View Full Version : New Replies Not Showing Up on Main Forum

I've noticed this happening a few times on the forum lately. Sometimes a new reply doesn't show up on the page and it looks as though no one else responded.

On the Complaint Forum I see that I am the most recent reply on the Main Board, but clicking on the thread shows that CoffeeCup responded after me a few days later. For some reason her name doesn't show on the main page.

I've seen this a couple of times as well, where I was the most recent poster on a thread, but the thread list shows the last post as someone else's earlier posting.

This has happened to me, too. I posted on the CBS General News and Discussion thread for 2020-21 on November 15, but the last reply listed was by MA, from November 10. I just don't know what could be causing this new bug.

And here's my post in the Gilligan's Island forum (Gilligan's Island A To Z Game #2 thread) that I believe was skipped over as the Most Recent post for a time (there were subsequent posts a week later): https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?p=5813053#post5813053

The only curious commonality between those posts that I can think of is that they both contain apostrophes.

I'm not sure what's causing that. It could just be a temporary glitch with too many connections at the time. James28, I just deleted your post and then restored it. It now displays as the last post.

Yes, I had this happen last night. I made a late post, and the next morning it still showed the previous poster on the 50s Forum. I had closed the Sitcoms application and it was this morning after I had reopened it, that it did not show up. I deleted and reposted it, which solved the problem.

This has been happening a decent amount it seems on different boards. I changed some of the settings to see if it will have any impact.

Cached Posts Lifespan
Number of days to maintain a cached copy of a post. This makes threads faster to display, but means that each post takes approximately twice the storage space.

I changed that from 7 to 0 days. It might have something to do with the posts being cached.

If you delete your post and re-post it, it usually shows up. There's no rhyme or reason for it to happen. It's not something that you can predict.

.

In times passed, I've had a situation where replies I have made to a particular thread, do appear as they are supposed to, but the header reporting "last post by...." continued to show the name of the poster immediately before me.

Then, earlier this week I had the exact opposite problem. A reply that I made did not show up in line, but the "last post by" header showed my name, despite the post itself being no where to be found. Even more strange, I waited about a half hour to see if the lost message would miraculously appear...and when it didn't I went ahead and reposted it, without incident.

Except about an hour later the missing post suddenly reappeared, immediately next to the replacement post I had made in the interim

Just a suggestion, but I'd look at whatever process allowed the server to report "last post by" accurately, when in fact the post itself was MIA. Sounds like a corrupt database problem to me.

Now the opposite is happening. A phantom post from Schmo at 8:23 isn't there. It shows up as the last post in 90s sitcoms under the Family Matters thread where Urkel is whining about never being invited to the Emmys. The last actual post there is from RetroGuy2000 at 4:50.

Schmo deleted their post, so that's why it wasn't showing up. I don't know if people editing their posts is causing the issue.

OK this is interesting. Today user OHNuts posted in this forum, "Generally" at 2:42.

https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?p=5889005#post5889005

His post would NOT show up for me. I tried several methods to search, and it gave no indication of having been deleted. But it just was not there!

I tried something--I had noticed an earlier reply of mine had duplicate-posted (this happens sometimes on quick replies which generate a VERY long delay before finally posting). I hadn't bothered to delete the duplicate when I originally saw it, but a few minutes ago I removed my duplicate "Central" post.

After I did that the OHNuts post appeared!

I think these duplicate posts sometimes must hose up the database. At least this time it appeared to have. It'd be nice to find out why this happens.

Also notice in this thread, in order to make OH Nuts 12:14 post appear, I had to delete one of my previous posts. As of now on the ELR site the post count shows 600 but the real count is 601.

The post count is off by one on the Word Conga thread referred to in the post above (#11), too.

I'm wondering if the database is getting too full and some stuff needs to be archived. Some strange things going on!

Those counts are all off. I guess that has nothing to do with this problem. I guess I never noticed before.

Actually I think the counts are right. I never thought about it, but the counter on the board shows as Replies. So the original post is not counted; therefore, the post number on the actual reply posts will always be one larger than the Replies count on the board.

That doesn't answer the problem of the disappearing posts mentioned above though.

There were some database errors last week for too many connections. It must have been bots or search engine spiders. Our host raised the number of connections. I've not seen any errors since Sunday night. It seems to be running a bit faster the last few days. I'm not sure if that was a factor with the last post column not updating all the time. Sometimes resources get tied up or it runs low on memory.

I'm not too concerned with the post counts being off as long as everything shows up in the threads. I don't know if the post counts are updated instantly after people delete posts. The views are updated on an hourly basis.

Now this glitch is happening again. When I go to the main Chit Chat page it shows MA as the last respondent in Dude's tell something surprising about yourself thread. But the last response once you open the thread is from Caroline.

I replied to Solomon's General Sitcoms thread about sitcoms cancelled in the top 20 at 9:56AM. That post is missing in his thread, but it shows me as the last respondent at that time on the General Sitcoms board, still shows up as a new post. I did not delete that post either.

Your post was the first on the second page. It seems more likely to happen at the start of a page. It's not always creating a new page for some reason.

If your post doesn't immediately display after making it, it could be fixed by posting a second reply and then deleting it. I did a test post and deleted it, so your post is there now.
