I think they should have kept PRINCESS ALEXANDRA during the later seasons rather than introduce us URCHIN ANDY, and for the following reasons: she was a mixture of both JO/BLAIR (a rebellious princess with an air of punk, who didn't mind breaking curfews and saying 'Ciao!').
She would have hang out with NAT & TOOTIE (being closer to their age) and use JO & BLAIR as a role model/mentor.
Of course in my ideal world, MRS G would have never left for Africa, and she could have nurture and added PRINCESS ALEXANDRA as one of her new girls....
Besides, it was always meant to be a girl show and URCHIN ANDY had no business in FOL lol!!!!!

What do you guys think?

They needed younger blood and someone to who tweens would go gaga over. Boots would have been a better choice than Princess Alexandra.

I don't think Boots was younger than Alexandra.

I don't believe Andy was ever a major draw for the show. I don't remember anyone watching FOL because they were Andy fans. If you wanted to watch a 12-year-old blond kid in 1985, you were watching Silver Spoons.

The producers could have thought that bringing on Andy could draw younger fans as even Tootie was almost an adult at this point. It certainly looked like they wanted to change things up by bringing in male characters instead of female. First it was Andy and then George.

I do think they were trying to bring in a male audience by introducing both Andy and George. But if so, those efforts must be viewed as largely unsuccessful: there was no gain in audience (actually, in general a loss of about three million viewers per episode between Seasons 2/3 and 6/7), and the role of George was reduced to just guest spots by Season 8.

You make a great point 80s!

BOOTSIE would have been perfect too, and she was my second choice: with her spoiled behaviour she wouldn't have gotten a chance to continue misbehaving, and MRS G could have straightened her (the way she did with BLAIR), JO could have taught her a thing or two, and BLAIR could have softened as well; the 3 of them could have hung out in campus, she'd eventually learn how to help in the kitchen and stopped being manipulative to the younger NAT+ TOOTIE.....

Great choice! I like it 80s!

That was me. I was watching Ricky and Jason getting into trouble on SS and I didn't watch FOL for Andy.

Silver Spoons was cool.

FOL and SS even used the same interstitial music for a while, which drives me crazy (every show should have its own music. Imagine another show using the stingers from Friends or Saved By the Bell... it'd be crazy.)

No. Definitely not Alexandra. She was too much like Blair so it wouldn't have worked. What they should have done was kept the show about the core 4 and not added Andy in. I didn't mind Kevin or George being added because realistically women have male friends that are their age or around their age. That made sense to me. But Andy didn't fit the show and I don't understand why they went the younger brother act for the core four in those later years. That's how he was portrayed to the girls, a younger brother who is a pest sometimes.

If they had to add anyone, I think it should have been one of the lost girls out of respect for their fanbase. Except Molly. Anyone but her because she is the worst actress on this show. I recently watched season 4 of Riverdale out of boredom and she's pretty dry on that show too. I do respect her for doing the show to fill the void of Luke Perry's death. That was nice of her. But I still don't care for her acting.

Alexandra was too much of a Blair clone, I agree. I can also see how having male friends is important.

I haven't seen Riverdale, but I hope to give a few episodes a try in the near future.

Out of curiosity, if one of the Lost Girls would have returned, which one do you think it should it have been?

Seasons 1 and 2 are pretty good. Season 3 is ok. Season 4 was eh. Now that the parents are leaving the show and they're doing a time jump for season 5, I don't think I'll be sticking with it. Riverdale is a show I watch the previous season at once during the summer. It's not something for me where I can watch weekly and stick with it. But they're getting rid of important characters that were one of the reasons I watched for. If you like Luke Perry, Skeet Ulrich, and Madchen Amick they have some great scenes in the first 3 years.

Cindy. I've always thought Cindy should have been kept around especially after seeing she had the most character development in The Little Chill. Nancy was always the same about Roger. Sue Ann was still the same about needing to be better than everyone. So Cindy should have been considered since the writers had ideas for making her grow being completely different than when we last saw her.

I appreciate the honest review, and I know you have good taste in dramas.

I can definitely see the potential with Cindy, especially because the character develops and changes considerably between seasons 3 and 8. The tomboy blossomed into a beautiful model, and seeing how that developed could have been really nice. I also felt like Julie Anne was a good actress who had that "wistful, willowy quality" Eve Brandstein mentions, and we see that wistfulness in "Rough Housing".

I think that wistful, willowy quality was Julie Anne's real life personality if that documentary on child actors was any indication. That was like we were seeing Cindy in that.

I agree. She seemed that way in real life, based on the documentary.

Yep i like the idea of a 'Lost girl' returning too: CINDY would have been a good choice indeed!

I don't know why PRINCESS ALEXANDRA popped into my mind, it was just a thought though....

There wasn't much to Alexandra's character. We know she had a bad-boy boyfriend, that her parents neglected her, and that she was European royalty. In a later episode, we learn she's a terrible cook.

If Alexandra would have worked, the writers would have needed to flesh out her character... a lot. She couldn't just be a Blair clone without the heart of gold. That never would have worked. It would have been like getting Julia Duffy for Designing Women, and then failing to create a lovable character for her.

As I pushed play on the DVR, I looked this episode up on IMDb. I saw the episode image and immediately thought “she looks like Kat from Sisters”. I watched that drama in high school and now I am on the hunt to find it. Now I wonder if I watched Sisters because I had a crush on George when he was on the Facts of Life...

I never watched Sisters, but it's always cool to catch an actor you know well on one series in another series.

The girl who played PRINCESS ALEXANDRA was also one of the girls in the series 'Rags to riches' (although she was only on the 'pilot' lol!)

I remember that! And then she got... Laura-ed/Jennifer-ed/Leon-ed. But they did at least mention her.

...Apparently, there were "too many girls".

A few episodes prior to that, “the Sadie Hawkins dance”, the guy who Natalie had a crush on was played by Brian Robbins from Head of The Class. That episode was pretty cool to watch and think “he’s going to be the President of Nickelodeon in less than 40 years.
