has. However he/she doesn't send the dvds you agree on, he ignores messages and in my case is holding my dvds until I give more than what was agreed upon in the original trade. Other traders have had bad experiences too but I can't speak for them.

Scammed as well. He proved his legitimacy by offering up, in hindsight, easily researchable knowledge of the show I wanted. Created fake images of the tapes. Very clever. I admit to falling for it. But he seems to have preyed on people looking for rare content. Don’t fall for it too.

I just wanted to chime in with my experiences with mtvofyesteryear.

I posted looking for episodes of a rather rare TV show that no one has posted full episodes of anywhere, and is considered lost media, except for a youtube posting of the opening of the show. mtvofyesteryear immediately responded that he had 16 episodes.

This had me already on alert - an immediate response of a bunch of episodes of a show that has been long lost and others are looking for. So I was quite suspicious when he wanted me to send money via venmo for the purchase.

This immediately had me trying to find a way to prove whether or not this was legit. I suggested going with paypal - I was met with resistance. However....that's not exactly unheard of around here, I have had an experience here where a trader/seller would only deal with payment methods that offer no recourse, due to paypal heavily favoring buyers. So I pressed on. I asked for samples - I was told he was offering to sell VHS tapes that were last tested a few years ago, and he no longer has a VCR to provide samples. I asked for pictures of the tapes to check the condition, he provided a picture of VHS tapes that wasn't from the internet - reverse image searching did not turn up a matching photo on another site. Comparing the photo with photos provided with others showed that he didn't use the same photo multiple times. While he was never able to prove he had what he was selling - he didn't leave a way to easily prove he was scamming. Always able to keep that little bit of doubt that maybe it's for real, and maybe it's worth the risk of sending the amount of money.

Not sure if that's how things are normally supposed to work around here - but it seems risky cash based transactions do happen through this site a lot, leaving this site easily vulnerable to someone to put in a little bit of effort and convince some people of taking the risk.

At this point - this thread was started, and I pointed it out to the seller. This gave me the leverage to insist venmo was out of the question, but that if he was for real, I'd be more than happy to use paypal, and cover the fees associated with that. He replied back offering to send the tapes first, let me test them, and then send the venmo transaction afterwards. Of course - no tapes ever arrived. I believe it was an attempt to gracefully exit the dialog, and prevent me from sharing my story while he tried to finish up whatever other transactions he had pending.

Anyways, that's my story. Just wanted to share the relevant details here to document the methods some may use, and let everyone know to be on alert. You can ask the right questions, you can take a chance, and sometimes it may work out. But, unfortunately, it is very easy for someone to come through here and convince people to take a chance and send a bit of cash with the promise of something rare, and walk away with easy free money.

If I receive any further communications, or if any tapes show up, I will update everyone here. But as of now, it looks like he has finished up whatever he was doing here, and has moved on. But be on alert - I don't think it would be that hard to register another username.

And for the legit traders/sellers here - please use paypal. Insisting on venmo or gift card transactions may protect you from invalid claims - but you do this site a disservice and set dangerous precedents that others can take advantage of.

I was scammed as well. I sent them $25 through Venmo for a vhs of the 1995 tv movie "Divas". They never sent it & never replied. This was on October 13, 2020.

I think my guy is the same as the guy YOU are talking about, only under a different alias! To me, he called himself "Travis (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/member.php?u=69799)" on here! I asked for a bunch of shows & movies, which he claimed he had. Like Forever Fernwood, All That Glitters, Highcliff Manor, the movie Clockwork Girl, etc. ALL of which he claimed he had + more! He wanted $, he wanted me to do Venmo, I offered Paypal, & I too, was met w/ resistance for Paypal. I then offered Amazon gift card, he agreed, & told me to send it to Joanahernandez620@icloud.com, I paid him $100 in that. He offered more stuff for an additional $50, which I paid. THEN he slams me w/ a message saying he can't use the gift cards to other stores & if I pay him Venmo $150, he would give me back $200 for the gift cards + the DVD's! SO I signed up for Venmo, he told me his name is Travis00 on Venmo. That didn't take. He then told me to try davidjones1981 on Venmo. THAT didn't work. Finally, he gave me the name Alex Lopez (alex2000xxox) & THAT worked. He thanked me & I never ever heard from him again!!!! I feel like such a sucker! I should have known red flags such as resisting paypal, accepting amazon ecards & charging more, then insisting on venmo, 3 alias's on Venmo!!! Needless to say I am working on getting my $ back from amazon, I don't know if I can get it back from Venmo! :(

I dealt with this guy too. He kept on asking more than what we agreed upon. That is when I drew the line. I told him either the original deal gets honored or NO DEAL. He said he had colorized versions of the Classic 39 of the Honeymooners that he taped from a Canadian TV station in like 1994. He did also in fact say that he DIDNT have the Incredible World of Ed Norton sketch from the Jackie Gleason Show that I am looking for.

I love colorized stuff. But I've never heard that the classic 39 were ever colorized other than by amateur's who posted on YT. I sure do wish the 39 were colorized though, I'd buy in a minute. What happened to "A2000fan"? I recently paid him $30 in Amazon card (which I found odd) for a show and have yet to receive it. He claimed to have had other stuff I was interested in, but went ghost this week after anxiously messaging me originally.

After reading all of these posts.. wow. I got played. Gut instinct was right off the bat, but got tempted with someone claiming to have all of a show that pretty much no one seems to have. Won't ever happen again to me. Anyone recoup their losses?

My advice would be to NEVER send cash-equivalents to a new user. Test the waters by trading an episode or two.

After I was suspicious about the $30 spent on Nick Freno (gut told me something was off with aggressive private message.. refusal to trade.. and insistent on amazon gift card), I tried to test him asking for screencaps on a few rare items. Said that was possible at first... but I was so specific of what I wanted screencaps of, I would be able to sniff out any BS. No response since.

Red flags. I knew better. But that show is impossible to find and I've had successful trades and purchases on the site before. I'm more pissed about his private message about rare pilots.. teasing with his BS. His e-mail response when I followed up days after paying him was shady AF. Talked about mailing me the show when it was agreed to be sent digitally.. then responding to my "what pilots do you have" question with "$50 for the pilots" without telling me at first which ones he had. yikes..

The tapes I used to have were Showtime, but they did have original credits and were the uncensored eps. 1983-1985. Lost in a move long before I had the ability to transfer to digital. I don't even recall seeing much of the last season in any syndication package - Crazy Neighbors, Cue Cards Hidden Inside Clothing, etc.

Oh, no. I couldn't put you through that. 150 episodes, say, at 1/2 hour each would lead to 75 hours of having to deal with tapes and discs. That is one helluva time investment for one person. I know, I've done professional transfers of everything from 2-inch Quad, U-Matic, Digi-Beta, Hi-8 (and digital-8), and even good ol' VHS, where you have to adjust the guide posts every few minutes and restart to keep the alignment.

I thought, maybe, you'd already had those in the digital domain. If you ever decide to tackle a project like that, or need a hand, look me up, though. I could help with the transfers.

I was PM’d by Rare_TV_Fan too and they asked me about a2000fan also. I didn't think much of it because they were looking for thing and not trying to sell.

So, I tried to set up a trade with this dirtbag in an attempt to get as much info about him as posssible. This did get me a couple names and addresses which I posted it also confirmed he is Nicholas. He was trying to sell me Sesame Street episodes from the 80’s and said he had hundreds of them. He wanted $100 for about 300 episodes and tried to get a Amazon digital gift card and then a digital Visa or MC. I told him I didn’t have a debit or credit card (a lie) therefore I could only mail him a money order or cash and he gave me the name and address in NY of Kendra Smith before later changing it to Martin Kimball in NY

I was busy for about a week and didn’t respond to him so he emailed me back and said if I was still interested he would lower the price to $50 again asking about a visa gift card almost as if our previous email exchange never happened. I said ok a minute later he emails back and says $100. (I am like what you just said $50 2 minutes ago). So I said $75 with no intentions of sending it too him. I told him I wasn’t comfortable sending money until I received the episodes. So he said he would send them to me digitally after I sent him the tracking #. The envelope of the $75 cash was gonna take 4 days to get there so he was gonna send all the episodes over the 3-4 days the cash was in the mail.

I get a $1 bill and wrap a bunch of fake looking bills inside of it to make it look like a wad of cash inside the wrapped up dollar bill. I taped it up with a **** load of clear tape so you can see the bills inside, but it would be a bitch to have to unwrap all the tape and he would because it looks like there is $75 inside (I really wanted to f@#$ with him) I write a note inside telling him to go f@#$ himself put it all in an envelope and mail it with a tracking #. I then email him the tracking # he almost immediately sends me a YouTube login and password so I can log in download the episodes myself. I log in and there is 5 episodes not 300. I email him back and say what’s up are you giving me the rest he replies with a yes and then I don’t hear from him for 3 days when his friend gets the mail.

This is where it takes an ugly turn. On top of the fact he is a scamming dirtbag he is also a racist bigot. After he sees he was duped he sends me an email calling me a racist slur. I email back calling him a racist among other things and I tell him to quit emailing me. He responds by calling me a homophobic slur. I again tell him off and ask him to quit emailing me. This was the last response I got from him.

Apparently he is 38 years old and lives with his parents. They screen his mail so he can’t have cash or anything sent to him that’s why he prefers digital gift cards or in my case had me send it to someone else.

I sent the parents an anonymous email. Telling them what’s going on informing them that it was fraud and if they didn’t stop it he would be reported. Let it be noted a week later he was still trying to scam me.

They run an autism non profit in San Francisco and appear to be loaded.

Did this guy also trade under the name Nat88? Cause some guy by that name on here did something very similar to me. He told me had all the episodes of the rare UPN sitcom "Second Time Around" on tape and since I couldn't find that show anywhere(not even on TV Vault)I fell for it. The guy asked me to send him 20 bucks via Western Union so I did(stupid me, I should've asked for pictures as proof first)but my tapes never arrived, then I checked on the guys profile and it was empty with all of his posts gone.

Did this guy also trade under the name Nat88? Cause some guy by that name on here did something very similar to me. He told me had all the episodes of the rare UPN sitcom "Second Time Around" on tape and since I couldn't find that show anywhere(not even on TV Vault)I fell for it. The guy asked me to send him 20 bucks via Western Union so I did(stupid me, I should've asked for pictures as proof first)but my tapes never arrived, then I checked on the guys profile and it was empty with all of his posts gone.

I agree. Unfortunately. If its a new user at all you should require them to send first if they are honest they will understand. When I first started I sent first.

Part of me wonders if this is who scammed me on here back in 2019. I had made the topic asking about Princesses (which thankfully has picked up and at last 5/8 episodes are found now) and someone emailed me under the name Mom Of3, email address ofm3846@gmail.com. Claimed to have all episodes and I asked for proof which they never fully gave.

I eventually got a pic of some VHS tapes on a table (https://imgur.com/a/ihNi5sv), and being stupid I took that as enough and got CashApp just to pay them $40. Took a bit to verify and in the meantime they pressured me, asking if I can send it the next day asap and then following up with another email saying "Only reason I ask is because I kind of need that money right now. " So they were in a rush to scam me.

After I paid they said this after a couple days or so:

Hey I feel really bad about this but my cash app account was hacked so I never got the money. But you can get your money back by requesting a refund. Please do this and if you still wanna do this deal we will have to do another method. Sorry

I told them I wasn't buying into it and was pretty sure they were a scammer, at which point they sent this and never responded ever again.

Sure I'll send you the tapes first as a way I'm saying I'm sorry and for the inconvenience of what that sneaky bitch did

Definitely learned a lesson not to just randomly trust people without definite proof.

That’s terrible. I just got into trading myself to try and build my own sitcom library and it’s unfortunate the scammers exist in such a niche specific hobby. Goes to show they are EVERYWHERE.

Check traders out in trading post or get a moderator to advise.

i have all 39 episodes in color. I dont have the other thing youre looking for tho. back in the early 90s a canadian channell in my area (i live in upatate NY) aired the series in color and i was lucky enough to record them all as it didnt air for long.i have the episodes on 10 different tapes.id be willing to sell you the tapes for $60. do you have venmo? If you do decide to sign up for venmo and send the 60 through there. my name on there is davidjones1981."

Me: "Do you have pictures of them?"

mtvyesteryear: "i can but the only thing is some arent labeled and the ones that are are labeled with the shows that were originally on them. But yeah ill get them ready and take a picture of them."

After talking with him presumably with how I am undecided, he replied with this:

mtv: "ill even make a deal with you. Just send $20 for now and after you recieve the tapes you can send the other $40. Sound good?"

Me: "Sure."

mtv: "since these are vhs tapes the shipping cost is gonna be a little more than i thought. Bur ill take $12 off the price. making it $48 inatead of $60. Can you send the remaining $28 and ill send the tapes right out to you with a tracking number?"

(This should have been a red flag but I didn't see it.)

Me: "Sure thanks."

(Later on.)

Mtv: "Hello?"

(Seriously, that is what he said.)

(After telling him of the trouble I am havign with venmo, he replied with this.)

Mtv: "Try sending it to a different account. Send it to this one Jayjay171 see if that works. It's a friends account."

(Later on, I sent the money.)

Mtv: "i just got the payment thanks. ill get right to work on your order. i noticed you were viewing the carroll spinney thread who died last year. Are you a fan of classic sesame street at all? i have several episodes posted private on my youtube channell i could give u access to."

(I said no thanks.)

Mtv: "i have them ready to ship but its gonna be a littlr more expensive than i thought. since theyre vhs. Can you send just $30 more and i promise ill mail them right away with a tracking number?"

Me: "I’m sorry. You originally said $60. I’m not paying any more. No more money. If my $48 is not enough, than I want my money back."

Mtv: "well im sorry but its just that this turned out to be more costly than i thought. I already have the tapes ready to go i just need $30 more please try to understand. i wont ask for anymore after this i promise."

Me: "Again, you originally said $60. Combined with the $48 and the $30 is $78. If what I paid wasn’t enough, than I want my only back. I repeat, if what I paid wasn’t enough, than I want my money back."

Mtv: "come on man dont be this way."

Me: "Either my money is enough or NO DEAL."

(That was the end of the deal.)
