Fox is adding another music-centric game show to its lineup, and this one is a revival of a classic.

The broadcast network has ordered an updated version of “Name That Tune,” which will be hosted by Tony-winning actress Jane Krakowski with Grammy Award winner and former “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson serving as band leader.

Based on the original series created by Harry Salter, the “Name That Tune” revival will test contestants’ music knowledge as they battle it out in an assortment of challenging games for cash and prizes. The new series will premiere Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 9/8c, immediately after the time-period premiere of “The Masked Singer” spinoff series “The Masked Dancer.”

“We’re thrilled to bring the iconic musical game show ‘Name That Tune’ back to television with this updated revival. It’s been beloved the world over for decades and we can’t wait for a new generation of families to get to play along with the classic series at home,” Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment & specials at Fox Entertainment, said. “With the captivating Jane Krakowski as host alongside band leader Randy Jackson the Big Dawg himself, this surely will be a harmonious pairing.”

“Name That Tune” hails from Fox Alternative Entertainment, Prestige Entertainment and Eureka Productions (“Holey Moley,” “Dating Around,” “Full Bloom”). Chris Culvenor and Paul Franklin will serve as executive producers for Eureka Productions. Ralph Rubenstein and Noah Rubenstein are also executive producers, along with Janine Cooper, who also serves as showrunner.

The original “Name That Tune,” created by orchestra conductor Salter, premiered on NBC Radio in 1952 and was adapted for the NBC broadcast network in 1953. “Name That Tune” later moved to CBS and eventually aired as a syndicated series.

I hope the producers of the Name That Tune revival keep some elements of the 70s version that made the show a success in syndication such as Bid-a-Note and Melody Roulette as well as The Golden Medley. I'm looking forward to the new version of the classic music game which hasn't been on broadcast TV since Jim Lange hosted the 1985-86 syndicated version.

I have wanted to see the original versions of Name That Tune, but that will probably never happen because of music rights. The current version will likely have a bunch of hip hop and rap crap, it is really a shame those hideous styles of "music" have become so popular.

I don't have an opinion about the host, but Randy Jackson as the bandleader kind of dampens my anticipation for this revival. He's certainly more than qualified to take the baton, and he's got that vapid but enthusiastic personality that I suppose helped Vanna White become popular (though without her looks), but I've heard more than enough of his maddeningly inconsistent opinions on Idol to last a lifetime. Plus him giving tells about who The Powers That Be want to win sort of ruins the suspense of the show...

I doubt there will be much rap, but I could see some hip-hop songs make the show. That's fine with me ... it'll just be another category I'll have difficulty with (like country western, classical, etc.).

I agree with you but being much older, a half century plus old, I'm assuming the show has to go for the younger crowd of music. Name that Tune wasn't a show I liked when I first saw it mid 1970?. Kathy Lee Gifford sang tunes on the show. The show has the same format as Meredith Veiras 25 words of less, another show I have stayed away from.

I doubt that'll happen. I'm sure they'll have a variety of songs from different styles/categories.

Fox's Name That Tune revival was able to have a live studio audience by filming in Australia (https://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/2021/02/name-that-tune-fox-behind-scenes-interview/)

Unlike The Masked Singer, which uses an artificial audience, the Name That Tune game show revival starring Jane Krakowski and Randy Jackson was able to film in front of a live audience of 300 people by producing the show in Australia at the Sydney Convention Centre in November and December, according to Reality Blurred. While coronavirus restrictions are more relaxed Down Under, Name That Tune still had to follow safety precautions.

Did Jane Krakowski contract COVID while in Ireland filming Fox's Name That Tune? (https://www.buzzerblog.com/2021/10/25/foxs-name-that-tune-returns-for-second-season/)

NBC says Krakowski had to step down from NBC's Annie Live! because she is “experiencing a breakthrough Covid case while working on a separate project in Ireland (https://deadline.com/2021/11/megan-hilty-jane-krakowski-annie-live-covid-1234873310/) despite being double vaccinated, a regular testing process and abiding by protocols.” Buzzer Blog recently reported (https://www.buzzerblog.com/2021/10/25/foxs-name-that-tune-returns-for-second-season/) that the Krakowski-hosted Name That Tune has began filming Season 2 in Ireland after filming Season 1 in Australia.
