The signature situation is starting to become ridiculous (ok it has been for months, but now I'm taking action). I don't want to have to disable them entirely or enforce a signature length rule, so please try and follow the below guidelines:

1) 1 or 2 photos at the most.. some of you have alot more then that.. not everybody is fortunate enough to have a dsl line or cable modem.. there are lots of 56k people out there so please be considerate

2) if the photo(s) you have in your signature is large, try and reduce it in height/width and file size in Paint Shop Pro or another one of those programs

3) try and keep your signature to 10-15 lines or less (I emphasize the word less).. if you have to scroll more then half a page of a signature that is crazy.. plus if you just have a one line reply and a huge signature that makes no sense

4) probably the most important thing you can do: POST YOUR SIGNATURE one time per topic.. it doesn't need to be posted 4-5 times in the same topic

5) you can go to the user cp/edit options and set it so your signature doesn't display every post.. so you can just make the checkmark for the first time you are posting a topic or reply

Feel free to add to this list for other suggestions to keep this under control.

I've noticed some people have about 4 - 5 tests about who you are. If we can just keep it as one test in your signature. But maybe that would fall under image.

Good rule because I was starting to get annoyed with people who have like seven full size pics in their siggy.

Yea, I've told Jenny over and over again to get rid of it and she refused.

Mine short. No pics, just past titles, Moo, and a reminder of just how annoying I can be. I want a pic but I dont feel like, and Jennys thing is fine on my comp.. everything is. Nice noo Compaq, but it makes the screen look werd and go the same speed but not smooth. I only have aol 5.0 tho so thats y it goes unsmooth. It's distracting with ALL that extra junk like what color jellybean r u.

Anyhoo, I agree with TJ's rules although there were only about 3 people whom I would have said seriously needed to trim their siggy's down.
I've taken note and gotten rid of one of my Amanda pics (although it was a very tough thing for me to do - I may need therapy to help me get over the loss :( ). I hope those people with the real long siggy's take note cos I'd really hate it if TJ disabled the siggy's altogether. I think they give the board character and I'd be real sad if we had to give them up.

I wouldn't say your siggy was too long - there are some that are a lot longer! I don't think your picture of Sharon is too big either. Marquees should count as a line (after all, it is a line of text - the only difference is that it's moving).
I wouldn't count smilies as pictures though cos they're real small.

This is just my opinion though - in the end TJ is the boss! :D

I really like all those tests in my sig but i'll cut it down to less...I solved the problem...:)

Great rule! I just counted someone's signature that is 147 lines long. I don't think my longest post ever was that long. Hell, I don't think my three longest posts combined were that long. Even on DSL it's a pain and a half to scroll through sigs that long. Plus, I'm on a 1152 x 864 resolution monitor. I can only imagine how long that is on an 800 x 600.

Who is this person that has 147 lines in their signature?? Report them! Maybe I should set up an illegal signature tip line.

The bandwith doesn't affect me at all since I have 400GB a month, I'm just more concerned with the 56k people who have to wait forever for pages to load.

Since this is my first time with an imaged sig, I wanna test it...

To the peeps with Jeremy Irons and Lisa Whelchel collages....great pics, but on my computer they are so big that they shift your post over, so that if I want to read what you wrote I have to scroll over on the bottom, to make the screen move horizontally. (hope that made sense).

I think part of the problem here is that siggys look different depending on your monitor settings and size, and there is no way we can know what people are using. For example, I had a siggy once that on my computer was fine, easily less than half a page. One day, I used the library's cpu, and on there, my siggy was HUGE! I immediately trimmed it down, to the point that on my cpu the quotes were in such a small font they were almost hard to read, but I figured they probably looked fine on other computers.

Also, TJ, you mentioned trimming down the size of pictures, but correct me if I am wrong, I thought the only way to put pics in sigs was to link them from the Internet. So unless someone has access to a web server they can dump their re-sized pics onto (which I usually do but don't for the summer) then you are at the mercy of what you find on the Internet. If there is some way to upload pics from your harddrive for your siggy, someone please let me know because I missed the boat on that one.

Yea. All you do is attach a pic to your post form your hard drive, as long as it's in jpg format. Then you right click on that picture, clock on properties, and copy the adress. Then you stick the adress in your sig with the [IMG]Picture[/IMG'] around it. Just get rid of the '.

Oh, OK, I think I get that. So I take the pic from my harddrive, post it on here, and then link to it off of sitcomsonline when I put it into my siggy? I never thought of doing it that way. Course like I said, usually I have access to web server space, and if I ever get my cpu working again, I will. But in the meantime, I'll have to try that.

Hmmm yeah I agree. Although, I DO have 3 pics...but all in all my signature is pretty short. Plus, my pics are small, but like others have said....Ive seen some signatures that are seriously WHICKED long and Im surprised nothings been said about it. I spent ages last night waiting for a page to load so I could read all the posts but it was just taking too long for your siggys to load so I lost my patience and gave up! I ended up not reading the thread at all.

Not trying to be hardass or anything, but some sigs are getting out of control again. Maybe that's why the boards are taking longer to load for me than usual?

Can I add another rule too? Get rid of the spacing cause there are some sige with huge spaces between text and it takes forever to scroll through them. My little scroller is getting tired and can't handle it anymore!

But truthfully, I've seen some seriouslly long siggys here. And I don't have a high-speed cable modem or anything. I'm running an ancient computer with an ancient modem, and most of the time, I can't let everything load before I go on to read another topic.

We're very fortunate to be allowed to have our siggys this way. I've been to plenty of other message boards where you aren't allowed to put a picture in your siggy...and then they only allow up to two lines of text!

No, the reason I bumped it up is because I'm one of those few ones who has dial-up and get this, a computer and modem from 1998. :eek: The shorter everyone's sigs are, the faster the boards are for me. And the faster the boards are for me, the happier I am. :D (And the less TJ has to pay for bandwith)

Like Slayer Faith said, we are lucky that TJ is so lenient in regard to our siggy's. On every other board I've been on you're not allowed pics in your siggy and sometimes you're not allowed a sig at all.

At the Martinaville BBS all you are allowed in your siggy is 50 characters, so all I have is my name and my martina site. And you can't even make it look pretty! Its just plain blue and gray.

Brandon I've been here a lot longer than you have, I think that I know the rules, I think that I know when my siggy is too long, the only reason I changed it before when you said something about it is because other posters such as Original Prankster and Slayer Faith said that their computers were slow and that they'd like it if some of us that have the longest siggies would shorten them. I'm sorry, but I had to say it.

I think Maegan's siggy is fine the way it is now. But personally, if I was her, I wouldn't shorten it anymore unless a moderator told me it was too long. They're the one's who should really decide how long siggys should be.

Not true. Brandon has been here longer then you. It is just, he has been banned a lot of times and had to get a new user name when he comes back.

I have a dial-up myself and have noticed that a lot of times these threads seemingly take forever to load, which is of course because of the enormous signatures. I'm thinking of removing the pic in my signature and just leave the URL to my website like I had it before. It looks better that way anyhow. My Fran avatar is good enough.

Another suggestion, if I may?

I know of messageboards that allow signatures but only if they meet a height/width requirement and file size requirement. Even with one picture, it can be difficult to load on a dial-up since some of them are well over 20 Kbs. Add that up with more pics in the sigs and it can be a long load.

Pics that are too long in height takes up space too when trying to scroll. Often times, I find myself waiting for the scrollbar to shorten when I'm here because of the loading times.

So, maybe there should be a limit cap on the pics. No pics over 15 kbs and possibly no pics over 250 pixels in height. Lots of groups do this to keep order and maintain a cleaner look in the forums.

If you notice, btw, I use rather small pics both in pixel size and file size. The Fran pic in my sig was about 10 kbs and about 200 pixels in height and width.

It's a suggestion of course, but it would help us dial-up folks out.

Great rule! I just counted someone's signature that is 147 lines long. I don't think my longest post ever was that long. Hell, I don't think my three longest posts combined were that long. Even on DSL it's a pain and a half to scroll through sigs that long. Plus, I'm on a 1152 x 864 resolution monitor. I can only imagine how long that is on an 800 x 600.

Good point too. I view my resolution at 800x600. I'm sure a lot of people with the longer sigs probably have their's set at a higher resolution as well.

Actually, I never had a problem with your signature. It's the ones with like 3 or more full size pics and so much text. I have one of the slowest computers here, and yours was fine. I also have an 800x600 resolution.

I have the slowest computer in the universe, hands down, no competition. I don't have a problem with anyone's sig now, but there have been some. (cough-NATE-cough.)

Istillgotit, can you please shorten your sig?!? It's ridiculously long, especially with spaces between quotes and that huge 20 line space at the bottom of it. Also, you have two too many images. Sorry for singling you out, but this post has been bumped up for a while and you haven't fixed it.
