season 8 episode, he was not seen again until season 11th in the divorce episode.

Makes you think why the hell did he come back if he was going to leave again?

I don't think the actors realized that season 11 would be the last.

I never paid attention before but at the start of season 9, Berlinda Tolbert, Mike Evans and Paul Benedict was no longer in the opening credits

That's interesting. I never realized that either. Berlinda Tolbert was in an episode of "Amen" with Sherman Hemsley. She plays Thelma's old school classmate in town for a reunion and she is a big time snob & bitch in the episode! She's not too much like "Jenny" at all. I've seen Paul Benedict in an episode of Seinfeld. He plays the boss at the New Yorker magazine. I've also seen him in other stuff, but can't think of it right now. I don't think I've ever seen Mike Evans in anything but All in the Family and the Jeffersons.

Mike Evans wasn't in anything after the Jeffersons.

Isn't it bizarre how he just totally QUIT acting??

I remember on an episode of Inside Edition in the early to mid 2000s Sherman Hemsley said Mike Evans never wanted to be an actor! WTF?? Then why bother with All in the Family & The Jeffersons??

And why bother to come back to the Jeffersons in season 6 if he was going to leave again after season 8

Season 12 was supposed to have Lionel move back in with his parents which would've been kinda stupid.

Lionel was never as major a character when Mike returned in 1979 as he had been in the first session (when he was the third billed actor on the show). When he left again after season 7, Berlinda Tolbert remained as a recurring guest star and Lionel was always offscreen during her appearances. It seemed odd, and my guess is that the Divorce episodes were intended to allow Jenny to continue to appear without having to weave story after story around an off-camera Lionel, particularly since Jessica was getting older and becoming the center of some stories.

The divorce episode was the last appearance for both lionel and jenny
