I have been watching "Dark Shadows: The Beginning" on Amazon Prime. These are the pre-Barnabas episodes. I am really enjoying them. Although I love Barnabas and Julia, they did take a lot of air time from the others. It is nice to see Elizabeth, Roger, Carolyn, David Vicky and Burke get so much story.
It moves a little slower in the beginning episodes but picks up around episode 50. I am in episodes 80's and the supernatural is starting to be introduced. They also do a lot of actual footage outside Collinwood and in the town of Collinsport. It is very entertaining. I highly recommend it.

Definitely on my to-watch list when I'm done with the regular series.

I think the best pre-Barnabas story is the Phoenix storyline. Diana Millay is a lot better in this role the first time than her second in the 1897 story. She has so many creepy facial expressions. The best is when she uses her powers to set fire in Sam's house. Elizabeth comes up to her at the fireplace in the living room of Collinwood and ask if she's ok. Laura just has this evil grin on her face that's priceless. I'm surprise this wasn't a ratings hit. The story is well done and the acting is superb. Dark Shadows is better when they have the supernatural elements.

I was just going to post about this storyline--I too think it's the best of the b/w's. That boathouse ending is a keeper!
