View Full Version : Mrs. Garrett and the girls after season 1

After the first season, the Cast Purge and the premiere of the retooled show, we clearly saw the personality change of Mrs. Garrett and the girls, thanks to the new writers. I wanted to talk to you about these changes.

Edna becomes more serious and calm, however she still has several funny moments.
Blair is more or less the same person, her snobbish side is more prominent than her rebellious side.
Tootie is the girl who has changed the most in my opinion. In season 1 she was very sassy and funny, starting with the second season she becomes much more whiny and immature sometimes (Who am I?, Gossip, Starstruck, Let's Party*, Crossing the Line). Fortunately, this childish attitude disappears after season 5.
Natalie is the only girl who hasn't changed, in my opinion.
The Lost Girls are certainly not the characters they were during the first year. They look more like "rivals" of the Core girls.
As for Jo, her "violent" attitude begins to change after a season or two.

*except the final scene

Let me know your thoughts!

Yes. I think "Gossip"'s Mrs. Garrett is the closest we see to Season 1 of FOL and Season 1 of DS's Mrs. Garrett: the sort of kooky housemother.

Blair is more or less the same person, her snobbish side is more prominent than her rebellious side

They mostly forgot Blair's artistic side, althout it shows up again in "Different Drummer" and "Green-Eyed Monster".

Tootie is the girl who has changed the most in my opinion. In season 1 she was very sassy and funny, starting with the second season she becomes much more whiny and immature sometimes (Who am I?, Gossip, Starstruck, Let's Party*, Crossing the Line).

It's true: remember the rapscallion who "wiped" the smirk off her face in "Like Mother, Like Daughter"?

Natalie is the only girl who hasn't changed, in my opinion.

It's true: Natalie stays true to her roots.

The Lost Girls are certainly not the characters they were during the first year. They look more like "rivals" of the Core girls.

Molly changes the most. S1 Molly would have stood up for Jo, even if she didn't know her. S2 Molly only offers up a weak "Lay off, Margo." And we don't see her protesting social injustices anymore.

Sue Ann continues to enjoy gossip, but it takes a harder tone. She doesn't hang around Blair anymore.

Cindy still seems to enjoy athletics, but she is mean to Mrs. Garrett and Natalie.

Nancy continues to date Roger, and is still interested in plays, but she doesn't appear to be acting anymore.

Blair became less "experimental and dressed more conservatively. I did see her in shorts in one episode in Season 2.

Natalie stayed the same, though she got Molly's activism part. Though not as convincing as Molly.

Tootie became more whiny as she took more of being the kid left out in many plots. She got Molly's hair cut and wardrobe.

Nancy O. is still madly in love with Roger and actually gets more airtime per episode she is in than she did in most season 1 episodes. She also is the only Lost Girl to visit the girls in their new digs.

Molly's heart was in it anymore, though she did get a feminist moment in the cafeteria line.

Sue Ann is more mean. Perhaps smoking that joint made her more jagged.

Cindy is still the jock, but is not as sweet as in Season 1.

Just curious: what is the S2 episode with Blair in shorts?

Good point about Natalie getting Molly's activism. It didn't show up too often, but it did appear from time to time.

Tootie became more whiny as she took more of being the kid left out in many plots. She got Molly's hair cut and wardrobe.

I'd forgotten the puppet clothing they saddled Tootie with. But it's true!

Good point! Although presumably, they still visit: Cindy invites Tootie to spend the night in Sue Ann and Cindy's dorm room in "Gossip", so they still seem fairly close at that point.

Molly's heart was in it anymore, though she did get a feminist moment in the cafeteria line.

Ah, yes! The galley slave "anti-woman" comment!

Sue Ann is more mean. Perhaps smoking that joint made her more jagged.

I do think Sue Ann can still be nice. At the very beginning of "Sex Symbol", she even spends a moment soothing Jo, who she must not even know all that well, even after licking envelopes with her and the others all day, a few weeks earlier.

Cindy is still the jock, but is not as sweet as in Season 1.

She definitely seems less innocent, with the innuendo. Yet she does still invite Tootie up to her room, so something must remain of their friendship.

I agree, Cindy and Sue Ann are still nice just edgier. But they weren’t really mean, just being judgey in Sex Symbol

I don't remember which specific episode I saw Blair in shorts in Season 2. I would have to rewatch the season again.

They (all three of them: Sue Ann, Cindy, and Nancy) never should have made those jokes about Natalie and Home Run Helen. I sure hope Mrs. Garrett gave them an off-screen talking to.

Nat did get in a nice dig about Nancy (the leeway comment), but it does feel as though her old roommates have turned on her.

I think MRS G and BLAIR are the ones that changed most drastically after the revamp!

In season 1, MRS G goes from being a warm and bubbly housemother who watches over 7 girls, guiding them and making sure they stay out of trouble, but also serving them as a confidante for 'heart to heart talk' when needed.

In season 2, by losing all that weight and becoming a nutritionist, gone is her bubbly and feisty personality, to be replaced by a more serious and calm person (although she still has her funny moments) who now watches over 4 girls and become a surrogate mother to them in a caring but stricter way at times, punishing them when necessary, but also nurturing them.

As for BLAIR: she goes from being a adventurous/fearless girl who enjoys breaking the rules by experimenting with older boys, to a becoming a snobbish princess who enjoys shopping more than anything (although i'm pleased to see that at least she remains true to her roots, by staying the 'girl with the golden heart', who would do anything for friendship!)

Also, by focusing the show more on JO, we don't get to see so much of the bondMRS G and BLAIR shared during season 1: after their ice breaker from the episode 'Rough housing', MRS G takes BLAIR under her wings and becomes a confidante/mother figure to her (a bond she would have to share with the 3 other girls afterwards).

TOOTIE goes from being a sassy/cheeky child, to the whiny teenager everyone seem to hate! (at least between season 3 and 4).

NATALIE on the other hand goes from being the shy/insecure kid, who turns into a man eater overnight!

JO is the new kid: soft on the inside but tough on the outside, who was brought up to the show to be a rival and foil to BLAIR!

As for the 'Lost girls':

NANCY is the only who remains true to her character: she is still crazy about invisible[B][I]Roger, and she sorts of have a rivalry friendship with BLAIR!

CINDY and SUE ANN are now the meangirls,

But worst of all is MOLLY: she is the first girl in the Eastland history to turn into a POD....

She definitely whines quite a bit.

Valentina, what do you mean by man eater?

Nancy just went up to Tootie's room and threatened to ram a globe down Tootie's throat.

Hello Retro: i'm very glad you agree on most of my point of view!

By 'man eater, i meant that NATALIE becomes 'men obsess' (even so more than BLAIR) and begins to throw herself in any guy that crosses her path lol!:grineyes::grineyes:

BLAIR on the other hand only flirts with them (like the tease we all know she is!):kiss::kiss:

And yes, you've got a point about NANCY: she didn't even TOOTIE in her room, but instead threatened her with a globe lol!:argue::argue::argue:

Nevertheless, i did not like the way CINDY and SUE ANN laughed behind MRS G's back (when they thought she was a drinker): during the whole season 1, she had been so caring or warm towards them to mock her that way!:smash::smash::smash:

You know, you raise a good point. And it's funny because Natalie is even obsessed with Steve during the first season.

Yeah, I'm just saying it's not fair to call Sue Ann and Cindy mean girls while Nancying away Nancy's role in the bullying. I mean, Nancy was just as much involved in the bullying of Home Run Helen and Natalie.

I'm sure MRS G lectured NANCY, SUE ANN and CINDY about HomeRunHelen (just as she did with BLAIR on the 'Rough Housing' episode):

"Girls, haven't you learned anything about appearances, and not judging people?"

And glaring at the pony tailed blond girl, MRS G continues: "especially you CINDY!"

Ha ha, i can just imagine their faces and how shameful the trio felt after our 'feisty red haired' had a word with them lol!
