Ellen.

Lauren is dead to me.

Ellen of course. Lauren was ok, but the show was never the same after Tracy Pollan left.

Yep - agreed. The spark seemed to go out of the show after the Alex/Ellen relationship ended. That relationship added a new dimension to Alex’s character, and that was lost after Ellen was gone. The episode where they addressed the breakup was good, though - I remember Alex talking to his parents and still couldn’t believe she left him. “We really loved each other! Nobody knew me like she did.”

Lauren was cute but dull. Michael J Fox and Courteney Cox didn’t have much romantic chemistry. I remember being really surprised when Alex dumped Lauren toward the end of the series, though. I guess the producers realized they weren’t a great couple either and didn’t try to force a happy ending for them on the audience.

Who’s Martie?

Never mind though. Ellen wins, simply because of the Billy Vera and the Beaters song.

I think after the build-up of the Ellen/Alex relationship, the Lauren/Alex relationship just seemed a little forced or unconvincing in comparison. Ellen and Alex had, as you say, visible on-screen chemistry, and I, too, was glad they producers didn't force the Lauren/Alex relationship to continue.

As an original viewer, I was very relieved when Alex seemingly got back together with Ellen at the end of Season 5, with Ellen appearing once more, but it turned out that those episodes had been produced for Season 4, leaving viewers like me very confused until the Internet era.

I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned Daphne Zuniga (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:9ZrTb9UcEZUJ:https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1987-06-22-8702230739-story.html+&cd=29&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us) as Rachel Miller. She appeared in at least two episodes, so she had to make a reasonable impression, if she was going to be brought back.

Okay, though technically not a girlfriend, one popular potential love interest from the show was Michelle Meyrink (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001534/?ref_=tt_cl_t_7) who played a girl named Jane in "Don't Kiss Me, I'm Only the Messenger." And the reason she has become so popular, was because this was after Meyrink was in "Revenge of the Nerds," and judging by her bob haircut, obviously filmed during the making of "Real Genius."

Which leads me to the question, when was this episode shot?

Meyrink played that friend of Mallory's who Skippy had a crush on, even though she herself had a lovestruck obsession with Alex.
