I always heard that it was the Lamont role that was offered to Cleavon Little. He was 32 when Sanford & Son premiered. Too young to play Fred Sanford.

Just prior to the start of the final season, Redd Foxx was offered a comedy/variety show on ABC. But he was contractually obligated to do one more year of Sanford and Son. It was bitter sweet in the Fall of 1976 when the season started with The Hawaiian Connection. We were glad the show was back with new episodes after the long summer of reruns, but sad that we all knew it would be the last year of the show.
