View Full Version : Question about shows that were on in two decades
Fallon97 07-20-2020, 07:41 PM What decade would you say a show belongs to if it extends to another decade?
For example, "The Jeffersons" was on from 1975-1985. Would you consider this show a 70s show?
Or "The Facts Of Life," which began in 1979-1988? Would you consider this show a 70s show or 80s show?
Also, "Dallas" was on from 1978-1991?

It depends on the show in question, technically you could consider them as being from either decade. But with "The Jeffersons" I would consider it a 70's show as it seems to be defined by 70's morals (in terms of writing and the tone of the show) and production values. "FOL" and "Dallas" both aired the majority of their runs in the 1980's though and I would personally consider them 80's shows.
JamesG 07-20-2020, 08:37 PM I look at it like this... I consider myself a 90's kid, though I was born in 1985, since most of my childhood memories are from the 90's. I don't really have any personal connection with the 80's.
"The Brady Bunch" debuted in 1969, so I consider that a 70's show as most of its years were in the 70's. "The Sopranos" debuted in 1999 and I say it's a 2000's show. This would also apply to "The Facts of Life" being 1979.
For shows that had a decent amount of eps. in both decades, I would say it should go by when its popularity took off and had the most viewers tuning in.
BigManMike 07-20-2020, 10:35 PM Facts of Life had only four shows aired in 1979. It is definitely not a 70s show. It should only be considered an 80s show.
TSMIV 07-20-2020, 10:42 PM Dallas is pure 80s.

But the tone of the "The Jeffersons" from 1980-1985 was in the 80s and felt like the 80s. I would consider "The Jeffersons" to be a 70s/80s show.

Only four shows? I agree. "The Facts of Life" definitely represents the 80s.
Fallon97 07-21-2020, 04:25 PM What about "The Love Boat?" It ran from 1977-1986.
And what about "Different Strokes?" It ran from 1978-1986.
visaman666 07-22-2020, 01:50 AM Beverly Hillbillies ran from 1962-1971 yet in the final season, it was very much a 70s show, as it was influenced by All In The Family.
king of comedy 07-22-2020, 07:54 AM How about The Simpsons? That one has ran for 3 decades. A 90s show. 1990- present It should have stayed in the 90s.

And it was a huge mistake doing that. I cringe when trying to watch that last season. Max Baer Jr (Jethro) must not of care to much for the new direction either, since you barely see him show up in the last few episodes.
I watch the Hillbillies to see Jethro dress up as a double knot spy, or Granny smoking crawdads and boxing with giant jack rabbits. They could of left the social issue crap for AITF

Agreed! They should of took a cue from Seinfeld and called it quits before the curtain fell on the decade.
AMackII 07-29-2020, 11:22 PM What do The Donna Reed Show, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke & The Original Twilight Zone have in common? These 4 shows are part of the 1960s era
Ironside & Adam 12 are basically 1970s shows because it both of them started in the late 1960s on NBC
Cheers, The Cosby Show & Falcon Crest are 100% 1980s shows
Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Three’s Company and Charlie’s Angels are a part of the 1970s

The FOL question is silly since it started in the summer of 79
TVFactFan 07-30-2020, 08:58 PM The Jeffersons started in late 74 early 75 so it definitely a 70s show

Didn't Perry Mason, Gunsmoke and Donna Reed came from the 50s? I know Gunsmoke ended it in 1975 and it was 20 years old.
favoriteshow 07-31-2020, 02:29 PM As for the Jeffersons, I watched a couple of the 80s episodes of The Jeffersons, where Marla Gibbs had longer straight hair. This episodes that I saw had a moral dilemmas/lessons that felt very 80's. I've also seen the earlier episodes where Marla's character has short hair and the show is more comedic, she is funnier and is snippy, and the feel is 70's. I guess that show covers both well.
Friends also ran from 1994-2004, spanning a number of episodes in two decades, the '90s and '00s. I suppose that I'd say it's more a '90s show but if it started and ended two years later with technically more episodes in the '00s, I'm not sure my answer would be different.
These two decades (90's and 00's) in terms of TV weren't as distinct in change, in my opinion than '70s and '80s, or even '80s and '90s. And between the '00s and '10s, it's likely even less distinct.
king of comedy 08-02-2020, 10:40 AM Threes' Company ran from 1977-1984 A 70s show but gradually change as it entered the 80s
James28 08-03-2020, 01:06 PM What about "The Love Boat?" It ran from 1977-1986.
I started this thread (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=344253) a few years ago about whether The Love Boat was a 1970s show or a 1980s show, and I was thinking because more years of The Love Boat's run, and highest-rated/ranked season (where it ranked at #5 during 1980-81, was in the 1980s than the 1970s, it should be thought of as an 80s show.
I fought with a few users who insist that Love Boat was a 70s show no matter what, and I just hate getting into fights on this forum.
At least the highest-rated/ranked seasons for Alice and Three's Company were during the 70s.
Steve Winslow 08-03-2020, 02:47 PM Well since The Jeffersons ran for an equal amount of time in both decades, I would consider it both, even though when people think of The Jeffersons they consider it a 70's show.
As for FOL, since it was only on for one year in the 70's and the rest in the 80's, I would consider that an 80's show.
Fallon97 08-03-2020, 04:46 PM The Jeffersons started in late 74 early 75 so it definitely a 70s show
But the showed aired 5 years in the 80s. It ran from 1975-1985.
TVFactFan 08-03-2020, 08:06 PM But the showed aired 5 years in the 80s. It ran from 1975-1985.
I guess you can say its both but it will be in the 70s section since that's when it made its debut
Fallon97 08-03-2020, 10:20 PM As for FOL, since it was only on for one year in the 70's and the rest in the 80's, I would consider that an 80's show.
Another poster stated that FOL only had 4 episodes in 1979.
