View Full Version : Was it wild parsley or was it marijuana?
GoldenTV 07-26-2020, 02:53 AM In the episode "Fred's Treasure Garden", Grady was attending Fred's garden while Fred was away and one of the vegetable Fred had planted was either wild parsley or marijuana. The episode is not conclusive as to whether the plant is either one.
The cops ate salad which also had wild parsley in it and they did get a severe case of munchies. But they also had cocktail drinks with that salad, so it might have been the drink which made them light headed and hungry.
On the other hand, Ester also had a big bowl that salad and it seem not to have effected her. Grady even ask Ester whether she had the munchies after finishing up the salad :D
The only who seem sure the plant was Marijuana was Rollo (and maybe Lamont), but he never got a chance to smoke it to prove positive it was marijuana. So it was left to audience to conclude whether it was the real thing or not.
Knowing that it was Fred that planted it I say it was Marijuana, or as he called it Latin Lettuce https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/images/smilies/lol.gif

PracTz 08-17-2020, 02:41 AM I tend to think it WAS wild parsley- mainly because I can't imagine Fred trusting Lamont (and especially Grady) to take care of the other kind of plant. But then again, I never got why Fred would have left Grady instead of Bubba in charge. Bubba would have called it in an instant while Grady was so naturally spacy, one could have never told whether or not he smoked it!
biffbronson 08-17-2020, 08:55 AM That was one of my favorite eps. with Grady. I know he's a goofy character, but I can't help busting out laughing at times... :)

Heheheh..maybe it was Grady who planted the seeds accidentally :D
I think Bubba had its own shenanigans too. Remember the episode 'I want my daddy's record" where he left box of records behind the truck https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/images/smilies/lol.gif

Grady and Lamont did make a good team. I am surprise the show producers didn't see the potential for future collaboration between the two in a show.

I think the obvious reason Fred chose Grady and not Bubba was for STORY purposes. Bubba was pretty easy-going, so I doubt there would have been much conflict between Bubba and Lamont, so not many could stories would have come of it.
Out of all Fred's friends, Bubba seems to be the one Lamont gets along with the most.

Another reason might be that I think Bubble had his own job to go to (whatever he did for a living) and Grady was retired. In one episode, it was mentioned that Grady was unemployed for last 20 years :D

Yeah Bubba always seemed a little younger than Fred to me.... If Fred was 65, Bubba seemed maybe like 60. Grady always seemed older maybe in his 70s.

Yet Whitman Mayo was in his 40s while he was playing Grady.

It was not marijuana that they showed the viewers, and it was not the flat leaf parsley that I grow either
So it was just some interesting plant they used as a prop ...
I'll have to watch it again and narrow it down if I can
As to how the marijuana got growing there, if that's what it was, remains a mystery, though it was very common in So. Cali then & now. That episode was the only one that ever addressed marijuana ? I can't remember any others ...
Cloud9 Lorraine 11-25-2020, 02:32 PM I think it was wild parsley and Smitty and Hoppy got tipsy from the mint juleps. Neither Aunt Esther or Grady got high from the plant, so probably the intention of the show was wild parsley, although they never confirmed it.

I think another sitcom from that era that mentioned marijuana was Three's Company where they found plant growing in Roper's back yard while they were cleaning up.

Rollo was pretty sure that it was weed. But he didn't get a chance to smoke some :D
