but can also manifest in the prostate or gastrointestinal tract.

A second round of chemotherapy was being scheduled and Diamond was also set to begin physical therapy in the near future, according to NBC News.

Diamond played Screech on the original Saved by the Bell, which ran for four seasons from 1989 to 1993 on NBC. He was the only main cast member who did not reprise his role for the Peacock reboot of the series, which debuted its first season last November.

I knew a woman once that happened to. If I remember she was in her early 40s at the time. She went to the doctor to see about a persistant pain she was having in her shoulder I think it was, and apparently she wasn't suffering any other symptoms of having anything wrong. Shockingly, they told her she had cancer but it was spread all over her body and there really wasn't anything they could to help her and she didn't have long to live. She died about 5 weeks later (they gave her about 6 weeks) so she lived a little longer after her diagnosis than Diamond did.

OMG. It's hard enough as it is for people to be told they have maybe only six months. Imagine being told you only have six weeks! Life can be so unbelievably cruel. :(

I just find it rather hard to believe you can have cancer all over your body and have virtually no symptoms! I don't know it just doesn't make sense to me.

I never watched the show I will admit but it seems like this guy was in the trap of a lot of child actors who play an iconic role (and although I have NEVER seen one episode of this show, know (somewhat) who “Screech” was).

It seems that a lot of child actors just don’t get it together after their career is over with. Many dont seem to have a plan for life. Many seem to lose their money over time, maybe “squander” is too harsh a word, I think a lot of them make the big money and think the money will last forever and end up living above their means. I read about one actress who played the daughter on “Gimme a Break” (the nerdy middle daughter) that she bought a house and then the show was cancelled. Gary Coleman seems to the “poster child” of losing it all although his parents stole most of his money.

Like Gary Coleman being “Arnold”, I think this guy had a tough time having his own identity and self worth with people who recognized him calling him “Screech”, which I would vehemently hate. Probably was difficult to impossible for him to get other acting jobs because again, he is “Screech” (who was a lovable loser type). So like Gary Coleman he seemed stuck in the typecasting and has to play off if it.

Diamond had some problems in his adult life and went to jail at one point for being in a bar fight in Wisconsin and him pulling out a knife and hurting someone. No doubt, some drunk Bozo started calling him “Screech” as a taunt too far and with alcohol, it was on.

I will say that some child actors do move on with life. How they are protected from losing their assets and income due to managers or family members. The Jackie Coogan law didn’t save Gary Coleman. Diamond should have made more than a million dollars on this show, but he died a broke schlep.

Ronnie Howard as a public service should have a yearly seminar for child actors under the age of 21 to teach them how to handle fame at such a young age. But Howard had some things going for him, a strong, independently (somewhat to is) wealthy family already in the “business” that kept him grounded. However, Howard cannot relate to being an adult and no one in “the business” wanting you because he never stopped working, literally.

His passing is unfortunate.

It was also sad that the rest of the cast hadn't reconciled with him prior to his passing, and he was basically excluded from the reboot of the series. Kind of a shame actually that Mark Paul Gosselaar and Mario Lopez says nice things after he passes, but while he was alive, they didn't want to associate with him.

He was on the series from the beginning, the College Years and the New Class. Apparently, the New Class lasted 7 years, with Screech on from Season 2-the end. It seems that he played the part until he was 23 or 24 years old as that series ended in 2000. The salary from that spinoff series likely didn't amount to much and likely didn't help him transition to something more substantial.

As far as him as a child actor, well, he probably should not have participated in the spinoff series in his early 20s but instead pursued for a college education if he didn't get one.

Since he was only 24 when the 2nd series ended, he was still young enough to pursued a college education. Unfortunately, it probably wouldn't have spared him from dieing of cancer in his 40's.
