Thought 2020 could not get any worse? Apple TV+ decided to play the part of a real life Scrooge and remove all the classic Peanut holiday specials from free network tv.

The streamer is also making the specials available for free for a limited time. Pumpkin will be streaming free from Oct. 30-Nov. 1, with Thanksgiving following from Nov. 25-27 and Christmas from Dec. 11-13.

This will effect families in rural areas who do not have access to internet outside of a smartphone. I hate to imagine families having to huddle around their smartphones to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas.

My best advice, is for all families and fans to find a copy of the DVD at a local thrift store for a couple of dollars and not play AppleTV+'s little greedy game.

I have A Charlie Brown Christmas on VHS, so my family and I can always watch it anytime we want at Christmas.

I was wondering when someone would post about the here. I’m just glad I own all the Peanuts specials on DVD or Blu Ray. This is just wrong of Apple. This has been a long tradition for many years and hopefully Apple will receive enough backlash that they will return to broadcast TV at some point. I also hate that all new specials and shows will be exclusive to Apple TV. I don’t want to subscribe to it and would like to have the option to buy them on DVD.

I, too was saddened when I heard this news. We are big Peanuts fans in my house & look forward to these specials every year. It just gives me 1 more reason to dislike streaming services.

Good grief.

I see what you did there! :rotflmao:

On a more serious note, this is why all of these companies are considered monopolies. There will come a time when you will have to pay for everything that used to be free and have no choice as to how and where and how to view your entertainment. And even then, they'll put limits on what you can and can't watch and for how long. This is what's happening in the music world, so I imagine that's what will happen here as well unless Congress does something about it.

Just one more way the rich corporate world has screwed over the poor people during a pandemic.

What a mess the whole system of television has become. Honestly we were a lot better off when there were just the three networks, a few local channels and PBS.

Why is this even happening?

ABC’s deal was up and Apple ponied up more money than ABC was willing to bid. It’s worth it for Apple TV. It’s likely a loss leader - it may not make money for them, but will get them attention in the marketplace.

Just wait until one of the NFL packages goes to streaming only. And it’s coming - just a matter of when.

I'm kind of surprised at the backlash but understand it. I thought EVERYBODY has gone to streaming devices. All you ever hear now is "Subscribe to Hulu","Subscribe to Amazon Prime" etc. and people do.

Face it, tradition means nothing anymore. Btw, how much does Apple TV cost?

That's not that much but I understand paying for something as opposed to free tv.

You can start a free trial for 7 days and then it’s $4.99 a month.

There are alternatives to just watching the specials on Apple TV+ or TV network. I see that Peanuts holiday specials on DVD or Blu-ray are getting somewhat pricier, aren't they? Nonetheless, it's great for repeat viewings at anytime. Well, streaming audiences will be tremendously affected. Makes me wonder whether portable DVD players are no longer as practical as smartphones nowadays. Well, this proves that regular, traditional, scheduled TV viewership is no longer practical nowadays, is it?

Exclusivity can be a detriment, but the specials were exclusive to one network and then to another. Furthermore, I don't know why I don't feel much sad or devastated about the move as you guys are. There are other non-Peanuts holiday specials or movies to watch, especially for younger demographics. I hope Peanuts can still attract newer audiences, can't it?

Speaking of streaming, I found out that the specials are not available on Amazon Prime Video. I also couldn't find them at any other site. I hate to see the specials becoming rare to find if they plan to discontinue selling them in physical formats.

The copy on YouTube wasn't uploaded officially, was it? It's also illegitimate, right?

Apple TV+ is doing something what NBC, CBS, ABC & FOX all never did this year because Free TV is not the same without The Charlie Brown Holiday Specials.

But it won't be on there for long, because of copyright infringement. In fact, you can bet your bottom dollar that now that Apple is milking the franchise, the channel that posted the special will be flagged and removed in no time.

By the way how many streaming companies are there now? 10? 20? Whatever the number is, it seems way too many. I never used one of them and so far have no desire to. I don't want the once simple act of TV viewing to become even more complicated than it is now.

Not one? If price is an issue, there are some great ones, like PlutoTV and Crackle. PlutoTV has entire stations dedicated to one TV show or franchise. For example, there's one that plays The Addams Family 24/7 and another that plays nothing but Bond films.

Not even one. I guess I don't want to work too hard just to watch TV. However maybe I'll look into those you mentioned. However I have zero interest in things like Netflix, Apple whatever and so on.

Pluto and Stirr are two of the better streaming services for classic tv fans and the price is right (free). Pluto is set up like basic cable and is really easy to navigate. You don't have to go thru the trouble of keying in shows with your remote. Basically, if you like AntennaTV, you will love Pluto TV.

I just checked put Pluto TV for a couple of minutes. It seems a little interesting. I take it though you have to watch it on a computer and not a TV.

You can watch it on a TV, but you would need a set top box like a Roku + cable that allows you to hook things wirelessly.

A Roku is not at all difficult to set up. It's just a little tedious when you first get one (you have to register it at the services you want to stream stuff). However, it's definitely worth your while having one IMO.

Some smart TVs already come with the apps preinstalled. So no special devices necessary.

The only reason why Apple TV got the chance to air the Peanuts holiday specials is they have become the king of Peanuts cartoons and specials starting with the debut of Snoopy In Space last year and now that Apple TV is also gonna have another Peanuts cartoon debut in 2021 they will officially become Peanuts king. The other reason why the Peanuts holiday specials will not air on TV is because the contract to air the Peanuts specials possibly expired and to show them on streaming apps is a cheaper thing to do. When you look at it CBS was the original home of the Peanuts holiday specials but then somehow ABC got smart and decided to air them. But you can still find them on DVD every year but Apple TV should at least offer the specials for free to new Apple TV subscribers for November and December as part of a holiday deal

I really don't know the details but somehow PBS has worked out a deal where they'll get to broadcast A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving this weekend and Merry Christmas Charlie Brown in December, check your local listings. The PBS station in my area is showing A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving this Sunday evening at 7:30/6:30 Central. I'm in the Central Time Zone so I'll be watching it at 6:30, this makes me very happy! :)
