It boggles my mind how James Evans was looked on as a great TV dad. He was emotional and psychically abusive to his children and verbally abusive to his wife. Frequently beat his children with a belt and berated his wife and children on a regular basis. Not a good father at all.

You need to put down the crack pipe and stop making sh*t up. James was a very good father compared to the other dead-beat, no show dads of the ghetto. James fiercely loved all of his kids and his wife. He also provided for them as best he could. James had his faults but overall, he was a very decent man, provider, husband and father.

OH Nuts!

Well he wasn’t perfect, that’s for sure. But he could have been worse....he was just angry and frustrated himself.

James was a child of the Great Depression and growing up in that era AND being black and then a Korean war vet was probably very tough and made him how he was.

Been thinking that perhaps James used to be like JJ with a strong artistic side that just got beaten out of him by the times; he always seemed VERY supportive of JJ's art and his other kid's interests.

Spankings with belts were common then. I was born in 1969. My friends and I were all spanked with belts. I thought he was respectful to his wife, but the women's movement was just taking shape in the early 70's and Husbands still ruled the house. You have to consider the times.

That's what I was going to say. James' bark was worse than his bite. The kids exhibited awe of him, but I think it was out of respect for what he MIGHT do, but never actually did.

The kids were beaten off-camera from time to time. They talked about it.

First of all it's a sitcom and no one was REALLY hit.

I do remember Michael making a few references to having a sore rear end. So these kids were represented as having been spanked. Kids are spanked every day.

But most of the time James's look was enough to do the job.

Come on TVFactFan, Michael, Thelma, and J.J. all did at least insinuate that James whooped them before now you can’t deny that. Does that mean he was a bad father, no.
