View Full Version : Chris Mann - Come And Knock On My Door (Re-Issue)
goofsandobservations 07-09-2020, 11:05 AM I read somewhere recently (I wish I could find the article) that Chris Mann is working on an updated version to the book Come And Knock On My Door. It will be the same book but with updates since it was last published. Has anyone else heard anything? Release date?
thejasoomian 07-11-2020, 10:45 AM I haven't heard or seen anything about this reissue. It would be great if Mann would do a new version. Lot's of new stuff has come out about the show and what happened behind the scenes. And I would like to have a hardback edition of the book. What would be better is to have one of those over sized coffee table books 11" x 14" filled with color photos and such from the show. Like the book " The Art and Soul of Blade Runner 2049" by Tanya Lapointe. Somebody should ask him about the reissue on Facebook or Twitter.

If it does I hope it answers these questions
1. Why Norman Fell appeared in Night of the Ropers in 1981 if he was upset that he couldnt return to Three's Company in 1980?
2. Why Joyce Dewitt missed the season 3 episode "Stanley's Hotline"
I think #2 was answered but not 100% sure

That means Furley raised the rent.
Not surprising!

One thing that I especially liked about that episode was the brief appearance of the girl at the pub named Lola. I thought that she looked really classy in her denim dress. On top of that, I thought that the brown leather purse that went over her shoulder really dressed up her attire.
TVFactFan 08-25-2020, 09:51 PM Furley thought that coat would get him laid!
well the lady did tell him he was looking good in that coat:lol:
Mace Dolex 08-30-2020, 05:49 PM Pretty careless on Janet and Teri's part of giving the rent money to Jack, even if they misheard and thought Jack had money troubles how was that going to solve their problem with getting evicted?
goofsandobservations 09-17-2020, 09:04 PM I found the article it is from 2019 stating that next year (2020) there would be an updated version of the book.

“Stanley’s Hotline” is a strong episode, but it has one significant element missing: Janet Wood. In the real world, Joyce DeWitt was going through a contract dispute, and in Come and Knock On Our Door by Chris Mann Joyce tells the story of her absence. Long story short, the powers that were wanted to renege on a raise formerly promised to DeWitt. She called in sick the Tuesday before this episode’s taping, but ended up solving the problem herself by speaking with ABC’s entertainment president directly. It took another two days to get the deal in writing during which she stayed home, and though she was prepared to tape with the rest of the cast like normal on Friday, the producers rewrote the script with Anne Schedeen.
This info comes from Chris Mann book (https://books.google.com/books?id=iSfplRxL8gIC&lpg=PA170&dq=goliath%20%22come%20and%20knock%20on%20our%20door%22&pg=PA170#v=onepage&q&f=false)

I was hoping you had a answer for #1 lol
Mace Dolex 07-09-2023, 02:51 AM If and when an updated version of the book gets a release maybe it can include a chapter on the different edits between the syndicated and Nick at Nite versions.

The book came out in 1998 and it was the first time John and Joyce talked about the backstage stuff and it was a big deal at the time.
"E True Hollywood Story" had only done stories on actors up until that point and Three's Company was the first TV show they did an episode on with Chris Mann and all the actors and producers from the show.
There isn't as much interest in the story now. The publishers probably weren't interested in an updated version of the book. The story have been told countless amount of times on numerous TV shows and most books aren't selling as many copies as they were in 1998.
TVFactFan 07-15-2023, 12:19 PM Its still one thing the book has not answered
Why did Norman Fell and Audra Lindley agree to do a guest spot in 1981 after being told they could not come back to Three's Company in 1980

We will probably never know for sure since so many people from back then have passed away now.
My guess would be since Norman Fell and Audra Lindley loved the characters, they agreed to do it when offered big bucks. They were also ready to come back in 1986 when producers were trying to pitch another show with the Ropers that failed to get going.

Like CA said, can’t it be as simple as they were offered a bunch of money and took it?
Well, you’re the guy with access to all the old newspapers. If there’s a story out there about it, you’ll find it eventually.

Since it was so close to being told that they could not return I just feel it has to be something else. Just odd that would be mentioned in the THS that they was told they could not return after ropers was cancelled not discuss their gurst appearance a year later

Just stumbled across a 1981 article with Audra saying during a phone interview that it was nice to be back on the set and didnt know if her and Norman would be invited back lol So its looking like MONEY was the main reason
