Yvonne De Carlo (1922-2007) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She and her mother were abandoned by her father when De Carlo was very young. She studied singing and dance as a girl, and moved to California in her late teens. There she worked as a dancer, and was signed by Paramount in 1942.
After a number of uncredited bit parts, De Carlo was cast in the lead role of Salome, When She Danced by independent producer Walter Wanger (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Wanger). She then worked for several years at Universal. De Carlo starred in Westerns like Frontier Gal and Black Bart, the film noir classic Criss Cross, and the pirate adventure Buccaneer’s Girl.
Although she did not make a lot of straight musicals, many of her roles took advantage of De Carlo’s singing and dancing talents.

In the early fifties, De Carlo continued to star in a variety of films of all genres. She appeared in Westerns like Silver City and Border River, the historical adventure Sea Devils, and the British comedies The Captain’s Paradise (with Alec Guinness) and Happy Ever After. In 1956, she appeared in one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, as Moses’s wife Sephora in The Ten Commandments.
When she stopped getting good film roles in the late 1950s, De Carlo began working more in television. 1960s television audiences will recall as Lily Munster on CBS’s The Munsters. She also began doing some musical theater work. She was Carlotta Campion in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, and did a variety of regional and touring company work. De Carlo continued to make periodic film and television appearances until the mid-1990s.
