View Full Version : Sequel series in the works

I don’t like that this implies that Tony and Angela aren’t together. And if they’re not, then what is Samantha doing in Angela’s house? I wish they’d leave this alone.
mustCtv 08-04-2020, 09:34 PM I have to agree with you, TV Guy. Reboots tend to pale in comparison to and detract from their originals. While this one might've bucked that trend 10-20 years ago, I can't see this show without Mona and especially Angela.
Duster76 08-04-2020, 10:54 PM Does anyone see anything that even resembles an original thought here:
"The new take “will explore generational differences, as well as opposing world views and parenting styles"
Sony is shopping this reboot, hopefully the potential buyers will be practitioners of caveat emptor staying far away from this trainwreck.
yanksno1 08-06-2020, 08:41 PM I'm all for this if Tony and Alyssa are involved. They better get Judith involved cause I'd be so bummed if Tony/Angela weren't together. That's a pretty easy way to write them (both actors) right there.
I’d watch if it popped up on something I already have, but I wouldn’t subscribe to anything I don’t have just for it.
Wildchats 08-10-2020, 07:32 PM When I saw this I thought...Sam single parent Living at home with Tony and Angela.
Duh!
They are not creative enough. They have to do this with every reboot but at least say that Tony and Angela are married because if not and we have to invest again to wait and see...BIG INSULT. This will be just as bad as what they did with Coach as they had killed off Shelly Fabares character and Luther was nowhere...well, I didn’t follow that one originally, but I read reviews that while taping the pilot the crew of the Coach reboot a few years ago were told it wasn’t going ahead. If they mess this one up I could see the same...
Tony Danza said a little while back there’s no more Mona, so it would never happen as she needs to be there. If they have Angela and Tony divorced, separated, or never married after the series finale of the original that will be a shark jumper.
.
RetroGuy2000 09-01-2020, 06:25 AM If they get Angela and Jonathan, and it's on a streaming service I get, I'll tune in. I wish them luck.

I'm just worried it's going to be a vehicle for Alyssa's political views. I just can't see how she'd be involved otherwise, because that's all she's about these days.
The one good thing about Sony being involved is that Sony has said that whoever buys it will have full licensing rights of the entire series, so... if nothing else, *maybe* this could be a chance to get our full series on dvd finally.

I agree with this. I loved this show, I wanted to be like Samantha, thought she was the coolest girl. I respect that actors, celebrities, people have political views, but she definitely has established herself recently as more of a social media politics advocate and now when I see her, that is all I think about with her.

I am almost certain that will be a central part of her character in the reboot because it was a big hit with Roseanne being a Trump supporter/republican. I know she was later fired but that wasn't for her character being a republican but for stuff she said outside of the show. If they made Tony a an old school Italian republican it would be a great source of tension on the show, but I doubt they'd do that.

Yeah I don't get how that would happen. If Tony and Angela broke up (and never got married) then Tony would have 0% stake in that house. Even if they did get married and he got 50%, in most cases the couple would sell the house and split the $ to whatever % they (or rather, their lawyers) agreed on.
It would be more plausible that Jonathan inherited the house as her son. You know what that would be a great way to write him into the show, he lives in the apt they built for Mona and he is resentful she got the house :)
Novera 12-07-2020, 06:32 PM I'm all for this if Tony and Alyssa are involved. They better get Judith involved cause I'd be so bummed if Tony/Angela weren't together. That's a pretty easy way to write them (both actors) right there.
Especially since Judith was a powerhouse actor on that show, some of the greatest/most memorable scenes involved her. It would be like rebooting The Cosby Show without Phylicia Rashad, why bother?!

Well when you put it like that, 100% agree!!
Wildchats 07-15-2021, 04:29 PM No news on the reboot in over a year except some sources saying Alyssa is demanding stuff and Tony is bored by his character. If Judith is not there or they never married who the heck cares?!
Wildchats 07-15-2021, 04:30 PM Tony will be all “Angela is taking a long vacation, mourning the loss of her mother.” I can totally see them saying some crap like that...
MikeLutton 07-31-2021, 03:15 AM is this spinoff even happening
RetroGuy2000 08-01-2021, 03:26 AM is this spinoff even happening
This says the production is still happening, but things are in shambles (https://okmagazine.com/p/whos-the-boss-reboot-shambles-spills-source/), due to Judith Light and Danny Pintauro not appearing, and complaints from Tony Danza and demands by Alyssa Milano.

Judith Light not wanting to be a part of the new show makes sense, because she gets steady work, but you’d think Danny Pintauro would jump at this opportunity. Maybe he just doesn’t want to act anymore, period.
The reboot was already going to suffer from the absence of Katherine Helmond (arguably the MVP of the original series), but without the other two at the very least recurring, they might as well just call the whole thing off.

Yeah, I don't even understand how they can be living in the Bower house without a single Bower. Might as well call it The Micellis and have them back in New York.
Wildchats 10-31-2021, 08:38 AM Alyssa says they are still working on it...
Norman Lear could die any day and he’s producing. Did he work any way on the original?
Alyssa says it’s gonna be her way. What she views.
Tony apparently moves IN to help raise her kids when her husband leaves her.
Okay, so aside from it being Alyssa centered...
Tony moved out at some point after 1992. Sam is living in the house she lived in as a child w her kids but no mention of Angela...
I’m guessing...Tony and Angela married sometime later after the series finale in 1992...
Sam and her husband face troubles of owning a house so Angela let’s them stay there when she and Tony buy a place of their own. In time, Sam and her husband buy the Bower house.
Take things years later...
Sam had kids. They are older now maybe preteen and teen. Her husband divorced her and moved elsewhere. Mona died in the last year or so...
But where is Angela when Tony moves back in?
There are only a few guesses
She’s on biz trip for months and months overseas.
She is away on an island after her mother’s death. She left to escape the area and to be at peace.
She and Tony divorced over the years and she lives elsewhere.
She passed away.
Either scenario, it’s a shark jumper. Judith needs to be there always.
Another thing is Punky Brewster was cancelled. That didn’t get much rerun since the late 1990s and kids up Into 20 somethings were not familiar with her, so less viewers and it was cancelled after one season.
Who’s The Boss? Will have an older audience of 40s-70s. Not many who are early to mid 30s or before know of it as it wasn’t much on reruns. Maybe on Nick in the early 2000s, but that’s it, right?
Tony will attract some audience and Alyssa but that’s it.
There will be less interest if Judith is a guest star or not there in the beginning or rarely/never there. She needs to be there 100 percent on and the old fans will watch. If she’s not they won’t care.
The way they are rebooting Head Of The Class and Night Court, I can’t see either lasting long either. Those will have a mid 40s to 60s audience with some audience being younger, especially NBC Night Court, but I doubt either will
be long running...
RetroGuy2000 10-31-2021, 04:29 PM Alyssa says they are still working on it...
Thanks for the update, Mark!
Norman Lear could die any day and he’s producing. Did he work any way on the original?
Embassy Television, which produced the series for the first four years, was Norman Lear's company. He was uncredited, but must have been involved in some way. On some Embassy shows, he was a silent producer. On The Facts of Life (where he is uncredited), he gave Mindy Cohn notes on acting, and personally brought Geri Jewell onto the show after spotting her in a comedy club.
Wildchats 11-02-2021, 10:06 AM That’s why it doesn’t list him as a producer on there online. Or maybe it does...I just know he was big with those main shows in the 1970s and into 1980s. I didn’t know about WTB and Facts. What other shows was he silent on? Diff’rent Strokes? Gimme A Break!?
Wildchats 11-02-2021, 10:09 AM It’s gonna suffer mostly if Angela is not on the cast. It doesn’t matter if Jonathan is there or not. But Angela needs to be. If she’s not married to Tony, divorced or dead, it’s over before it even began. If she’s just away, eh...Alyssa could never hold a show on her own. WTB was Tony’s and then Judith below him. This show they are making it as if it’s “Starring Alyssa Milano” several bad actors most likely with hip attitudes of today as are all kids on tv now, and “And Tony Danza as Tony Micelli”. Will there be a theme song? A proper opening credits? An update version of the original? Maybe newer lyrics or will they do the cheap way and just throw in a logo and created by and that’s it...
I feel if it gets picked up it only does one season if Angela is not there full time. Even if she’s a guest in one or a few episodes. If Tony is there she should be as well.
Wildchats 01-18-2022, 12:48 AM And just like that...
Head Of The Class reboot...gone after one season!
Night Court has been pushed until next year! Not good news at all. Not at all!
And then there's this show getting a "most likely reboot" where there's just Sam and Tony and her kids. Big deal.
The show will last 1 season and be pulled due to low ratings.
Alyssa says they are still working on it...

I really don't know how well a reboot of Night Court (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcKaWLGrvhQ) will fly considering that many of the principal cast (Harry Anderson, Markie Post, Charles Robinson, etc.) are now deceased and only John Larroquette is still around to bridge the gap.
Judith Light not wanting to be a part of the new show makes sense, because she gets steady work, but you’d think Danny Pintauro would jump at this opportunity. Maybe he just doesn’t want to act anymore, period.

This kind of reminds me of when Jeremy Miller was making the rounds (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-7131017/Growing-Pains-revival-works-original-cast-hoping-honor-late-Alan-Thicke.html) about wanting to do a revival (https://www.closerweekly.com/posts/growing-pains-reboot-jeremy-miller-talks-honoring-alan-thicke/) of Growing Pains. Even then, I never understood the point of wanting to do such a thing considering that Alan Thicke had already been dead for at least three years, Joanna Kerns is primarily focused on TV directing now, Kirk Cameron (https://www.nickiswift.com/77659/whatever-happened-kirk-cameron/) has essentially become persona non grata in mainstream Hollywood due to his extreme religious views, and Tracey Gold is for all intents and purposes, now (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracey_Gold#Filmography) retired from acting. Plus, there were already two reunion movies from the early 2000s, so I don't know what other ground there is to cover for Growing Pains and the Seaver family.

I seem to recall seeing Tony Danza on Joy Behar's HLN talk show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R23E5eNnm4I) when he was promoting his reality show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdMcKZavVUI) about him being an English teacher at a Philadelphia high school. And Tony told Joy that many of the students didn't recognize him from his other job as an actor, since Who's the Boss and Taxi came along well before they were even born. And bare in mind that, WTB in particular, went off the air in 1992 and Teach: Tony Danza (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teach:_Tony_Danza) was filmed during the 2009-10 school year.
This says the production is still happening, but things are in shambles (https://okmagazine.com/p/whos-the-boss-reboot-shambles-spills-source/), due to Judith Light and Danny Pintauro not appearing, and complaints from Tony Danza and demands by Alyssa Milano.
Alyssa Milano Teases Who's The Boss Sequel Show In Development (https://screenrant.com/whos-boss-sequel-show-alyssa-milano-development-update/)
Now, during an interview with Fox 5's Good Day New York (https://www.fox5ny.com/video/1025033), Milano teased the Who's The Boss sequel show that has been in development for several years. The pandemic has delayed the project a bit, but Milano hopes it will come into fruition soon. The actress says producers are currently working to “figure out what the show would look like” and “what stage in our lives we would pick up from.” Read what she had to say below:
We’re actually developing a reboot, well it’s more of a sequel and we’ve been developing it now for a couple of years. The pandemic sort of put everything on hold, but we’re hopeful that before I’m in my 70s we’ll be able to.
Milano's update does not offer much new information from when the Who's The Boss sequel show was first announced, though it's nice to hear the project is still in development and has not fallen to the wayside. It was previously reported that the revival would take place 30 years after the events of the original show and find Sam living as single mother with her father, though now Milano says they are still working to hash out these details.
The sequel show is being developed at Sony, though there's no word as the whether it will be a streaming or traditional network series. If the sequel show has any chance of getting off the ground, it will require the return of both Milano and Danza to maintain its signature father-daughter camaraderie. If the success of recently revived sitcoms like The Conners, Fuller House, and Will & Grace is any indication, Who's The Boss should find a suitor very soon.
Wildchats 01-29-2022, 07:34 PM Another update is she says they’ve been working on it the last few years. It’s just in development with her and Tony and where their characters are now in their lives.
It will for sure be cancelled after one season. Alyssa even said Sam was the boss on the original. Again, no news on Angela or Jonathan...
I can see why Tony hates his character being retired. And just where is Angela?!
Cancelled after one season.
Wildchats 05-24-2022, 06:20 PM No more news on this? It’s likely not being made for 2022. Again, it needs Angela there full time or it won’t be good
biffbronson 05-25-2022, 11:59 AM I agree with that, Judith Light needs to be involved, otherwise a series seems to me like "why bother."
I'm still disappointed that Coach never came back, although understandable especially considering Shelley Fabares' health concerns.

I'm almost terrified to say this because I don't want to be interrupted as some sort of "straw man argument" but at this point, but I wonder if Alyssa Milano is now associated more to people of a certain age with Charmed than she is with Who's the Boss? even though WTB was the show that put her on the map in the first place.
I guess what I'm saying is that I don't know if there's really much of an audience (outside of people who were old enough to remember watching it when it was last on the air 30+ years ago) for WTB since like you said, it doesn't seem to get rerun that heavily in syndication or cable anymore. Plus, outside of Season 1, the show has never been officially released on DVD.
It’s gonna suffer mostly if Angela is not on the cast. It doesn’t matter if Jonathan is there or not. But Angela needs to be. It sounds like Alyssa is trying give Who's the Boss? the "Fuller House effect". Where Sam like DJ on Fuller House, now becomes the unquestioned central figure, which has her in a scenario as a newly single mom. So the show would be something nostalgic for older fans and something that in theory, the new generation could enjoy.
Wildchats 06-14-2022, 08:06 AM And now Tony gave an update saying they are waiting for the writers.
"Judith will play a small part but it's mostly gonna be me and Alyssa."
So she WON'T be living there is my understanding. She won't be at her house. She will be "Away" in some sort.
1. She's phoning in every now and then from vacation/work
2. She went to live with some guy elsewhere.
3. Her job brought her to another location and she moved there.
SHE AND TONY DID NOT MARRY FROM WHAT He's saying....or they divorced or they are separated.
I could easily have written any of these into a show, but, you know, I can't screenwrite because I only went to the 1 year program at UCLA even though I was you know, um...interviewed for the MFA back in 2005.
Hollywood is bad. It's ruining shows. Melrose Place on the CW was pure mess. These writers DON'T KNOW THE SHOWS. All these new 20 or 30 somethings..."We never watched it" they'd claim. Same old same old...
MikeLutton 06-16-2022, 02:09 AM im going to miss Mona
yanksno1 06-16-2022, 09:13 PM I wonder what's going on there. Glad she's involved somehow, but she deserves more (unless it's Judith's decision).
Wildchats 06-19-2022, 12:12 PM Bringing her back for even the smallest part is gonna shatter the returning fan base. They will need to get new fans and it will be hard as not many are familiar with these actors ages 20s-40s.
It will be cancelled if she’s elsewhere phoning in or stopping by time to time. She will need to be CAST for it to at least get a 2nd season.
It’s gonna be about TONY and SAM and her kids…not Angela…so it’s gonna shatter the returning fans.
If her small part doesn’t involve living in the house or lived in the back house or whatever Mona lived in…FINE. But if she’s living elsewhere and will have just phone ins or small little scenes…no, better off not doing it. It won’t be good she moved out and away from Tony. Again, old fans won’t be happy, even if she’s away from him for something.
When I watched as a kid, it ended when I was 9 in 1992, but it was about Tony and Angela and their relationship. Sam was just some punk kid turned hot girl and it wasn’t really about her in my opinion. Sam and Jonathan and Mona were just there. It was about Tony and Angela.
