BTW: I didn’t watch any of today’s episodes and never payed attention to the information about David living in the same building so this is a surprise to me like it was to you as well.

I think because its a fresh new classic sitcom from the 70's that I am not used to seeing. Just wish it came on at 7pm instead of 3pm. yeah I was like......."Wait david lived upstairs?:lol:

I just binge-watched the first season on DVD, and I also wasn't aware he lived in the building until that episode. Maybe he didn't originally live there, but the writers figured for this particular plot, it would work best if David lived in the building. And from that episode on (until he leaves in season two), he's a neighbor of Ann and the girls.
