View Full Version : New Facts of Life podcast
80s Dude 09-18-2020, 05:29 PM Here is a new Facts of Life podcast. It's mainly about Tootie as she evolves through out the series. The hosts are first season fans with lots of references early on about that season being their favorite.
This is a one time podcast, not a running series like Face the Facts.

Do you have I-Tunes on your device?
RetroGuy2000 09-18-2020, 11:52 PM Thanks! This was soooo well-researched, and Eila even watched the Behind the Scenes Reelz documentary in preparation for this podcast. LOVED it! Eila points out the Little Darlings connections,
(The podcast is rated "clean", but they drop a ton of F-bombs and M-F-bombs).
Impressions 09-19-2020, 12:46 AM Blair was pressuring a boy to have sex in the back of a van? Blair wore a strap-on? Um....quite the intro. We knew it didn't happen but it was a joke. This podcast was ALL over the place. But it was fun because these were UBER fans and their discussion was frank, irreverant and candid. And they weren't shy about swearing or being vulgar at all.
The actual discussion started at 13 minues.
The episodes they discussed were "Rough Housing," "Double Standard," "Starstruck," "Pretty Babies," "Different Drummer," "Best Sister," "Cousin Geri," "Runaway," and "The Americanization of Miko."
The commentary was hilarious but they barely talked about season 5-9.
I just found it funny how they called Cloris Leachman, Clitoris Leachman :crazy:
Interesting podcast but wish they would've talked more about the later seasons.

They are like most of us here, the early season fans during the Eastland years.
80s Dude 09-19-2020, 08:18 AM They were Nancy fans and I am not talking about Nancy McKeon.
Impressions 09-19-2020, 12:39 PM Yeah, this podcast isn’t for everyone. They really speak insensitivity about some subject matter. Like, the time where Jo almost gets raped at the cotillion, they were very not empathetic about it, which was disappointing. There were parts that were not funny and actually offensive. I was really offended by was their “joke” about Jews on TV. They said Jewish people “weren’t allowed to be on TV” in the 1950s only if they were “wearing stripes” or “a star.” Then they proceeded to laugh for 30 seconds. They definitely crossed a line. I just found it very insensitive. So some parts were funny, but other parts were not. They really have a dark humor, so if you like that kinda stuff. It’s for you.
valentina warner 09-19-2020, 03:07 PM Is there a way for me to watch it on Youtube, like most of the stuff sent on this site? (the link you sent doesn't work for me)???????

What's wrong with your link? Is it not available in your country? Have you tried using a VPN?

I don't know what VPN is, but my laptop is kind or old (i bought it in 2011 and used): will that be the reason i cannot download the app? I know that it won't allowed me download programs sometimes, and for the apps i normally used my mobile phone.

Impressions 09-19-2020, 06:29 PM Okay, basically a VPN is a virtual private network that let's you view any content from any country. I know there's several free ones out there. I'm sure if you go into iTunes and search Jiffy Pop Culture, you should be able to bring it up as well. I don't think it has to do with your laptop.

'80sSitcoms 09-21-2020, 01:56 AM I really enjoyed the FOL episode! They are racier and more irreverent than you may be prepared for if you're more innocent and in love with the show on a wholesome level like lots of folks here are, but they are New Yorkers and Frank is a stand-up comic, so it kind of makes sense in that regard (that not all New Yorkers are racy or irreverant, it just seems to be part of the ingredient here, and especially with the stand-up comic angle).
I LOVE that they love season 1 so much! They even said it was a cop-out that there were "too many girls", like season 1 fans here say. So yeah, it gets a little racy and irreverent at times, but overall I enjoyed it because of their obvious love for the show and embracing it with open arms for fun reminiscing.
P.S. When I see Eila's name "Eila Mell" I think "Idina Menzel".

We who saw the show at the beginning never would describe the show as "wholesome", especially in the first season where it got quite racy or mature themes at times. A 10 year old using the word "kinky", a 12 year old talking about someone's father's kinky panties. A 10 year old and 13 year old handling bongs. Some of the alleged deleted dialogue in the Facts of Love.
RetroGuy2000 09-21-2020, 12:36 PM I LOVE that they love season 1 so much!
Yeah, that was a nice surprise!
They even said it was a cop-out that there were "too many girls", like season 1 fans here say.
The "too many girls" thing never made sense to me, and I was glad to see some podcasters poke holes in that idea. It's an idea that has run its course, but needs to be banished to the basement like... a bunch of lost girls were, so many years ago.
So yeah, it gets a little racy and irreverent at times, but overall I enjoyed it because of their obvious love for the show and embracing it with open arms for fun reminiscing.
I was just surprised to see it rated on iTunes as "clean", while Frank was dropping f-bomb after f-bomb, while talking about strap-ons and other stuff. I don't mind the language, but it seems iTunes isn't very good at correctly rating mature content.

I don't really buy the alleged deleted content in "The Facts of Love", but I agree that the show in general is less "wholesome" than some people remember. You've highlighted some things from the first season, but "Dear Me", "Pretty Babies", "Sex Symbol", and "Runaway" strike me as containing a lot of controversial sexual content. As the girls slowly became Amish, people began to forget that the earlier seasons had some adult themes.

There were some adult themes besides the First Time later in the series. Dancing as Fast as I Can where Mrs. G. takes Blair and Jo (Nancy M. was underage at this time) to a male strip show was definitely one that got on the Nick at Night banned episode list.

That episode actually ends up being in the first half of the series, being episode #89 of 209, so I wouldn't really call it "later in the series", unless you mean 'later than the first few seasons'. Nancy McKeon was indeed 17, but they didn't show anything beyond PG, anyway.

No no no, I didn't say the show was wholesome. I said, "They are racier and more irreverent than you may be prepared for if you're more innocent and in love with the show on a wholesome level like lots of folks here are" -- I was talking about some fans here, including me. Not the show. :)

'80sSitcoms 12-02-2020, 08:14 PM Our message board is discussed a little on jiffypopculture's episode "Mean Girls"! (ep #18)
The board talk starts at about 3:45.
At about 5:20 they discuss Impressions' offense at their joke about Jews.
And at about 10:00, 80sDude, you're mentioned!
Again, for those unfamiliar with this podcast, just know that while the hosts are very funny and entertaining, they are very New York, and can be irreverent, and do use foul language (Frank is a New York stand-up comic). Just a heads-up for anyone not familiar with this media duo yet so you're not shocked if you listen, lol.

And congrats to 80sDude, for the shout-out!
It's funny they mentioned my comment about the "family-friendly" rating!

Love their ShoutOut to me.
80s Dude 12-02-2020, 09:24 PM I wonder who the actress who was a semi-regular on the show who said that there was lots of fighting on the show? Was it Pamela Adlon?
RetroGuy2000 12-03-2020, 12:40 AM I wonder who the actress who was a semi-regular on the show who said that there was lots of fighting on the show? Was it Pamela Adlon?
That was my thought, when the lady said she's still very active in Hollywood. And it would mesh with what Pamela has previously said.

Charlotte did say that there was times of jealousy. She didn't go into specifics and took those secrets to her grave.

Yes, Charlotte has stated there were arguments, but the Core Four have, as well.
I honestly can't think of another semi-regular who would talk about problems on the set. Pamela's the only one.

It sounds consistent with other stuff Pamela Adlon has hinted at.

It really does sound like something she'd say.

I try to keep an open mind, as we have definitely learned some mind-blowing things, but the dialogue, as presented, seems weird, as you say.

And quite a lot sounds cut. Maybe if only the syndicated prints were available I'd buy it but the 24 min ep didnt include it...
