Here's why Brie Larson replaced Portia Doubleday on United States Of Tara. Writer Diablo Cody had a major breakthrough with her first screenplay Juno, with the resulting movie being praised for its performances and Cody's catchy dialogue. Unfortunately, a backlash to the praise that greeted Juno led to harsher reviews for her follow-up movie Jennifer's Body, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfriend. While it didn't do great business upon release in 2009, the movie has since been reassessed as something of a horror gem.
In 2009 Diablo Cody also created the comedy-drama United States Of Tara for Showtime. The original concept actually came from Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw and United States Of Tara cast Toni Collette as the title character. Tara is a wife and mother coping with dissociative identity disorder, and when stressed she often turns into one of her many alter egos, including sassy teenager T or Vietnam veteran Buck. While the show is funny it never makes fun of Tara's condition or its effects on her life, and the series was praised for its handling of DID from those with the condition.
When United States Of Tara debuted in 2009 actress Brie Larson was best known for movies like Sleepover, with the show casting her as Tara's teen daughter Kate. The series was one of Larson's biggest roles to date, with Kate being a somewhat typical rebellious teenager who is never the less supportive of her mother and her condition. Larson actually joined the show following the original pilot, where Portia Doubleday (Mr. Robot) played Kate.
Portia Doubleday would look back on her time on United States Of Tara with some regret in a 2010 interview with the Toronto Star. The actress stated "I was in love with the character I played, but they were looking for a darker take on it... " and that the showrunners explained that while she did a good job, her performance wasn't what they were looking for. The show ultimately ran for 3 seasons, but sadly, United States Of Tara season 4 was cancelled before a proper ending to Tara's story was shot.
While fans would love a United States Of Tara revival, it's not currently looking likely. While working on the series Brie Larson appeared in Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and soon moved on to other movies like 21 Jump Street. The actress is now best known as the titular superhero in Captain Marvel, with her next movie set to be a sequel directed by Nia DaCosta.
