On The Nanny, the 3 kid‘a mother died and Mr. Sheffield needed a nanny while he was busy producing broadway theater. He also wanted someone to bring life back into the house following Sarah’s death.

On GAB, pretty much the same thing (mom died, dad needed someone to help with the kids) but Nell had already been the housekeeper for a while, while Fran became the Nanny kind of by accident, as she was originally a door to door cosmetics lady. GAB didn’t involve a smartass butler that always threw shade at the Chief’s business partner. And Nell was the maid. She did the cooking and cleaning, Fran just watched the kids and hung around the mansion in her short skirts and big hair 😂, while Niles did the cooking and cleaning. Also, Fran’s mom and grandmother were in almost every episode. I wonder which Nanny character Simpson would most resemble?

Also, by the final season it was almost a totally different show, like the final season of GAB. The kids got older, Fran and Mr. Sheffield got together, and she wasn’t really the “nanny” anymore. It was still hysterically funny and it could’ve gone on one more season had Fran and her husband (co-creator) not had marital issues that affected the environment on the set. But the first 3 seasons were the best.

Anyone else sort of think this was sort of an 80s The Nanny?

Between GAB, Diff'rent Strokes, Two of a Kind, The Nanny, and the Brady Bunch, it's amazing how many sitcoms there are involving widowed single parents of young kids, with relatively little psychological damage in the family. I'm probably forgetting many other shows with the same premise.

Well, Gimme A Break came first, so The Nanny would be a sort of 90s Gimme A Break.

You raise some good points. I can see how The Nanny tread some very familiar ground.

(Personally, I hated the last season of GAB, and never watch it in reruns, and I don't even remember the final season of The Nanny.)
