View Full Version : 31 Days, 31 horror movies...(Year 3)
Torgo 09-16-2020, 10:42 AM My 3rd year in a row of doing the October challenge hosted at the little forum I belong to, decided to post it early so I can start listing the horror movies I plan to watch. Some people that participate in this have already picked out the movies months ago. My problem is I want to watch any new movie to me as soon as I have it available, so even planning a couple of weeks a head isn't easy for me haha
My daughter, seeing as she's home this October is helping me find movies to watch.
So the rules: Watch at least 31 horror movies- at least 16 of them must be first time views
Torgo 09-16-2020, 10:43 AM One of the movies I've found to watch...
Fear Pharm (2020) Members of a deranged family use the world's scariest maze to hunt unsuspecting teens with perfect skin.

I watched the Babysitter sequel last week. It's ok. I didn't know the first one was that popular for Netflix to want a sequel. I like they were able to get the whole cast back for another film.
I'll play along with the challenge. October is the month I watch the most horror flicks. I'm sure I can find 16 new ones. Lin Shaye has some horror flicks I haven't caught up on. So do you have to have the list of movies ready before October 1st and posted here for others to see or do you just post each day in October what horror movie you saw with a little review?

Post them each day as you watch them. You don't have to review or anything. I sometimes put the ones in bold I liked.
cfr1970 09-17-2020, 12:40 AM Fear Pharm & The Barge People look pretty good. I'm scared to play the trailer because they always give too much of the movie away but I read the synopsis for each and put them on my list to watch.
I'm on a big horror kick lately and with buying my first Smart TV this year and discovering Tubi, i've thrown dozens of horror flicks into my queue that will take me months to see. And these are just the old films! And I haven't even started with Shudder yet.
All these films and channels will keep me busy for quite a long time.
I started watching 1 horror film each night myself this week. Tonight I watched "Slumber Party Massacre" from 1982. I've always heard of this one and even seen it in video stores as a teen in the 80's but never bothered to rent it because it looked too silly.
Finally after almost 40 years I gave it a look and actually enjoyed it. Everyone did stupid things no actual person would do when hunted by a killer in the house but it was still lots of fun and had some great gore.
I'm gonna watch part 2 tomorrow.
Torgo 09-17-2020, 03:34 PM I love Slumber Party Massacre. It was originally intended as a slasher spoof, but was changed at the last second, but a lot of the humor, stayed.
Well, I like part 2, but it is silly. It's so surreal and weird, but I understand people who don't like it as it has a totally different tone than the first.
I'd say slashers are my top 3 of the horror subgenre. 80s of course was the best decade for them, but I'm still always on the look out for new ones that are good, granted my gauge for good isn't always the same as what other people gauge them as. Which is why I enjoy slashers like Bikini Girls On Ice.
Torgo 09-17-2020, 03:46 PM Some 80's lesser knowns I'm going to try and watch...
Dark Enemy (1984)
Southern Shockers (1985)
Echoes (1982) aka Living Nightmare
The Clairvoyant (1982)
The Passing (1983)
The Intruder (1981)

I didn't like part 2 at all and i'm surprised Crystal Benard managed to have a successful career after that.
I guess I like my horror straightforward and serious. This was just too over the top and it didn't even feel like a horror film.
There's so many 80's horror i've never seen. I haven't heard of any of the ones in your latest post but will seek those out to watch. And Bikini Girls on Ice i've also never seen, but with a title like that, how can I not?

Haha understandable. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to liking Slumber Party Massacre 2, I like weird, goofy horror films, though they don't always work. Sometimes it depends on the mood I'm in.
I don't know how good those ones are, but I've seen most of the ones from the 80's, though I'm lacking in the non-North American releases and there are quite a few Asian and European horror films from that decade I want to see.
I love seeking out the obscure, mainly from the 80s and older.
Bikini Girls, for me, captured what I enjoy about 80s slashers, it isn't set in that decade, but it worked better than some that try to look like they were made back then. It also had a sequel Pin-Up Girls On Ice, which I enjoyed as well.
Torgo 09-22-2020, 09:41 AM Some more for my October watch...
Christopher 10-01-2020, 11:29 AM October 1st 2020:
I was able to get 3 movies in before starting work this morning. The ones I watched today are new ones for me:
Lover's Lane (2000) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187251/): Gotta give a shout out for having Sarah Lancaster in it. I remember her from Saved By The Bell The New Class. Also Riley Smith from Nancy Drew was in it. I kept thinking he was from teeny bopper movie in the 90's that I recognized and nope. It's from Nancy Drew I've seen the actor from. This movie had a weird twist at the end. SPOILERSI wasn't expecting a father / daughter killer duo act taking place. I thought it was going to be the guy who escaped the mental hospital. Overall I give this movie 4 out of 5. I'll be giving it another rewatch again. It fits the nostalgic 90's horror films I enjoy a lot.
The Cottage (2012) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1977941/): I decided to watch this instead of what I originally planned. I like David Arquette's acting so when I saw he was in this, I gave it a shot. What a weird ass movie this is. It's on Tubi if anyone wants to see it. I give it 3 out of 5. It's not spectacular or brilliant by any means. It's good. It's worth seeing if you're a David fan.
Most Likely To Die (2015) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4163224/): Another film on Tubi I found. It has Heather Morris from Glee in it. It's a slasher film. I was expecting someone else to be the killer the whole time I was watching this. I like the mask they used for the killer and the razors at the corners of the graduation hat the killer wore. That was clever. Overall I give it 3 out of 5. I don't think I'll be rewatching it. Once was enough.
Before the challenge started, I watched quite a bit of new horror movies off Shudder and Tubi. I'm just going to list the ones I like. From Shudder I like the following ones: Can't Take It Back (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2142987/) (Another Jill Larson horror flick, love it), The Last Showing (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2179239/) (although I liked it mainly for Robert Englund), Monster Party (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6556576/) (definitely worth a shot watching), Class of 1984 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083739/) (it has the feel of Sometimes They Come Back (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102960/) to it), and Daniel Isn't Real (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8745960/) (I really enjoyed this one, it was crazy). From Tubi, just Hangman (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4441422/)with Jeremy Sisto in it. It was clever and makes you think what happens to your home when you're away on vacation. I have a huge list of films to watch on both Shudder and Tubi for the challenge. I'll either try watching some more tonight or wait until tomorrow.

Fear PHarm (2020) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9191844/): This is the only movie I was able to get in today. I forgot The Boys was new today. This is a weird ass movie. I was creeped out in some scenes. I hope this does well enough for a sequel though. I think they could keep going with the plot they have. I give it 4 out of 5. This is a movie that fits well paired with Haunt (2019) in a rewatch.

Seems a sequel is in the works: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13197764/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3
Christopher 10-03-2020, 07:04 PM October 3rd, 2020: I decided I'm going to link the movies I watch to their IMDb page.
Home Sweet Home (2013) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2348394/): Found this movie on Tubi. It's low budget with just three main performers, but it's worth a watch. I was taken back at the end of the film. Did not see that coming. Because of the twist, I give it 4 out of 5 and definitely recommend it for horror fans.
All Through The House (2015) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4278962/): I love Christmas horror films and this one was so badly acted but worth it. This movie regardless of how cheap it looks has an interesting story. I enjoyed it and will be adding it to my collection of annual Christmas movies each year. I give it 3 out of 5.
Black Christmas (2019) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10481868/): What a huge waste of time. They took a classic horror Christmas movie and made it about politics of how women need to be kept in line. I can't believe they actually made me want to see the 2006 version again to forget about the crap this movie was. The 2006 was crap as well but at least they were somewhat based on the original. I give this 2019 crap 1 out of 5 if not a zero. It's not worth watching.
Wrong Turn (2003) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295700/): I've already seen this so it's my first rewatch of a horror movie for this challenge. Because I'm a Buffy fan and an Eliza Dushku fan, I'm so giving this 5 out of 5  This movie is fun rewatching.
Seems a sequel is in the works: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13197764/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3
I'm glad Aimee Stolte is listed. She was my favorite character in the movie.
Torgo 10-04-2020, 10:03 AM I'm glad Aimee Stolte is listed. She was my favorite character in the movie.
Of the horror films I've watched set at Halloween Hayride attractions, this is probably the best one I've seen. The worst being the 2004 film The Maize: The Movie.
Christopher 10-04-2020, 04:53 PM October 4th 2020: Horror Movie Rewatch Day. I didn't feel like watching anything new today.
The Hills Have Eyes (1977) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077681/): Wrong Turn got me in the mood. The special effects of the cannibals is really bad compared to the remake. You can tell there wasn't much to their budget when creating this. It's still a classic so I give it 4 out of 5.
The Hills Have Eyes (2006) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454841/): This is one of those rare cases where the remake is better than the original. I like that they were able to show more detail about how the mutated cannibals came to be. We also got to see the town they live in when Doug goes searching for his baby. I give this 4 out of 5.
I've Been Waiting For You (1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143296/): This made for TV horror flick is always fun to watch. There's not a lot of killing for a slasher flick, but the cast makes up for it. I give it 4 out of 5.
Urban Legend (1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146336/): I love this movie. Rebecca Gayheart was perfect in this film. I love her big scene at the end. Definitely a 4 out of 5.
So I noticed when I clicked on Rebecca Gayheart at IMDb there's a page for a new Urban Legend (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11867602/). Not only is Rebecca listed, but Loretta is too. I hope this is real. I would love to see another take on this movie with these two.
Of the horror films I've watched set at Halloween Hayride attractions, this is probably the best one I've seen. The worst being the 2004 film The Maize: The Movie.
I looked up the Maize. It has a 1.9 rating with reviews asking how did that get made
Christopher 10-06-2020, 08:16 AM October 5th 2020:
2001 Maniacs (2005) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0264323/): Rewatch. I like it mainly for Robert Englund and Lin Shaye.
2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams (2010) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0858411/): Rewatch. While not as good as the first one with Robert Englund, it has Lin Shaye who makes up for it.

*This is one of two horror films released this year with this title, I do plan on watching the other. Hopefully it will be better.
10 first time views so far. Favorite of those would be Halloween Party (something clicked for me with this film, the backstory, the characters, managed to creep me out)
Least favorite is Scare Me (the first one I watched about the group of friends having a Scare Me contest, the acting was horrendous.)
The other Scare Me about the two writers in a cabin during a power outage who keep each other entertained by telling scary stories to each other was very good. This one's a Shudder Original.
The Ghost In The Darkness had some good ideas, a good backstory. But it was all over the place, started out as found footage, turned into a slasher, then went back to found footage.
Cold Prey III, love the first 2, snow-set slasher films from Norway. Part III takes place back in the 80's long before the first two films are set. We got more backstory on the killer, but they didn't overdo it by over-explaining everything from the previous movies.
Christopher 10-07-2020, 06:54 PM October 6th 2020: The Joy Ride franchise rewatch.
Joy Ride (2001) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206314/): This is like a Disney film compared to the sequels. The sequels dropped the suspenseful aspect and went straight for the gore. I like Joy Ride for what it brought and how it was able to scare the audience without blood, guts, and gore.
Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (2008) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1140941/): This one is alright. They ramp up the gory scenes and dropped the suspense scare that part 1 was all about. I still enjoy it.
Joy Ride 3: Road Kill (2014) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3138376/): I like this one better than part 2. It was exciting like part 1 and had the reference to part one when mentioning "candy cane".
October 7th 2020: Due to work, I'm only able to get one in today. I chose a new one for me since it was mentioned in another thread.
Hell Fest (2018) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1999890/): I don't know how I missed this when it was released. It even has an actress I like from the Scream TV series, Bex Taylor-Klaus. Overall this was a good movie. I hope from what we saw at the end there is a sequel in the works. I think this is an idea that can keep going in multiple sequels.
October 8th 2020: Today is a rewatch of Eliza Dushku's other great horror flicks besides Wrong Turn.
Open Graves (2009) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870937/): I think it should have a higher rating. The cast isn't bad and the special effects were gruesome. I like this a lot better than Eliza's other scary movie, Soul Survivors (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218619/).
Eloise (2016) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3692652/): Just like Open Graves, it has a good cast and a gruesome story. It should have a higher rating from viewers. It's not a bad movie.
October 9th 2020: Today is a franchise rewatch of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There's 4 films in the franchise I like and rewatch every October.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072271/): Unlike the original Hills Have Eyes, this 70's classic holds up IMO. It has a scary feel to it and can make you jump.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0324216/): Not gonna lie, Jessica Biel was the reason I watched this when it came out. I became a fan for the film itself as I got older.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420294/): I love this one. The cast is solid and it stays true to the original in a lot of ways.
Texas Chainsaw (2013) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1572315/): I love the new take on the story and the ending. I would consider this the second best film in the franchise.
October 10th 2020: The Haunting of Bly Manor (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10970552/) came out yesterday, so I'm more interested in seeing that. Today I'm rewatching Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0804555/) so it's fresh for discussion with CFR.
October 11th 2020: I'm getting my plate full so I'm not able to watch as many horror movies I would like to each day. I only got one in today.
Hostel (2005) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450278/): This is a classic horror movie. There's lots of gore, yes, but it's overshadowed by the story.
October 12th 2020: Today I'm finishing up the Hostel franchise. Every October I have certain franchises I rewatch. This is one of em.
Hostel 2 (2007) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498353/): I like that this one wraps up Paxton's story in the beginning. This movie also gets a plus from me for having Desperate Housewives actors, Richard Burgi and Roger Bart, in it.
Hostel 3 (2011) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1255916/): Eh, it's alright. I think it's weaker than the first two.

*This is one of two horror films released this year with this title, I do plan on watching the other. Hopefully it will be better.
45 watched, 20 first timers, and only 6 I didn't enjoy, so not bad.
I didn't get to watch as many horror movies as I would have liked, in October. I watched Hostel, the first one. I also watched Halloween H20, I didn't think it was scary enough.

I like Hostel, and part 2, still have not seen the 3rd.
I don't think any of the sequels are scary, I'd say part 2, part 4, and the one from 2018 had a lot of good suspense. Then again, I don't think many slashers I've seen I would consider outright scary... of course there are exceptions to the rule like the original Halloween, and for me the original My Bloody Valentine.
Though as a kid, any slasher/horror movie scared me. Now days more often than not the films that still work for me, if not scaring me, at least creeping me out are found footage films.
