About 947,000 total viewers watched last night's show, based on overnight ratings. That's less than half of Stephen Colbert's Late Show Monday viewership.

Fallon’s show needs to rebuild a little
Jimmy Fallon's ratings problems reminds me of this on-going discussion (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=398242) about the differences between sitcoms of the '70s and sitcoms of the '80s.
Jimmy Fallon reminds me (if I were to make an analogy) of the way that sitcoms were like earlier than that. What I mean is that sitcoms of the 1960s and '50s were mostly fantasy-esque and very rural and didn't like to address the turmoil (https://time.com/4147951/star-wars-1977-garth-risk-hallberg/) that was going on in the real world at the time (i.e. the fight for civil and women's rights, the Vietnam War (https://time.com/vault/issue/1977-08-08/page/1/), increased crime in big cities, the energy crisis (https://time.com/vault/issue/1977-04-25/page/1/) and economic crisis (https://time.com/vault/issue/1974-04-08/page/1/), etc.).
Simply put, Fallon's brand of escapism (https://www.theringer.com/tv/2018/2/12/17003528/watching-a-week-of-jimmy-fallon) during the Trump era (http://splitsider.com/2017/03/why-jimmy-fallons-escapism-doesnt-work-in-the-trump-era/) and the Covid-19 crisis, doesn't work (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/7ga1bb/comment/dqi9quj/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) because he's not speaking on matters people were facing at the time. Most people I think don't want to support someone that is ignoring (https://www.themarysue.com/jimmy-fallon-trump-crisis/) the elephant (https://www.thedailybeast.com/jimmy-fallon-youre-too-nice-a-guy-for-this-era-of-mean) in the room. He doesn't have the gravitas (https://www.vulture.com/article/jimmy-fallon-should-wear-glasses.html) anyway and to host (https://decider.com/2018/09/12/jimmy-fallon-doesnt-get-it/?utm_source=quora&utm_medium=referral) a late night show, you need more of an edge.

I think it might be time to replace Jimmy.
I think it might be time to replace Jimmy.
Jimmy Fallon even back in his SNL days, just strikes me as a guy who tries way too hard for to get people to like him. I suspect that this is why people feel that he comes across as disingenuous (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=411245). His friendliness and enthusiasm just comes across as another performance instead of being natural or genuine. On The Tonight Show in particular, everybody is his "buddy" and their latest projects are literally the greatest thing since slice bread. And don't get me started on Fallon cackling at just about any and everything his guests say every other minute.
