Disney Announces Major Change to Splash Mountain
by Fran Pallotta, CNN Business News
June 25, 2020

Splash Mountain — one of Disney's most popular rides — will be "completely reimagined," the company announced on Thursday.

The log flume ride — which is based on the controversial 1946 film Song of the South — will be re-themed to star the characters from the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog, which features Disney's first Black princess.

Splash Mountain has been a mainstay at Disney parks since its creation in 1989. The new changes to the ride will be implemented at Disneyland park in California and Magic Kingdom park in Florida.

The move comes amid fans urging Disney to re-theme Splash Mountain because of the racial stereotypes from the film it is based upon.

Song of the South — which is best known for the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" — has long been criticized for its stereotypical and offensive portrayals of African Americans as well as a romanticized view of the antebellum South.

Disney says the new Splash Mountain concept is "inclusive" and "one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by."

"It speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year," Disney said on Thursday.

Disney added that the new ride — which the company has been working on since last year — will pick up the story of The Princess and the Frog after "the final kiss" and will join Princess Tiana and her trumpet-playing alligator Louis "on a musical adventure."

It will feature "some of the powerful music from the film as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance."

"Tiana is a modern, courageous, and empowered woman, who pursues her dreams and never loses sight of what's really important," Disney said on Thursday.

"It's a great story with a strong lead character, set against the backdrop of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou."

Disney did not give a date for the new Splash Mountain, but noted that "conceptual design work is well underway."

"Imagineers will soon be able to conduct preliminary reviews and develop a timeline for when the attraction transformation can begin," the company said.

I've ridden Splash Mountain twice when I have gone to Disneyland and while i'm not a giant rollercoaster fan it will be interesting to see what the new The Princess And The Frog ride will be. As The Princess And The Frog is my favorite Disney movie it is sure to be a hit ride when it opens. I also wonder if they will feature Anika Noni Rose performing Tiana's signature song Almost There in the ride as well?. As you know Tiana is one of Disney's underrated princesses and you can bet that with this ride Tiana will be the popular princess again

It's not a roller coaster, it's a flume ride.

I rode it once at WDW in Florida.

Anika Noni Rose says Splash Mountain's Princess and the Frog Revamp will Open in 2024
by Joey Nolfi
June 2, 2022

Anika Noni Rose says she'll continue the narrative of Princess Tiana when her Princess and the Frog rides open at Disney World and Disneyland.

The actress revealed for the first time an opening timeline for the long-gestating projects she's working on with Disney's creative team. She confirmed the group is deep into devising a re-theme of the classic Splash Mountain attractions, which the company previously announced would undergo extensive revamps to remove aesthetic elements lifted from 1946's Song of the South, a film that had long been accused of perpetuating racist stereotypes.

"They are making a ride — it'll be out in 2024," Rose said Thursday on "Live! with Kelly and Ryan". "I've been involved in the beginning, just talking about how we want it to be, what we want it to do, but, if I were to tell you anything else, I would be sucked into the ground and you'd never see me again."

According to a Disney spokesperson, "timing has not been determined" for opening the ride, though the company plans to share more details during the Essence Festival of Culture, which runs from June 30 through July 3 in New Orleans.

Disney Reveals Name and Opening for Splash Mountain's Princess and the Frog Revamp
by Joey Nolfi
July 1, 2022

Splash Mountain's old theming is getting flung into the briar patch.

Two years after announcing plans to refurbish the classic log flume to remove ties to the racist 1946 film Song of the South, Disney has revealed a name and expected opening for the updated attraction inspired by the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure is set to open in late 2024 at Disneyland and Disney World's Magic Kingdom, the company unveiled Friday at Essence Fest in New Orleans while joined on stage at the French Quarter's Preservation Hall by Stella Chase, the daughter of Chef Leah Chase, who inspired Princess Tiana's storyline in the movie.

Jenifer Lewis, who voiced Mama in the film, also performed at the event.

"In many ways, Tiana's Bayou Adventure is a love letter to New Orleans. Like the musical city that inspired this attraction, Tiana's second act is about a community working in harmony to achieve something extraordinary. She reminds us of an immutable truth we can all relate to: 'If you do your best each and every day, good things are sure to come your way.' And that's a melody we can all sing along to!" said Charita Carter, the executive producer of relevancy activations at Walt Disney Imagineering, in a statement.

Bored with Disney's wokeness. If the woke crowd had their way, there wouldn't be much to enjoy from Disney's classic movies and animation.

I'm sure they would have to "re-brand" any rides or attractions with Dumbo, because that movie has been criticized for stereotypes with the crows (or were they magpies, or am I thinking of Heckel & Jeckyl?).
