The Slow Child S3E15

So many things not right in the episode

where to start ?

Amy's mom giving her a picture book !

Squiggy calling her a ******** dummy !

Odd we never heard of her before or after this ? (right ?)

Someone needed to rewrite this before the filming ?

It had it's touching moments but still Needs Improvement !

The Slow Child is actually one of my favorite episodes of the series. Back in those days people did say ********, but in this day and age it's pretty much taboo now. It's considered inappropriate.
I would have liked to have seen Amy again but unfortunately they never brought her back on the show.

I believe Shirley also called Amy the "R" word as well, but I am not sure if this broadcast on MeTV earlier today stripped it out - I did miss the episode earlier today.

Yes, Shirley did say the R word too ! I saw this ep.for the first time today on ME ! Weird I had never seen it before ! It was a good ep.but kind of unusual for L & S ! Kind of dramatic ! I thought Amy and Lenny made a really cute couple ! :)

Actually, "Slow Child" was one of the show's most respected episodes due to the sensitivity that it showed towards the subject matter.

Squiggy referred to Amy as a "dummy", which was a slur at the time the show was set in, and at the time it was filmed. However, the word "********" was a medical term used in the 50s-70s before it became known as an insult.

I think the word "********" was appropriate for the time period. Had the show been produced today and in a modern setting, they would have used "developmentally challenged" or "developmentally delayed", or something more specific.

At no point in the show was Amy made fun of or mocked with the glaring exception of her interaction with Squiggy, who was really not known for political correctness.

Like most TV episodes discussing people with special needs, the terminology used in this episode didn't date well. This is because legitimate medical terminology eventually becomes co-opted by bullies to deride people the bullies don't like. This means that totally appropriate words used to describe the disability begin to feel insulting, and eventually have to be replaced by new, politically correct terms. This is a never-ending cycle.

It's a sweet episode, and having episodes showing people with both physical and mental disabilities is important, but they just don't date well because of the co-opting of medical terminology for the purpose of insulting someone.

Since Edna Babish (later DeFazio) was a regular who'd have constant interaction with the whole L&S crew until her abrupt parting ways with Frank, it was awkward to have this entire episode about her daughter she had never before- and never would again so much as mention during the rest of the time on the show. It would have worked better had Amy been the daughter of a one-shot character that the regulars were supposed to be know but the audience themselves had never seen before (and that would be true had Amy not been challenged but since she was that made the issue of her mother never before/never since mentioning her nor any dialogue mentioning what became of her even more uncomfortable!)

I suspect that after the original airing of this episode, there may not have been too many shows after this one that did use the R word uncensored, as I think by this point, the R word was bordering on unacceptable, with my guess that the word became unacceptable by the turn of the decade.

Probably stayed in an institution for challenged folks before eventually going to a group home (when they first started being developed). She did NOT attend Edna's wedding to Frank or ever visit her mother again in Milwaukee or LA- and if Edna or Lenny kept in touch with her, they sure kept it quiet!

See, that's why it was a bad idea for Amy to have been a series regular's offspring instead of a one-shot character's. IOW, because of that, once her existence got revealed,it was natural for folks to wonder why there were no further appearances or mentions of her instead of her instantly being sent to the Chuck Cunningham Zone!
