"Everybody Loves Raymond" Cast Sets First-Ever Benefit Reunion to Honor Peter Boyle

October 20, 2020

The cast of the classic CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" will reunite for the first time since the show ended in 2005 to honor their late costar Peter Boyle and raise money to battle the disease that ended his life.

Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton, Brad Garrett, Monica Horan and Raymond co-creator and Executive Producer Phil Rosenthal will participate in a 90-minute event that will include table readings of popular scenes from the series. (Costar Doris Roberts died in 2016.)

Set for this Friday, October 23, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT., the event will benefit the Peter Boyle Research Fund of The International Myeloma Foundation.

Boyle died in 2006 after a four-year battle with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. The Peter Boyle Research Fund has supported the IMF’s research programs since the fund’s inception in 2007.

For the 14th year, Loraine Alterman Boyle serves as Event Chair for the annual IMF Comedy Celebration honoring of her late husband. Since 2007, the annual event has featured more than 50 celebrity comedians and musical performers, raising $8 million.

Portions of the money raised also support the International Myeloma Foundation’s Black Swan Research Initiative, a collaborative global project aimed at developing the first definitive cure for myeloma.

Special guests and bonus content are promised for the event.

The reunion will be available to stream on IMF’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and website.

I actually wasn't planning to watch this, but I did see most of it when a video of the event popped up in an ad.

The cast performed 5 episodes: Bad Moon Rising from season 4, Meant To Be/Stefania Arrives/Let's Fix Robert from season 5, and Thought That Counts from season 7. Ray Romano, Brad Garrett, and Monica Horan all have some gray in their hair now, and Ray's sporting some facial hair. They all sounded mostly the same as during the show, though I think Patricia Heaton's voice is a little raspier now. Somehow Alex Meneses (Stefania) managed to look even hotter than when the show was in production.

The virtual table reads were a bit handcuffed in that the event didn't have any scenes with lines from Marie and Frank (or anyone else who's passed on), which is understandable but unfortunate, since that meant the funniest scene from Let's Fix Robert had to be skipped (Marie entertaining Robert's exes when he walks in). It was good to see the remaining cast members together again, though. We got to hear some of the dialogue that was cut from production or reruns, too, which helped fill in continuity questions in those episodes. For example, Meant to Be usually starts with Robert talking to Ray and Frank about which of his 3 women to choose, but the episode actually starts with Robert showing off a postcard from Stefania with lipstick on it (a kiss from Italy), with Ray noticing another smudge on it and figuring out that Robert kissed it/her back.
