View Full Version : Did Drew Barrymore have too much creative control on the 2000 movie
Maybe to its overall detriment? I thought about this a little after seeing her interview Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hqHttMQykg) on her talk show. She (https://www.tribute.ca/magazines/tribute/1100/cover_story2.html) said that she (https://books.google.com/books?id=YSRTvYgS8AwC&pg=PA117&lpg=PA117&dq=promiscuity+charlie%27s+angels+2000&source=bl&ots=6XRo4FHJAA&sig=ACfU3U2vzy0aTJJ0--kJITv_P3aQ6DvTBA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjPyLb2_M_uAhWLZM0KHZQJDgoQ6AEwHnoECBEQAg#v=onepage&q=promiscuity%20charlie's%20angels%202000&f=false) created a reel (https://www.fivexfivemedia.com/film-and-tv/charlies-angels-20th-anniversary) that she showed to the hire ups at Sony Pictures, when they were planning (https://ew.com/article/2000/06/19/charlies-angels-producers-bring-film-21st-century/) on making (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:mgewtOEm3FYJ:https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2000-11-11-0011110080-story.html+&cd=36&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us) a Charlie's Angels (https://screenrant.com/charlies-angels-movie-behind-scenes-details-making-trivia/) movie (https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/charlies-angels-cameron-diaz-drew-barrymore-lucy-liu-mcg-reboot-a9214026.html). Among them was Enter the Dragon, starring Bruce Lee, as well as Used Cars, Foul Play, and The Great Escape.

As actress-producer, Barrymore became an influential decision (https://dailybruin.com/2000/11/01/heaven-sent)-maker on the set. She picked August, lobbied for first-time director McG, best known for his GAP Country TV ads, and wooed key cast members, including co-Angel Cameron Diaz. However, Barrymore and Juvonen had no experience doing a big-budget project, and by the fall of 1999 the movie was floundering, beset by production delays. Lucy Liu wasn’t hired until late November. The script’s third act still didn’t play.
I'm not going to do a full blown (https://exclaim.ca/film/article/charlies_angels-mcg) review (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5674638&postcount=2) of the movie or its (https://buffalonews.com/news/heavenly-angels-its-easy-to-love-drew-barrymore-and-crew-as-they-do-their-cloudland/article_c4072d82-c24a-51c1-b1bb-98650de7c194.html) sequel (https://battleroyalewithcheese.com/2009/08/guilty-pleasures-charlies-angels/), so I'll just leave this links below in the mean time:

Everything Wrong with Charlie's Angels (2000) in Butt-Kicking Minutes or Less (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=387027)
Charlie's Angels are in essence, law enforcement (https://investigativeacademy.com/understanding-how-private-investigators-differ-from-other-law-enforcement/#:~:text=In%20reality%2C%20however%2C%20private%20investigators,may%20not%20be%20bound%20by.&text=Additionally%2C%20laws%20and%20regulations%20vary%20by%20state.) officers, aren't they? At least on the original series, we're told that they worked for the police force before Charlie Townsend hired them. They aren't exactly superheroes (https://www.tribute.ca/magazines/tribute/1100/cover_story2.html) as seemingly depicted (https://moviechat.org/tt0160127/Charlies-Angels/5cb02e69fb9ab945f9a24eed/Was-Drew-Barrymore-trying-to-go-back-to-playing-more-edgy-roles) in the (http://www.hollywoodjesus.com/charlies_angels.htm) movies.
To me, the aversion (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-may-28-ca-3444-story.html) to the Angels using firearms (https://www.quora.com/Are-people-who-use-guns-cowards-as-Drew-Barrymore-stated-during-the-making-of-the-first-Charlies-Angels-movie-from-2000?q=guns%20are%20cowards%20drew%20barr) unlike (https://web.archive.org/web/20010127165700/http://www.eonline.com/Features/Features/Charliesangels/Qa/interview2.html) on the original series strikes me a bit of Drew Barrymore (http://www.wagc.com/drew-barrymores-revisionist-history/) being reactionary (https://web.archive.org/web/20010913020448/https://time.com/time/asia/magazine/2000/1127/c.angels.html) because at it wasn't that long prior that the Columbine massacre (https://web.archive.org/web/20021223142311/https://www.eiconline.org/creative/profile/profile47.html) happened (https://web.archive.org/web/20021229135659/http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/10/02/entertainment/main237780.shtml). And at the time, there was a lot of debate over the influence of violence in the media directed towards young people. It sort of reminds me of when Jim Carrey tried to distance himself from Kick A** 2 in light of the Sandy Hook massacre.
To better clarify the point that I was trying to get across, Drew Barrymore (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqs1RSYJ26A) heard Sony was planning a reboot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zkB7XrIhQA) and offered them her concept. They basically give her the rein and as well as be one of the producers. She was basically one of the film's biggest influences as she was the one to also pick its director, chose to not have the girls use guns in the movie (opting for martial arts), and approved the scripts offered by a dozen or so screenwriters.

Also, during production of the first movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVrIrxJH-OE), Drew Barrymore was a huge Harry Potter fan and she would bring the books on set to read. There’s even a Harry Potter reference one the film during a different disguised montage scene. And this was all before the first movie even came out.
Drew Barrymore's argument (https://www.quora.com/Are-people-who-use-guns-cowards-as-Drew-Barrymore-stated-during-the-making-of-the-first-Charlies-Angels-movie-from-2000?q=guns%20cowardly%20drew%20) that the Angels shouldn't use firearms in her films is in itself, extremely daft and naïve. The whole point of the show to begin with was that Sabrina/Jill/Kelly/Kris were ex-cops turned private investigators. So being adept with firearms comes hand-in-hand (https://www.quora.com/How-much-more-efficient-would-hand-to-hand-combat-be-when-compared-to-using-firearms) with their past line of work. They aren't exactly MacGyver. Plus, I don't know where Drew got the idea that the Angels should be "Crouching Tiger"-like kung-fu masters.
Charlie's Angels (2000) – How the Drew Barrymore-produced Reboot Brought the Beloved Series Back
TojmRT-qAdc
Charlie's Angels, the 2000 Drew Barrymore-produced reboot of the 1970's TV series, brought back the escapist fun of the series, but with big budget spectacle, including elaborate wirework fight scenes. Film experts Cam Maitland, Alicia Fletcher and Brendan Ross discuss what they love (and don't) about this unusual early-2000s action movie.
