Dwayne Wayne and Whitley survived the purge, but lost in the shuffle was Denise’s friend and roommate Maggie, played by future Oscar winner Marisa Tomei. Let’s just hope she got her diploma from Hillman at some point.

I heard (https://differentworld.fandom.com/wiki/Maggie_Lauten) that A Different World (https://www.etonline.com/news/163731_17_things_you_forgot_about_a_different_world) was originally envisioned as being about a young white woman's experiences at going to an historically black college. Meg Ryan (https://eng.amomama.com/188516-a-different-world-behind-the-scenes-15-f.html) was originally going to play Maggie, but she dropped out to pursue her film career. I'm guessing that was when it decided to change into a spin-off of The Cosby Show centered on Denise Huxtable.
