Have any of you guys on this board heard about this?
MTV and Showtime both know for putting on gay related programs hint Queer as Folk and The Real World. Plan on launching a gay channel soon in the US. What are your opions about this?

I don't care, cause we probably wouldn't get the channel anyway, cause RCN is so damn cheap. We don't get about 1/2 the channels we pay for, even though RCN insists we do..well look at our tv, we DONT get HBO, we DONT get MTV2, etc except that yeah, we're charged for them every month. stupid hoes @ rcn

That's not too bad. WE don't get Nickelodeon/N@N, TVland, Comedy Central, MTV2, HBO, Cinemax, The Movie Channel, Showtime, E!, Animal Planet, TLC, etc.

Umm since when is The Real World a gay show? That's stupid.. a gay person on a show doesn't make it a gay show.

isnt it funny how they cater minorities? its ok for there to be a black entertainment channel, but society wouldnt allow a white entertainment one. and now they got a gay channel? i think some people are pretty stupid. people are people to me and no one deserves to be catered any differently than anyone else.

The channel is not intended to be insulting homosexuals. It's like BET Black Entertainment Television, that channel isn't to insult anyone who is black. It's soppose to celebrate being gay just like BET is to celebrate being black and lifetime is to celebrate being a women. Why would you think it is to insult gays?

Well I don't think that is what tv lover meant. That Real Worlder is a gay program. But MTV does have gay friendly programming they just had a True Life: I'm coming out.

Why do women have a million channels devoted to being a woman, but men have didly squat? I think there should be "The Guy Channel" where thye show nothing but Mondy Night Football reruns, Home Improvement, and other shows in which the man is the star of the show! Down with women's channels! ('cept for Lifetime and Oxygen)

And another thing, what exactley would they show on The Gay Channel? Would it be something like Fight for Your Rights movies 24/7?

I agree.There's nothing wrong with homosexuals but the GAY channel.I don't even like the name! I'm surprised some homosexuals didn't say "It's a good idea but I don't want it called the GAY Channel.Why not the Lifestyle network?"

That seems a little weird...but I prolly won't get or watch it any ways!

A company is already starting one called 'Pridevision' according to an article I read...it would show stuff like "Goodmorning Gay America" and other shows geared towards the lifestyles of homosexual people.

I think TBS is kinda of that but not really. They have those movies for guys who like movies.

Actually they haven't come up with a name for the cannel at this time. But I doubt they'll go with the gay channel.

But I do beleive that Canada has a gay channel already called pride vision I heard that somewhere.

I don't really know. If they made some good programs on the channel it depends. I won't just watch the channel because they have gay programming. They must have quality shows for me to keep watching them.

Of course not!! I watch shows because they are funny and have really good writing. Why would I do that? That's like me being half asian which I am only watching shows because they have asians in them. I enjoy shows from I Love Lucy to Scrubs. It's nice to see gays and lesbians in shows but that's not the reason I watch the shows.

I'm glad that there will be a gay channel because it will help solve some problems that gays go through almost everyday. Can you imagine everyone hating you because of your sexual orientation or being abondoned by your friends and loved ones? Gays go through that kind of stuff and it ain't fun. I have sympathy for them because it shouldn't be that way. Gays shouldn't have to go through that kind of pain and hurt. I feel sorry for them and my heart goes out to them because they are the ones that have deal with those painful issues and suffer. :(

I know that your heart is in the right place but it will take a lot more than just a few TV shows to make life as a gay person any easier.
I think a channel aimed towards the gay community is a cool idea. I do believe we have a channel like that in the UK right now but it's only available on digital satalite and - surprise, surprise - the channel isn't actually advertised anywhere! The only way you'd know it was on was if you happened to be channel-hopping and found it accidentally.
There are a few gay themed shows on prime time TV here though, which is cool. But the thing that annoys me about these shows is that they are completely geared towards gay men - there's nothing for gay women. I don't like 'That Gay Show' on BBC Choice but 'Gaytime TV', which was on BBC2 a few years ago, was pretty cool.

I think we here in America have a few gay themed shows such as Will and Grace, the American version of Queer AS Folk, and a new cartoon showtime has done called Queer Duck, which is a weird cartoon.

But we do have many shows with character that are gay.

why cant gays just watch lifetime?

Have you seen the UK version of 'Queer As Folk'? It's better than the US version (although the storylines are pretty similar).

I don't care if there was a gay channel out there. If there will be one I hope they will air Ellen. I love her shes so funny! Her new show wasn't as great as the old one. Now she will be having a variety show this fall from what I heard.

I don't watch the US version very often. And I have never seen the UK version. Although I have heard it has come out on video and DVD. I just have a hard time watching QAF because it is kind of sick.

I do think it is somewhat misrepresentative of the gay community (I dislike the term 'gay community' but I'm not sure what else to call it). It gives those who don't know any better the impression that gay people spend all their time clubbing and picking up complete strangers - which is obviously completely false.

Exactly. The only difference I see is sexual orientation. Other than that, the gay community is the same as the straight (I don't know what else to call it) community.

I think this is an idea whose time has come.

We already have at least 3-5 women networks (3 Lifetimes, Oxygen, and WE), at least 2 black oriented channels (BET and BET Jazz). Personally, I also think it can be easily argued that we already have several male-oriented channels, such as TNT, TBS, the 6,000 sports channels, plus the fact that white males are very well represented on just about all television programs. BUT, if some guys want to get whiny and demand a WHITE MAN channel, whatever, more power to you, I hope you get your channel.

Just as I think it's fine if there's a gay oriented network.

And of course they'd better show Ellen and These Friends of Mine ;)

Can't say that I read everything everyone said so I might be missing something but so far the channel just has a button pushing label as far as I know and no programs. Shoot, maybe it will be a barrel of laughs or maybe it will be a big bore, or maybe it will be enlightening. Don't know yet and see no reason not to wait and see. As the cheer leaders say, "bring it on."

No offense but you sound a little prejudice there about white people. Since when have white people whine and demanded more white channels? And where the heck is this other Lifetime channel? I only get 2 Lifetime channels, Lifetime & Lifetime Movie Channel. Whats on this other Lifetime station?

and i dont know if your refurring to something i said Bootsie, but i never said there needed to be a white channel. i was saying because of society, they couldnt have one. only cause blacks were used to do dirty work back in the 1800s which they still havent forgiven for when no one today ever was remotely involved in it even if their ancestors were.

And notice, I didn't say that white people were demanding more channels. Never once did I say that, if you can read.

I was merely making a tongue-in-cheek response to Sofl's earlier post about catering to minorites. In my experience, it is mostly white men who get their panties in a bunch over so-called special treatment of minorities. Of course I realize not all white men think this way, that is why it was tongue in cheek: meant to be slightly amusing. I suppose it backfired.

I just personally don't understand why people get all huffy about "catering" channels when to me it is fairly obvious that white people are already well represented on almost all television programs. I wish we could expect the networks to be more responsible and inclusive of everyone, but since that hardly ever seems to happen, if a network devoted to that is needed, I don't see the problem with it.

I think its stupid when they make new TV shows or now a new TV station just to show equality and difference. Hire a black man to act because he can act..not because he is black.

They try to add diversity because people complain its stupid. Like I said....hire a man because they can act...not based on their race. A gay channel? Who cares. 1. are you from/ live in Virginia or at least the northwestern part of that state? Reason I ask is that I am from there and talk about people who are proud to be homophobic, many in that area are for example I know of a certain cable system in that state that actually blocks out Showtime's Queer as Folk and HBO's OZ for "promoting homosexuals". When time comes for their shows to air all you get a black screen.

also same area its actually "against the law" for someone who is gay to be on the radio there reguardless if they are "out" or not.
In fact many radio stations there make it a "rule" only to hire marrieds so they can be "safe", guess they never heard of "bi-sexual".

2. what is your opinion on the Rev. Fred Phelps? The so called Baptist preacher who goes to funerals of gays ( or actually anyone who dies from Aids as he belives only gays get AIDS ) and protests the funerals and saying things like Matthew Sheppard deserved what he got. Holding up signs like "god hates ***s" and shows pictures of nude men having sex spreading hate.

The tension on this board is making me nervous! Look, to all who disagree with homosexuality, you are entitled to your opinion. But I think you have to realize that being gay is not something that you choose to be. Why would someone who is gay choose to be? To be harrassed verbally, mentally, and in some cases physically? To hear people talking about them behind their backs and insulting them? Just at least think about that. I'm not saying that you don't, I just wanted to bring that point to life on the board.

And the only reason that is immoral/a sin in my book is because it is sex outside of marriage in the church. Just can we all move on. I agree with that- I haven't read all of this but I have some friends who are gay and it doesn't matter in the slightest to me, I judge someone on who they are as a person and I can't understand why it does or should do anyone else.

And I also agree with Bootsy's last comment. I too know people like SoFl - they're all brash and loud about how much they hate gay people but when they come face to face with one they're too chicken to say that ***** right to 'em.
The thing that makes me laugh about these bigots is that they all claim thay can "spot a gay a mile off" but they really have no idea. This girl I know, Michelle, is a total bigot . She claims she can tell if someone is gay just by looking at 'em and there's no way she'd never even sit in the same room as a gay person. Yet she's perfectly happy to sit and talk to me and we even have a laugh together. I don't have the heart to break the news to her.... :lol:
