Was Season 2 with Louise Lasser, the weakest? Not only because Lasser seemed like a weird replacement for Susan Sullivan but the show was inexplicably retitled Making a Living. This made the final line of the theme song really awkward ("We're maaaaaaakiiiiiiiiiiiiiing a living!").

I’ve seen very little of the Sheryl Lee Ralph episodes, so it’s not fair to rank those. Of the first three, season two is by far the weakest. Louise Lasser was a terrible choice for the show.

2-1-3-4-5-6. Even though she didn’t fit it well, there was something about Louise Lasser that I liked. She sort of reminded me of Diane Ladd from Alice who played Belle they both lasted only one season.

Another equation that I thought off was when Julia Duffy joined Designing Women as Delta Burke's replacement. What I mean is that like Louise Lasser was a relative "name" actress who was brought in as an ill-fitting sitcom replacement. I read that even Tony Thomas, on of the producers, didn't want Louise, but she was forced upon him by the network.
I don't know for sure if Diane Ladd didn't fit into Alice. I mean, she did after all, originate the Flo character in the Alice Doesn't Live Her Anymore movie. If you have to replace the breakout character of the sitcom, then why don't replace said character with her spiritual predecessor. While I don't have all of the exact details for why Diane Ladd was only on for a season, I wrote in the Alice message board that I suspected that Linda Lavin was insecure about her overshadowing her as the star.
