Had Ted Knight not succumbed to cancer in the summer of 1986, how many more seasons do you think that we could've gotten out of what was now, The Ted Knight Show? I'm assuming that The Ted Knight Show was originally thought of as being a separate show from Too Close for Comfort. You know, kind of like how The Connors is technically, supposed to be a separate show from Roseanne or Archie Bunker's Place is meant to be separate from All in the Family.

I say this because, when Too Close for Comfort moved over from ABC to first-run syndication, it was produced with the aid (https://www.google.com/search?q=metromedia+too+close+for+comfort&sxsrf=AB5stBjerR0aqmgqj_OnG3OpHKO6IsragQ%3A1689918619515&ei=mxy6ZLGFH5Wm1QGpuKG4DA&ved=0ahUKEwjxvo-4jZ-AAxUVUzUKHSlcCMcQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=metromedia+too+close+for+comfort&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiIG1ldHJvbWVkaWEgdG9vIGNsb3NlIGZvciBjb21mb3J0MgUQIRigATIFECEYqwJI_xxQoQJYsxRwAHgCkAEBmAG3CKAB3heqAQszLTEuMS4yLjAuMbgBA8gBAPgBAcICBBAAGEfiAwQYACBBiAYBkAYI&sclient=gws-wiz-serp) of Metromedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metromedia). In fact, if you ever look at the closing credits and it says at the very end in yellow text "A D.L. Taffner Production In Association with Metromedia Producers Corporation", that's a clear indicator that you're watching a show from the first-run syndicated period (1984-87).

It was around this time that Rupert Murdoch bought (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6154874&postcount=9) Metromedia's stations to help set up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W0EVUbEtYA&lc=Ugwj5ysUN696BSJ9Fz54AaABAg) the Fox network. What would this have meant for a straight to syndication show like Too Close for Comfort/The Ted Knight Show, since there now would've naturally have been fewer timeslots with Fox producing their own?

I went back and looked at the Season 6 episodes on Tubi. I'm guessing that they're organized in production order instead of the original broadcast order (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Too_Close_for_Comfort_episodes#Season_6_(1986%E2%80%9387)). For example, the final episode to be aired was "Lisa Goes Lottery Loco" (which was originally broadcast on February 7, 1987). But on Tubi, it's listed as the 15th episode out of the 22 from that season.

"Presenting Buddy Ficus", which was the 21st episode to be broadcast (on January 31, 1987) but is listed as the 19th episode on Tubi, was the first one on Tubi to end with the credit "A D.L. Taffner Production In Association with The FOX TELEVISION STATIONS, INC." It was also at that point, listed in the credits that it was video taped at Fox Television Center (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metromedia_Square#Later_incarnation), Hollywood, whereas earlier in the season, "Facilities by METROTAPE (https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Broadcast-Week/Broadcast-Week-1983-08-08.pdf)" was listed in the closing credits.

Rupert Murdoch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IgwfnUG3cM) officially (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1985-05-07-8501280213-story.html) purchased (https://www.nytimes.com/1985/05/07/business/murdoch-to-buy-tv-stations-cost-2-billion.html) Metromedia (https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1985/05/07/metromedia-murdoch-agree-on-tv-sale/986bb70c-fe15-4dd5-8750-6a6d1ca7a0d1/) on (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-05-07-fi-11301-story.html) May 7, 1985, which would've been three days after the Season 5 episode of Too Close for Comfort, "And Baby Makes Two" was originally broadcast. And the Fox network or Fox Broadcasting Company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Broadcasting_Company#Beginning_of_the_network) as it was initially known, launched on October 9, 1986, which would've been two days prior to the "Cyrano Henry" episode being first broadcast. It was around October 1985, when it was first announced (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-10-10-fi-15530-story.html) that Rupert Murdoch would be consolidating the six (https://www.csmonitor.com/1985/0509/ametro-f.html) Metromedia stations that he purchased under the Fox (http://thelamp.org/gaslight-media-in-october-1985/) name.

Just a guess on my part but I think they could've gotten another 2-3 seasons out of The Ted Knight show if he hadn't passed in '86. "It's a Living" ran until 1989 so that might be a fair comparison. As mentioned Fox was beginning to air their own shows by the late 80's so the available timeslots on many stations would've been shrinking around that point.

"Mama's Family" always had very good ratings and it's last show aired in February, 1990.
