I also like "When We're Singing" much better. I really like how most of it is David's voice alone. I like when he sings "Danny got Ruben to sell our song and it really came together when mom sang along..." Something like that.

Thank you. As someone new to the Partridge Family (how could that have happened?) I would not have noticed the lyric change for a while. Now I can look for it once my DVDs get here.

I think "When We're Singing" was appropriate for the show's first season, but maybe the felt the need to change it because they thought the audience was already familiar with the story by now?

They had to make some sort of change for the second season anyway when they had the new Chris.

There were actually three different openings - "When We're Singing" in season one, "C'mon Get Happy" for seasons two, three and four - but for season four some of the visuals were slightly different - Keith and Danny anyway. On reruns I'm seeing these days, they've plastered the season four opening over two and three as well. I hate it when they do things like that!
