View Full Version : What was the last truly good sitcom?
Crusinforabrusin2.5 09-29-2020, 08:42 AM I'd say either Frasier or Friends both of which left the air in 2004. Sure, you had some other sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother and Modern Family but I feel as if sitcoms have fallen off ever since Friends and Frasier left in 2004. Fans went crazy when Friends ended in 2004. Has a sitcom ever generated that kind of response since? Friends is the last truly good sitcom in my opinion.
RetroGuy2000 09-29-2020, 09:02 AM I loved Friends and The Big Bang Theory. I think Mom is great, and it's currently still airing.
Both Friends and Frasier ended in 2004. Since then the number of good sitcoms that have come along have been remarkably few. The number of great ones is even rarer. The only ones I would consider to be great are "Two and A Half Men", "The Big Bang Theory", and "Young Sheldon". Others like "Mom", "Modern Family", "Will and Grace", "How I Met Your Mother", and "The Conners" are good but not even close enough to achieve greatness! Most of the rest are simply terrible!
LUNCH 09-29-2020, 12:13 PM I'd say Cheers which went off the air around 1993. I consider it one of the last sitcoms that can truly be called a classic. Maybe the last one.
Heenan Fan 09-29-2020, 01:47 PM As far as the thread title implies, to me it's the first 5 seasons of Modern Family.
GentlemanJim 09-29-2020, 01:53 PM CNN is still pretty good for a laugh, if you ask me.
principehomura 09-29-2020, 02:58 PM I've never loved a new sitcom since Frasier and Friends ended, until Mom was released.
That filled a void!

Yeah! I spent several years without watching any sitcoms at all. Mom was the first one I felt comfortable with in years. LOVE it! (And hate the idea of Christy being gone).
TV Guy 09-29-2020, 05:38 PM The Middle. I thought it was very solid from beginning to end.
Plater of Everything 09-30-2020, 12:43 AM CNN is still pretty good for a laugh, if you ask me.
Excellent point, but it's not a sitcom.

What are your opinions on shows like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Roseanne, Friends , and Frasier? All good sitcoms that either ran during Cheers' run or shortly after
RetroGuy2000 09-30-2020, 09:17 AM The King of Queens also ran from 1998 to 2007, and that was very good, as well.
Bonniegirl 09-30-2020, 11:19 AM The King of Queens also ran from 1998 to 2007, and that was very good, as well.
King of Queens was good, Friends and Mike & Molly were good recent Sitcoms! ;):)
Merry24 09-30-2020, 11:25 AM I have always loved classic television, I thought I would never love any today shows but than came the middle with Patricia Heaton & Neil Flynn & Charlie McDermott & Eden Sher & Atticus Shaffer!
icecream 09-30-2020, 12:38 PM I have always loved classic television, I thought I would never love any today shows but than came the middle with Patricia Heaton & Neil Flynn & Charlie McDermott & Eden Sher & Atticus Shaffer! The Middle is by far the best US sitcom that has premiered since the 21st century started. Only 21st century sitcom that has been better is Corner Gas which comes from Canada. The snobbish critics though sure liked looking down on The Middle and gushing over its far inferior counterpart from the same year Modern Family.

Seinfeld is ok, but I could never get into it that much. Roseanne is ok but not for me. Friends, I don't like. I never watched Curb Your Enthusiam or Frasier and was never tempted to.
Right of wrong I tend to avoid almost any show made in the 21st century, even if they started before. I just find the past 20-25 years just a terrible era for television in general. A little aside that I did not mention earlier is the show Brooklyn Bridge because it is not exactly a sitcom. It also ended around 1993 I think after a couple year run. It is a very good show.

I never cared for Mike and Molly, but that's just me.
I did not originally watch Friends, when it started. The show was extremely hyped, at that time, and I couldn't imagine a show with that much hype could be any good. I was quite surprised when I tuned in and I was very wrong.
In Fall 1994, I was working at Waldenbooks (remember them?). The producers of the show had put out Friends calendars, but there were not nearly enough calendars for demand. Each store only got ONE box of calendars, and those calendars sold out the day the box came in. We had to tell so many people, "I'm so sorry, but we have no more Friends calendars." Every day, for months, the number one request was for Friends calendars. That was the same year we had both Home Improvement and JTT calendars, so I had to keep saying "...but we have these lovely Home Improvement calendars."
When someone found a few additional Friends calendars stuffed in the back of the stock room, a few select people's holiday wishes came true.
It wasn't until well after the start of the New Year that I first tuned in. I was quickly hooked. It was funny in a somewhat salacious way that I had never experienced from the wholesome family sitcoms of the 1990s.

It is a very good show.I highly recommend you give Frasier a chance, I think it is streaming for free on Peacock. If you get Cozi as one of your locals Frasier also airs in primetime there (last I knew anyway Frasier had a nice primetime block but I don't pay much attention to Cozi's schedule since it is not available for me). While it lasted into the 2000s, its fantastic seasons were all from the 90s, had six full seasons there. Cheers I like to an extent, but Frasier is a much better spin-off. And if you are basing not wanting to see Frasier on how he was portrayed in Cheers, his character was much smarter on Frasier. The core cast of 5 that was there the full run were all top notch at their roles. Frasier is one of the best shows ever made. Frasier is also the best overall sitcom from the 90s, and it had a one season head start on Friends (which I don't like either but it went the same distance into the 2000s) as well.

I never cared for Mike and Molly either. Melissa McCarthy's previous show Gilmore Girls is much better.
Mrgman 09-30-2020, 11:42 PM King of queens and Everybody loves Raymond

Schitt's Creek is also from Canada and it just swept the Emmys so you might want to add it as well.
icecream 10-02-2020, 10:01 AM I just can't get behind a show with that kind of language in the title. Yes I know it's a real town, but I still don't like seeing that word plastered everywhere with Creek's popularity. :(
OH Nuts! 10-03-2020, 08:42 AM Everybody Loves Raymond and WINGS
benjamoon 10-03-2020, 12:01 PM I think there's one "truly great" one on now - Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Also The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel if that counts although it's an hour-long
And several others that are quite good: Superstore, The Conners, The Goldbergs (although it's losing steam), American Housewife, Never Have I Ever
favoriteshow 10-03-2020, 11:30 PM I also like Superstore and The Connors. Superstore is more a niche though than the mainstream sitcoms, probably on the level of Community. I also enjoyed The Office (NBC) up until a year before Carell left the series, and I'm also a fan of King of Queens. One common point is they all have somewhat working class characters.
But, The Office is somewhat more mainstream than Superstore or Community, but certainly niche relative to Friends or Seinfeld.
dee2364 10-04-2020, 09:38 AM Third Rock from the Sun. It was consistently funny from beginning to end, had a stellar cast and ended on a perfect note.
merlinjones 10-06-2020, 12:43 PM Seinfeld (I love that it was human observational irreverent belly laugh humor - non socio-political, non-PC).
Impressions 10-06-2020, 08:38 PM The Conners is a good sitcom. Sure, it's no Roseanne, but it's a favorite.
RetroGuy2000 10-06-2020, 10:56 PM The Conners is a good sitcom. Sure, it's no Roseanne, but it's a favorite.
I considered adding it to my own list, but there is something missing from it. It doesn't give me the belly laughs that the original Roseanne series, or even Mom, does. That being said, I definitely look forward to its return on October 21st!
